Joshi Posted April 4, 2003 Posted April 4, 2003 I'm sure many of you have heard of teh Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl, which is basically a movie based on the disney world ride Pirates of the Caribbean from which ron gilbert got his monkey island idea from (although the movie has very little in relation with the game apart from some story points like the governors daughter and the walking skeletons and so on). now, i'm also sure that some of you may have seen the trailer for it (and for those of you who haven't, it's on this site, click it). well, another website has just come up with another trailer (i don't know if it's on the official site or not, but it was another website) which actually has mvoie footage unlike the first trailer. it's just been announced, so go an see it. here it is, click it it looks really cool, with great CGI effects and loadsa action, so see it now. Peace Neil
Kjølen Posted April 4, 2003 Posted April 4, 2003 Well I must say, that zombie pirate does look STARTLINGLY like LeChuck. However, LeChuck might have also come from the ride as he did. Though the actress for Elizabeth Swann looks familiar, were was she from?
Remi Posted April 4, 2003 Posted April 4, 2003 The only Turner in the movie is played by Orlando Bloom. If you're referring to the heroine, then she's the Natalie Portman look-alike in Ep 1 & 2, playing the decoy. She was also in Bend It Like Beckham.
Joshi Posted April 5, 2003 Author Posted April 5, 2003 i thought she looked a lot like natalie portman, but i knew it wasn't her because i knew her name was... um... well, i knew natalie portman wasn't in the film. nice looking i'd have to say, from a male POV. and yes, Jeoffry Rush does look a lot like Lechuck when he turns into a rotting skeleton, but the graphics are still really cool, and the storyline looks promising (if not slightly clichéd)
Joshi Posted April 5, 2003 Author Posted April 5, 2003 update, full trailer here with three different ways of veiwing them in three different methods (quicktime, real and media player) check it out, it's cool.
Kjølen Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 I guess there is no way for LucasArts to make a Monkey Island movie now without being sued by Disney or having the fans that don't know of Monkey Island think "Already been done *yawn*".
Darth Groovy Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 I think I MAY go see it, since I have had ample time to recover from the Geena Davis stinker; Cut Throat Island, that is assuming it does not turn out as bad as the latter.
Joshi Posted April 7, 2003 Author Posted April 7, 2003 produced by Jerry bruckheimer, directed by gore verbinsky, starring johnny depp and orlando bloom (however you think of him), can't be that bad. plus the trailer makes it look promising, you can hardly tell it's disney (and they did a great treasure island)
Darth Groovy Posted April 8, 2003 Posted April 8, 2003 Treasure Island is the epitome of Pirate stories or even movies in my own opinion.
Joshi Posted April 8, 2003 Author Posted April 8, 2003 i agree, and the 60's(?) version of Treasure island was done very well in my opinion. i liked that fact that the book (not the film because i want to give credit to Robert Lewis Stevenson), whilst being a pirate story still had human elements to it, like the friendship developed between Jim and Silver and the betrayle jim felt in the apple barrel and then the eventual turning of Silver as he found that he like jim. that was good.
Gabez Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Hmm, I'll go and see it whatever. If it does well, then maybe George Lucas will be "encouraged" to make a real Monkey Island film. ¬
DinghyDog Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 I actually quite like Muppet Treasure Island....hehehe.... -DD
EnchiladaMan Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 As far as I remember, I've enjoyed pirate stuff. I liked the old Disney Treasure Island film, and I still have a huge collection of pirate lego sets. So I *REALLY* hope Pirates of the Caribbean does substantially well, because it's been soooo long since we've had a good pirate movie. If the movie goes well, hopefully we'll see more pirates films made, either from disney or other companies. Maybe even Monkey Island.
