Atmospheric phenomenon?

Recommended Posts

I saw an odd thing yesterday aboard my land yacht, Tantive III. I had the mid-deck hat--I mean, skylight cranked open partway on a bright, sunny day. As I looked up, I noticed that the sun was blocked from view by the skylight cover...and there was a rainbow off to the side.

Now, the skylight is small, so I could only see part of the rainbow. Naturally, I wanted to see where it went, so I moved my head around to see more of it. It went in a perfect circle.

*!*

I've always heard that you could only see a circular rainbow from up in the air. I hear that airplane pilots see them quite frequently. Understand, I was only joking when I named my land yacht after a spaceship--it is a land vehicle. What the frack is going on here?

Perhaps Tantive III was being helf aloft by UFOs? ;)

I like that smily.

I've seen round rainbows like that as well, also from the ground. I think it has to do with a pocket of moisture being between you and the sun. It's rare, 'cause the angles probably have to line up perfectly.

Coolest thing I saw once was a thin wisp of cloud (very thin, but still thick enough to be visible), that must've been just at the right angle to catch the sun's rays. It was a rainbow, but not actually a "bow" (or even a ring), but a sharply-defined little "wisp," like some sort of airborne fractal. It was really cool. :D

Or it could just be a drug flashback. ;)

Of course, you can only call it a drug flashback if you aren't currently doing the drugs in question at the time of phenomina.

Now, if you will all excuse me, I have to deal with this 40 foot tall 7-headed bright pink and yellow panda sitting on my computer monitor who wishes to discuss the negative impact of SARS on the tourism trade and the subsequent repercussions on the world enonomy.

:joy:

*(Squeaks with joy and hugs Lujayne.)* Hello, Lu! How are you?

Yes, the rainbow went around the sun. What does that mean? Man, I should've checked the compass to see if it was holding steady... ;)

Edlib: No, I wasn't on any drugs...but I had been smoking some 'pipeweed' from Middle Earth that Gandalf kicked me an hour or so beforehand. It doesn't cause hallucinations. *(Slays a troll that was sneaking up behind him.)* :dozey: What? It's perfectly legal!

Ehehehe.... eheeheehee.... ^_^

I'm doing fine, and how are you, Imladdie? Other than very, very silly?

I'm guessing that you don't live in the Great White North, where this phenomenon you mentioned tends to happen quite regularly.

Was it also quite cold the day after you saw you this? O_o (*really hopes that it was, so that she doesn't sound like a fool!*)

What you saw, I am guessing, is what we all up here affectionately refer to as "sun dogs". Caused by ice crystals in the air, and generally a sign that the coming days are going to be stupidly cold. Though they usually appear as two *vertical* rainbows on either side of the sun, sometimes they do go all the way around, though I would take that more as a sign of Impending Doom than chilly weather. I can't explain why you'd see this in the spring, though, when the weather is supposed to be getting nicer...

Er, yeah.

So there you have it. Does any of this sould like it could be your rainbow? ^_^

Actually, I thought sun dogs appeared as white blobs on either side of the sun. I once heard them described as looking like a triple-sun, though personally I could see the suggestion of the curve (the "lens" effect).

But everyone knows you're my rainbow, Lujayne.

:D

Yes, it was quite chilly the next day. I'm quite sure that it was indeed one of these 'sun dogs' casting foul spells of illusion on my feeble nighttime rabbit eyes. I shall have to keep a sharp eye out for them (and by 'sharp' I mean big freaking knife.) ;)

UFOs? I'd say the culprit turned out to be a bit lower down the evolutionary tree.

Well :) I'm kind of sorry that I turned your excitingly paranormal and imaginative adventure into mere science... I'll try not to say anything next time. ;__;

Oh, FB, speak not of things of which you know nothing! Listen to yourself, man.... "once" "heard" "described as looking like"? O_O Now who are we gonna belive, this guy with his triple hearsay, or someone who has to see the bloody aweful things everyday for 8 months of the year? -___- Okay, it's probably only 6.....

