Surfnshannon
if ya don't know i think we will all slap you upside the head. Unfortunately you can't have music for free. Unless a band let's you have it for free. And talk of pirating music is illegal and discouraged.

BCanr2d2
Guys, Let's not go down the "Are MP3's technically illegal, or technically legal?" path... Most of the bad press that MP3 gets is P2P software swapping of them. As far as I know, creating MP3's, ripping them from CD's etc and used for PRIVATE USE is completely legal in most countries. Contrary to the music industries attempts to stop users copying CDs, I believe in many cases it is stopping the user from practicing legal rights that they have... So the answer to the original question is that if you have the music on CD, it is in general OK to create an MP3, just as long as you don't distribute it, or use it in the public arena. There is also music out there that the copyright allows you to do whatever you like with it, or allows you to have it without paying any money for it. This is technically what is only meant to be swapped by any MP3 P2P program, so that they aren't breaking the law...
Darth Groovy
If your looking for free music, the LAST THING you want to do, is to post about it here. 4. The posting of links to sites that contain illegal material (ie where to get illegal MP3s, warez, etc.) is prohibited. Thread closed.
