Need some computer help

hi guys,

i'm having some weird things going on with my computer and hoped that you guys could help me. i just added 512mb of pc2100 ddr ram to my 256mb of the same.

now my computer is flipping out. my mp3's skip around, my graphics games run odd (TnL supported games like indiana jones and gta3 don't run and crash if they do). tons of errors pop up every which way. everything is just out of whack.

i've tried everything from reinstalling my video card to swapping ram slots....

does anyone have any clue as to how to fix this or what might be causing it? as you can imagine, it's very frustrating....please help if you can.

my specs:

windows 98se

athlon xp 2000+

768mb ram (1 chip of 256, the other 512 which was just installed)

geforce2 mx 100/200 32mb

50gb hard drives

are you sure the 256mb you had before is pc2100 ddr as well?

have you tried with just the 512 on its own?

also windows 98 can only take a certain amount of RAM, but i forget how much.

also check what the max amount of RAM your motherboard can take.

First: Pull the new RAM out to see if it goes away.

Then, pull the old RAM out and put the new RAM in it's place to see if that works.

If the problem follows the new RAM stick then you have defective memory.

If there's no problem with either RAM stick by itself, then the problem is, as the others suggested, Win98's max RAM allotment. Caused by a conflict with the graphic card's AGP port.

There is a work-around to this though, I believe.

great!! thanks guys! i just messed with the VCache "MaxFileCache" thing and set it to 526336 and it works fine now! however, since i have 768 ram, do you think it would be wise to raise that setting to 700 something to get more out of my ram? thanks a bunch guys!

No. You have to limit the available RAM that Windows 98 sees so that your graphics card has available resources to work properly.

Certain applications will be able to use the full amout of RAM, but you have to fool the OS into thinking it has less in order to work properly.

This is not an issue with Win NT, 2000, or XP. You may want to think about upgrading.

I made the move to XP Pro last January and I haven't had a single serious crash in all that time.
