Kain
If it was such a big deal, there'd be a media flocking and every government would be trying to prevent the demise of mankind. Duh.

StormHammer
Here is a link to the programme on Super Volcanoes (and Yellowstone) I was talking about... Horizon: Super Volcanoes You can read the transcript for the entire programme via a link on that page too. This little snippet can be found on the page I just linked to.. The last supervolcano to erupt was Toba 74,000 years ago in Sumatra. Ten thousand times bigger than Mt St Helens, it created a global catastrophe dramatically affecting life on Earth. Scientists know that another one is due - they just don't know when... or where. It is little known that lying underneath one of America's areas of outstanding natural beauty - Yellowstone Park - is one of the largest supervolcanoes in the world. Scientists have revealed that it has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago... so the next is overdue. So there you have it. They reckon it has been regularly erupting every 600,000 years. And it's overdue by about 40,000 years. By my reckoning, that means it's due to blow any time. And just an FYI for those who are under a misconception...it's not a regular kind of volcano. It doesn't have a regular lava cone, or anything like that. It is more like a giant blister filled with magma under the Earth's crust, and it shifts around as the pressure increases and eases. Apparently the lake at Yellowstone physically moves position every now and then because it's displaced by this movement. When it blows, basically the whole area of Yellowstone park will erupt skywards - and that's a large area. I wouldn't plan any holidays there any time soon - just in case. Arán
Originally posted by >Steed, John Is everyone aware that there is a super-volcano underneath Yosemite National Park in the United States, and that due to a recent increase in tremour activity scientists now believe that it has the potential to explode at any moment? Just thought, seeing as the resulting chain of events could wipe out all life on this planet, that you should know. Ta-ta for now. I only say one thing, doh! TiE23
Think of it, why in ****ing hell would the world just end all bull-**** We will all die from aliens, war, global warming, or diesease before our planet implodes instantly *picture removed* - leXX TiE
>Steed, John
Well gentlemen, all I know is that there has been an increase in tectonic activity in the region and that this usually superceedes a volcanic eruption of catastrophic scale. The explosion would destroy North America, and the resulting natural phenomena (including tidal waves and ash clouds) would engulf the rest of the surface of the planet. And yes, the eruption is roughly forty-thousand years overdue. Seize the moment indeed, fellow LucasForums users - you could be out of time very, very shortly. I'm off to make some lemon tea. Kain
I reiterate: If there was a true threat than every government in the world would be going bonkers over it. Duh.

I'm off to make some lemon tea. there is no tectonic activity in that area *wishes I could scan the world map of plate tetonics* if I remember correctly Yellowstone is a natural hot spot like Hawaii. Hawaii is nowhere near any plate boundaries at all, Yellowstone does not lie directly on any however, due to Benioff zone earthquakes from the pacific plate subducting under the north american plate...small earthquakes can possibly make the area unstable...but this is purely speculation from my mind. Also keep in mind earthquake and volcanic prediction...is only...at best estimates that are not entirely accurate at all. Kain, the Government knows a lot more than we can imagine...but they dont tell us...to keep the population from a state of panic. They simply arent going to tell us until its obvious...duh. edit: Tie you got owned buddy. PS: I will elaborate more on what natural hot spots, benioff zones and the plate boundaries when I get back from lab.
Kain
I never said they'd tell the public. I said they'd be going bonkers over it. I'm sure if the governments know about it they have a plan incase the the seismic activities gets really out of whack and they think this supervolcano is going to blow. If they were AT ALL worried that it would blow, they would move all of the warheads, nuclear and otherwise, a safe distance away so they wouldn't be jarred by anything that could set them off.
