How do people play the darkside of this game...?(spoilers)

i had to try it. just to see how it affected the plot of the game. and man it's rough. i could only play the game for 20 minutes at a time without feeling so guilty i had to shut it off. and when i decided to do this, i was going to do it all the way. from threatening the old man in taris being taken by bounty hunetrs for his credits, to threatening to turn zelka in the medical facility into the sith unless he coughs up some credits. and it's pretty d@mn funny at times. but it still just leaves you feeling bad. and in the end, killing your friends...?(of course with threatening people and talking to them like s#!t the entire game they should hardly be your friends....but i remembered them as friends from the lightside playthrough) how could anyone possibly gain any sense of satisfaction from this? lying to the jedi council was probably the most fun i had in the game. just due to the irony that you could be giving them such answers without them knowing the truth. "yes, master, anything to further the light" or "i didn't find anything"

but i hardly think the humor makes up for the extreme amount of discomfort caused by being a sick monster the entire game. :)

I've completed the game 4 times (shocking i know, but imo its damn brilliant game), and only once being darkside... i NEVER intend to play dark side again!

I felt so guilty playing dark side I had to stop every so often...

The real guilt trippers were:-

Persuading zaalbar to kill mission

Getting kicked off manaan, actually this just annoyed me!

Playing darkside is just the ultimate guilt trip :(

Dark side doesnt mean you have to be a giant asshole throughout the entire game. When I play dark side, I'm a true darksider. So it all starts with good intent, but eventually I become blinded by anger, greed, emotion, and lack of empathy for anything that doesn't understand me. An Anakin style of playing the game you could say.

The only time I felt bad during the DS playthrough was in the start of the game. I really didnt feel bad, but I had to consider a lot of the choices harder than during the LS. Its amazing how a game can affect you in such a way, and they have to get a lot of credit for it. I'm currently playing an über light guardian and after that I'm gonna go through as a DS Sentinel.

you guys should try playing the game as yourself. That means, choosing answers that would fit most with how you would respond to a similar situation yourself... gives you a good estatimation of how light/darkside you actually are ;)

I did that on my first playtrough, I ended up as neutral as you can get :D I allways accepted rewards, bet never asked for more. I did slaughter some ppl who where annoying me, but helped others who seemed hopeless... Hey that's just the way I am ;)

Personally this is the most natural way to go trough the game first. Why play someone you aren't? It's a role playing game I know but still... I save the ultra light and dark playtroughs for later :)

That is generally how I play, which means that I'm lawful good in Neverwinter Nights and BG2, etc. It also meant that my first two times through KotOR I had light side mastery very early on. My first time I got no dark points, the second time I just *had* to see how my level 5 soldier would fare against Bendak. Plus I found a couple of extra light side points on Taris, so I left Taris 1 point higher than first time.

In terms of playing myself, I also always play as a white male in his mid-late 30's ;) ...

So when I decided that my 3rd time through would be Dark Side rather than my Scout/Sentinel run (that'll be next), I needed to figure out a way to make it work. I chose to be a female. That way I wouldn't be worried about the Bastila romance ... one concern down.

So far I've done Taris, Tatooine, bits of Manaan, Kashyyk and Yavin (mainly to kick off side-quests) and am just about done with Korriban.

My regrets/concerns/difficulties:

- I was worried about Bastila's mother. Having spent time with my wife's dying father over Christmas break, and watching my own father age rapidly this past year ... I was concerned about any painful dialogue I might incite. I played it neutral and all went well.

- As a very involved parent of small children (5.5 and 7) the whole Carth plot with destroyed family, dead wife, father away from home too much and lost son was difficult to begin with (my personal fears and nightmares all involve injury/death/loss of my wonderful little family) ... going dark side really required me to make sure Dustil ended up dead and Carth broken ... again I played the middle ground as much as possible, with Carth ending up upset with me but blaming himself.

- The Sandal/Matale feud ... my inclination is towards saving them, and I worked hard to do that on my light side runs, but the dialogue was so funny it didn't feel bad to 'kill! Kill! Kill them all!'

- The whole premise for the 'mechanical love' quest is so warped that while I feel bad for the woman, it is easy enough to detach from it and send her chasing the droid I killed to certain death, with Bastila chastising me.

- I found it very satisfying turning so many Sith away from the dark side, so I didn't find it very much fun killing them all this time. But again, some of the dialogue was quite humurous ...

- The whole Geohardan quest tree intrigues me ... I've just started it, but it should be good. My first run I got halfway through the initial meeting before figuring out 'this is just wrong'. It makes me think of Michael Douglas in 'Falling Down' - "wait ... you mean *I'm* the bad guy!??!"

I find it a testament to the quality of this game and its' power over me that I am managing to play dark side so soon after owning it. JK took me six years, JKII I still play light side, and JA I've run through 4 times on light, and quit the one time I tried dark side.

Poor, doomed Trislyn Jast ... with her journey to the dark side I have found my avatar for any evil character. She will likely be resurrected as some evil character for NWN soon ...

Being on the dark side is great. It's the funniest part of the game.

If you have any other jedi in your party, they make the most hilarious comments when you use force persuade to steal something from anyone.

It's just great. Best SW game ever.

For me, playing dark side is very uncomfortable, as I have to stretch my natural tendency for goodness. But it is a worthwhile experience.

OK, since we're on topic of Manaan, I'm in the middle of it on my Dark Side trip through, and ...

want to make sure that none of my evil doings interfere with completing my Geohardan quests. So I'm wondering, if I poison the shark, what happens then? Will I be able to complete my other side-quests? Or should I just complete them first?

As for light side, you get arrested once, but don't speak rudely to anyone or allow your anger or dislike of the Sith to show, it'll land you in jail.

If you poison the shark, and somehow survive the tria, you're banned from Manaan.

I'm pretty evil when I'm dark side. No guilt or anything... and I do a lot of evil stuff, like stealing credits, choking the life out of annoying people, ect.