That Rainbow is actually the bridge bifrost that leads to Asgard. First person to figure out how to walk on the quavering bridge gets a valkyrie and free mead.

Aurora Borealis are also the Valkyreis coming from Asgard on their flying horses.

I think that is much more interesting then sience...

Luj, You're right in that I've only seen sun dogs a few times, though I have seen them. I generally try to stay indoors during winters ('cause I'm in Ottawa, and Ottawa winters are about 50 degrees colder than winters outside of Ottawa 'cause of all the concrete and wind-tunnel-like architecture). Plus there's the whole "direct sunlight = Evil" issue.

I thought the Aurora was the excess unstable energon radiation burning off in the solar winds. All that's left of the once-massive energon deposits that were nuked (along with much of the planet) by the Vok during the Beast Wars.

The only Valkyries I'm interested in are the ones that can transform from jet to mecha. :shads2:

I wrote a short story called 'The Monkey Sutra,' which was all about the monkey tribe of sandalwood forest and their eternal quest for the magic banana tree. The bananas were rainbow striped, and gave monkeys a sense of inner peace when eaten.

Coincidence? ;) I think not. Perhaps these sun dogs are minions of Admiral's from Valhalla, looking for magic bananas in the troposphere...

Forgive my double-posting, but my last post was number 666, which suggests that the sun dogs are not from Valhalla, but rather serve a diabolical means. Demon beast, I see thee!

*(Cranks down his skylight and nails a wooden cross over it.)*

That oughta keep 'em out. ;)

Guildy: I burn sandalwood incense all the time aboard Tantive III (necessary if your land yacht has a dedicated crew of four kitties, believe me.) ;)

Kylilin: Have you heard of lemhash? It's eleven waysmoke--one small hit will make a grown man retarded enough to pee his pants. :D

Admiral: I'd always wondered what an eclipse was. I assume they were the infernal agents who turned the moon bloody the other day as well...

Almost 2 years ago I did a full study on "Science and Physics of a Rainbow" as a Project for school. It is very detailed and answers every questions that could be asked about rainbows. There`s a whole page dedicated to the circular rainbow. If you wish I can send you the file some day and it will explain everything. Unless you can`t read or understand French.

lol

I`ll see what I can do. I`m leaving on Monday for Spain then Morocco for two weeks. I`ll see if I can post it here before then. The thing is that I have the file in my computer back in Ottawa but the only thing I have here in Dakar, Sénégal is the printed out booklet version (I found it yesterday among my old notes...). So I`ll have to write it all down.

But I have a better plan:

Tonight, I`ll call my brother back in Ottawa via satellite linking (Very effective, except for thje part where I have to dial 29 numbers...) and ask him to access my computer and search for the file. He will then proceed in transfering the file to an F.T.P. while we chat on the phone. Then, if I return to the Canadian Embassy before I leave for Spain, I will proceed in posting a link to the file in this Thread. If time does not permit entrance to the Canadian Embassy before my trip I will post the link from an Internet Café in Las Palmas, Spain.

We shall call this mission: Opération Lapin Fou.

Zoom Lapin, l'accent circonflexe sur le "e" est très facile, c`est tout simplement "ALT+136".

regarde: mmmêêêêêêhh

Mais lorsque je fais alt et 136, il dit ô.

What the hell is that, anyway?

ô

If you ask me, it's either a Hershey's kiss with the wrapper pulled most of the way out, or the sanskrit symbol for cobra. In either case, it certainly isn't the French 'e+accent circonflex' I'm looking for... ;)

Note: this computer is a Dell, and that Dell commercial kid was busted for buying pot recently (my!) I suspect a connection. ôôôôôô...

Further note: The odd symbol that came up on my browser and the one that appeared on this BB aren't the same! When I posted, it turned into a box with a circonflexed 'o' next to it. You know what? I'm going to go get my sword RIGHT NOW and kill this beast before it develops further psychosis anomalies...
