Jedi Academy Demo...It just seems sort of "meh"

The JA Demo just seems sort of "meh" to me. It feels like it's lacking a level of polish that JK2 had. The voice acting is not as good as JK2. The saber combat seems to be more awkward -- I don't know if the range is shorter or the hit detection is different or what it is. I think they made the medium stance slower. Also, I'm not too fond of that little warping effect they added to Force Push/Pull.

I was going to pre-order this game, but now I feel like waiting for reviews. My excitement level totally dropped about 5 notches for this game after I played the demo.

What all do you guys think?

I thought it was great, if you have ever played the jedi outcast demo, compare them and you will see which is better, the jo demo lacked polish, the ja demo was full of excitement and really neat places like tatooine and chandrila:eek: , personally i thought it was more than i hoped for. Id say dont pass judgement until you play it multiplayer and play the full game. I liked everything and the saber burns on the enemys were great. Its already got a more star wars style feel than jo had, its hard to explain but it just feels more like star wars:D

Hm. I loved the demo. Still playing it (got it last night). For some reason I think it feels like there's more randomness in the battles due to a larger amount of moves and saber options (singe, dual, doublebladed). You really have to use everything you have in your arsenal of moves to defeat 2-3 reborn/cultist at a time.

TBH, when I downloaded the demo I though they'd lock me/us to human male, two faces, torsos, legs, single saber and a map cut from the full version. I really got a kick to the face when I could select all races and such. Even though I'm certain they will have more faces etc in the full version.

*possible spoiler if you're spoiler sensitive*

BTW, didn't you feel the AI jedi were cheating? I mean, kicking in all directions with single saber, medium attack kata with lightstaff and such?

Also, I'm not too fond of that little warping effect they added to Force Push/Pull.

Actually, the push/pull effect seen in the demo is identical to the one seen in JK2 SP. The "force bubble effect" we'd all been seeing in those screenshots and videos was nowhere to be found.

So if this is a criticism of JA, then it's also a criticism of JK2.

The saber combat is akward? Again, it's just like JK2, with a few new moves and two new "stances" (dual and double) added.

No offense or anything, but how long has it been since you played JK2?

As far as the AI cheating, well at least the guys on your side cheat as well as the enemies (check out Kyle's bada$$ moves!). ; )

As to polish, it's a demo after all. At first I was a little disappointed that the demo (I assume) doesn't have any brand new levels (like the JK2 demo had) that aren't in the full game.

But then as Andy pointed out to me when we were talking, chances are, people who play the full game when it comes out may never even play through those two levels. Perhaps they are some of the least memorable or easy, for all we know.

The demo's purpose was to "introduce" the game to you, giving a feel for some of the stuff in it and getting you interested in it.

The only thing that I think maybe they should have included was a vehicle or two, since that seems to be a big selling point.

But I think the SP is far improved. You finally get to use those powers that were missing from JK2's SP (especially Seeing and Absorb). The guns even feel more useful (though, for all we know, the Stormtroopers are as dodgy with the blaster fire as before) than in JK2 SP.

how far into the game does the demo go?

While the demo "only" includes two planets (one mission for each), it features a lot of SP stuff (some requiring cheats to see). You can use all the Force Powers and Weapons for example.

Of course it's unknown what details the full vesion might have that are left out of this demo. I'm hoping the Kel Dor and Rodian will have unique voice acting and we'll get more customization choices (as mentioned above) for example.

Rrrr... I hate when the AI cheats

But considering it does in all games I shouldn't be too angry. I shouldn't really CARE should I? No.

Anyway, the voice acting is quite good I guess, I've heard worse. Strange that the human male, Rodian and Kel Dor has the same voices though. The females I can live with since they all look quite "humanlike" and thus can sound pretty much the same. But as Kurgan pointed out, the Kel Dor and especially rodian (when did you hear them speak basic/english last time?) should have their own voice sets.

Now if you excuse me I'll go practice with dual sabers.

I think you mentioned somewhere else that you had some graphic settings turned of, like detail shaders. You'll probably see the force bubble effect when you turn some of the effects on. :)

The game does not have the "wow" effect that JK2 caused. It feels like a more polished version of JediMod, but that's about it. I can't say that it's a bad game, but it's definitely more of the same, and new features are purely graphical...

I just finished the demo (playing as a girl, naturally), and what struck me was that while she sounded American most of the time, there were a couple of moments when she sounded English. Struck me as a little odd, that.

I enjoyed the demo for the most part (it was good fun!) but what I didn't like was some of the graphics for the menus. Nowhere near as spiffy as Outcast's menus. *sigh* Hopefully they'll fix it up for the full version - the little previews of the planets in particular looked distinctly iffy. :(

Sorry, not true. The push/pull effects are different from those in JK2 SP. I would know, I got JK2 the day it came out in March 2002 and have played it almost daily since then. :)

In the JA demo there is quite visibly a Force-bubble effect that is quite awesome.

Maybe you couldn't see it, Kurgan, because you had to lower some of the details in the game?

holy crap! it's a quadruple post!!!!!!

anyway. I know some people have the warp effect and some don't and personally it confuses the hell out of me why I don't have it. I was at my friends yesterday and he had the warp-effect. And I have all the settings turned on except Dynamic Glow and he didn't have that either. I'm so confused!

She could've had alot of interaction with people who spoke either british english or american english so her own way of talking could've ended up being a hybrid of the two.

Anywho, personally I like her voice acting performance. Alot more than that of the male at least. (so I'll probably end up playing through the game with a female character, well, I went for a female first in the demo anywho XD)

The demo was okay. I wish that it had been levels not in the game but oh well. I like all the new moves such as the wall grab, long jump, and running up walls. The only thing that I probably didn't like was the force bubble when you did pull or push. I dunno, it just throws me off since it magnifies. How do I turn this off?

Where do you shop???? I had MP servers online and running in FEB 2002.....................

But hey...I happen to be....lets say ASSOCIATED with one of the Raven programers here so I happen to have been priveledged enough play and fool around with all the the retail version that is coming out next week has to offer...................... and lets just say that the DEMO and the retail version are two different worlds apart..............and as fo Multiplayer??????.....TWO THUMS UP!!!!

They took the game and made it turn out in such a way that saber fighting is now more enjoyable and challenging than ever.....those with skill will shine bright..........It takes the gameplay to a new level.:wstupid:

I didn't turn down any graphics settings and I didn't notice any "bubble" effects either. The push/pull effect looks exactly like Outcasts. I thought the saber combat was pretty much the same as well, except for the new stances and moves.

Anyway, most demos, in my experience, do lack some "polish." I expect that the full version will be better in that regard.
