lol.

i'd give you a link, but i know that that link also contains links to porno and hacked/cracked/etc programs, and that's against the rules (SEE? I READ THEM, JED lol) and it'd be rude to everyone to post a link to that kind of site.

This may seem like a noob question but I'm having some trouble. I'm trying to combine 2 pk.3 files (for my own use). I'm using Winzip 8.1 but I can't seem to remove the .zip extension. How can I change .zip to .pk3?

1. Right-click on the .zip file

2. Select Rename

3. Rename myfile.zip to myfile.pk3

4. Done

i think y'all are confusing this guy. Rather than telling him how to use other programs, he can do this in windows quite easily.

As Amidala indicates above you can rename the file, but if windows is automatically assigning filetypes you wont be successful in changing the filetype to what you want....

To rename a file to *.zip and have it stay .zip you need to do THIS FIRST(Otherwise, windows will by default assign it a known extension. so you'd end up *zip.pk3)

1. Open a folder, any folder

2. Go to Tools. Go to Folder Options

3. Click the "VIEW" tab. A little way down, there is a check box that says "Hide extensions for known file types" It is usually checked, uncheck it ! Press Apply

4. Now all your files will appear with their extension in the name. eg darthmaul.zip You are now free to rename it and hence change its extension type

ie. darthmaul.zip to darthmaul.pk3 (ie just delete the zip and type in pk3) !!!

EASY

Feel free to re-check the box once you are done, and having file extensions appear annoys you(as it does me!!)

Astrotoy7, I don't need to do any of that. I just make a .zip, rename it to .pk3, and I'm done.

I'm using Windoze 2000, maybe XP is different.

You can easily assign which program opens a .pk3 file by right-clicking a .pk3 file, selecting Open With->Choose Program... Scroll down the list and select WinZip Executable, then check the box that says "Always use this program to open these files", then click OK. Double-clicking a .pk3 file will launch WinZip.

There are usually 3 or 4 or 10 different ways to do the same thing in Windoze.

Granted. That's assigning the file association from the get go. I was assuming manoman hasn't/ doesn't know how to do this. In fact if he did, he probably wouldnt be posting the question...

But yes, I am specifically referring to XP. "Hiding extensions for known file types" is usually ON by default. It is on so as to prevent ppl from incorrectly renaming files that will no longer open, eg leaving the .doc out when you rename a Word document

So, as in your example. You could try rename :

darthmaul.zip

to

darthmaul.pk3

and what you'd actually end up with is

darthmaul.pk3.zip (ie. the zip is the hidden extension)

**and this wont work in JO/JA of course, as it wont recognise the .zip file

I think we've given him/her plenty of answers to fix his problem though, so GOOD WORK TO ALL ! :D

Myfile.zip

(right click, rename)

Myfile.pk3

Works for me!

Or you can extract the files, then put them into the directory structure you want, then right click on them and create new archive, preserve directory structure and woi la!

Then rename to pk3 extension.

http://www.winzip.com

If you're looking for "cracks" or "hacks" you're out of luck, against the rules and all....

But honestly all you need for pk3 editing is winzip. You can rename it to zip to open, or hold shift and right click on the file then "open with" and choose winzip.

Hmmm, sounds like Windoze XP is to Windows 2000 as Jedi Academy is to Jedi Outcast: prettier, but kinda dumbed down and less straightforward to make it more "newb friendly".

I purchased one copy of XP Pro and one copy of XP Home, but I haven't installed either one of them. I guess I'm waiting until until Micro$oft releases Service Pack 9 so I'll be sure most of the bugs and security flaws have been fixed.

Long live Win2000!

The rename thing doesn't work, atleast not for me. Use WinZip on this one.

First, take whatever file you want to put in a pk3, and drag it to an empty .zip file. It will ask you to ''transfer'' or whatever. In the window somewhere, you should see the filename, and it ends with .zip, of course. Remove the zip part, and add pk3 instead.

Then click transfer/add/whatever, and a new file will be created, and that file will be a pk3.

um...wow...Didn't realize this would cause such a fuss. Astrotoy7's way is the easiest. I did try to rename the file but what I ended up with was something like myfile.pk3.zip. So, I did what Astrotoy7 suggested and it works. Yes, I'm running XP and no, I'm not exactly a noob with it either (although this may look otherwise :D ) But, thanks to everyone who answered!
