DarkLord14
I was at the Official FAQ and they said there goal is to allow people to play with a modem. Do you guys think this will wok out. I only have 56k and I am praying that this will still work. I really want this game now and pray it works. What do you all think?
exizzt
Probably not... I'd try to get dsl or cable if you can.
BlackDove
With or without a good connection, your performance should be really affected. The combat is partly turn based, so it should allow 56k-ers to run it good.
DarkLord14
Well i hope it allows it to run pretty good because I don't want to buy the game and figure out that it doesn't work well for me. That would suck!
setsuko
Well, 56k modem doesn't tell that much, what is important is how good your ISP is. With a good modem connection, you'll surely be able to play it. With a crappy one, not so sure. What matters is how much actual dowload/upload speed you can crank out of it, and how reliable it is. If it stops for a second or two now and then, it will hardly affect your everyday internet activities, but you will certainly notice it in the heat of a battle... Bottom point is: the ONLY minimum specs we have AT ALL on this game is that it will be able to play on 56k. And it will be, since it would cut out too much of the market for them not to work more on the code to make it playable.
CaruSante
it probably would work fine , untill the devs release a 150+ mb patch after launch ... that would really suck for you but hey they don't say anything 'bout such things so dont worry about it .... setsuko
Oh, how stupid of me to forget that! Well, now and then (more often right after the release) there'll be patches that you'll automatically download before you begin playing. With a slower connection, you might have to wait for a minute or two (or ten) to begin playing after each such patch. Well, I've never encountered 100+ meg patches myself (), but 10-15 mb is not unheard of, mind you...
CaruSante
believe me dude iv'e been there ... and it's NOT fun Anarchy online laucncher 2 days after launch of the game : Servers will go down for a memory leak patch , estimated downtime 48 houres patch size 189mb even for a vable user that would mean like 3-4 houre downloading , especially if there's only one patch server , but im sure the devs have looked at other MMORPG's to avoid mayor flaws like these ..... setsuko
Oooh, now it comes back to me, yes, the memory leaks of AO! Those were pretty spectacular! Didn't affect me that much, since I had 400+ mb RAM by then, but a lot of my friend got quite toasted. And the beta update patches were pretty huge, too, but that is to be expected. After all, I downloaded the entire game to begin with...
CaruSante
i don't think we have anything to fear here , these devs are veterans and not some newbie-lets-create-a-MMORPG company like Funcom , i fully trust these ppl if they say it will be playable on a 56k modem . something i DO advice for modem users is to buy the game 2-3 months AFTER release OKE OKE don't shoot me ppl !!! but after a few months fresh copies of MMORPG's are usually send to stores , UPDATED ... that means the massive patches of the begin months are included in the install . or you could have a friend download them for you an burn on CD . anyway i don't think it'll be such a pain in the ass as you might think
swphreak
I hope it does...... *hugs and kisses DSL modem* "My precious, my precious" If not, I think they should make a 56k server so 56kers dont slow us down, or make a broadband server..... I will never go back to 56k! "Neva!!!!!"
Wraith 8
well.... i never had a 56k modem.. i did have isdn modem.. that was pretty fast.. but now i have ADSL..... I LOVE IT! but i think 56k will give some lag... i think

setsuko
No, since ADSL is pretty much an international feature. ADSL is just one type of DSL. ADSL is a DSL line that is mostly for low use. It has download speeds many times faster than its upload speeds. This is usually for simple tasks such as downloading and viewing webpages. SDSL has upload speeds almost the same as its download speeds. This makes it optimal for gaming and servers of any type. Because the upload speed is high it is more expensive than ADSL. For most uses ADSL is the best choice. None of this matters, since I have 10 sweet megabits/second. Mmmmmm.... !

swphreak
you got a T1 line? 10mbps would be sweet. I get about 400 kbps MAX, but that's only when I use it directly with AOL or downloading from an AOL server since I got it from AOL. I usually average about 150 - 200 kbps downloading from nonAOL stuff. Plus, if the server I am downloading from is crap or has a lot of people using it, it is even slower....... My upload is nothing more than crap, but it is a lot faster than 56k, I can say that.
setsuko
Off course, considering the average connection on the net, I'm dowloading with 20-70 kb/s at most time. The disadvantage with a good connection is that so few others have it. Broadband to the people!
Slicevicious
10mbps?? a t1 is 1.5 lol.. i think your thinking of the speed from your computer to your router or something.. I have a 1.9 mbps and I dl at around 200kb/s alot.. please tell me if i'm wrong and u have a uber-cool quatro oc8 connection
setsuko
I sit on a LAN, within the Lund part of the swedish university network, sunet, which means that yes, I have 10mbit inside that area (a couple of hundred IP's large). The swedish university network is pretty sweet, the hardware they use can really get me drooling. I usually have only about 2mbit outside the university routers though, depending on the traffic, but then, who in here always d/l at 56 kb/s with their modems? As I said, the disadvantage with a very fast connection is that you are rarely able to get the maximum speed out of it, since the rest of the world is made out of ADSL and cable (or even worse, modem) users! But when you d/l movies at 700kb/s from some guy in Japan, you know it's worth it.
Xago7
I played early EQ off a 56K modem. But it only connected through Mindspring ISP at about an average of 28-29K. Plus Mindspring seemed to enjoy giving me the boot about every 45 minutes or so. At the time I found the gameplay acceptable; I had details set low, many effects off and the clipping plane up close. Of course, the higher levels of the game involve cooperative efforts of up to 50+ people and quick communications. The number of spell effects I could not turn off, planar zones with 60 man raids and the combined efforts of that many spell effects going off on a single mob that was nearly invisible due to a mass of melee fighters around it would drop me like a bad habit. I switched to cable modem. Of course the game evolved into alot more details, zones and usually required me to set up my details and graphics two ways: one for general play and a special no detailed graphics and sometimes even no sound for huge raids or just bad lag nights. SWG will be playable on 56K. Depending on your specific visual quality needs will determine your acceptable lag. But you also may have to limit the size of your groups (because unlike EQ you cant cast spells at mob while facing away from fight heh). Good Luck. swphreak
700 kbps, wow, that's awesome. It took me like 3 hours to d/l a movie from some guy @ 140 Kbps.....
setsuko
The main advantage you have is that most things are not done over the internet, but in your client, on your own computer. The netcode is mostly made up of all items positions, and messages from players and npc's. That's why you can play it on a modem, at all.
