I got the game the other day, loaded it up & it makes my system cry. :crybaby:

the weird part is I have everything they recommend & it still locks up (except my cpu comes in at 2 ghz instead of the recommended 3), I uninstalled last night & am going to give it another go, patching it up before playing this time & see how it does

Well, unless you count 5 shots on a sniper rifle, but thats not much use in close combat. There's no guns between me and any enemies - I almost made it running like hell.

Try and sneak up close to one of the closest mercenaries and use the machete. Then just pick up any ammo he drops and load a gun. Take them down one at a time - and dodge a lot. ;)

As for the checkpoint system, I can't say that I mind it that much. I'm finding it similar to the limited save option of SOF2, except it saves for you. One thing I often forget to do is save a game before I try something stupid, so this checkpoint system is actually helping me out, and it's not too distracting.

Just as a matter of interest, my system specs are:

Athlon 850Mhz

256Mb PC100 SDRAM

Geforce FX5900 with 256Mb DDR

WinXP with latest drivers.

I tried doing an auto-detect of settings, and played the game using that - but in the outdoor areas it can really chug. So I took all the settings down to their lowest to get a playable framerate in outdoor areas. I know that RAM is my major bottleneck here, followed by processor power.

I noticed I got better performance in the indoor areas, so decided to go completely mad and whack every setting up to 'Very High' at 1024x768 res. I'd been getting between 60-70 fps with auto-detected settings, but with everything on the highest setting the framerate only dropped to 30-40 and remained pretty steady regardless of the number of AI's running around. The game looks pretty amazing with everything turned up high, and it's very atmospheric.

I went outside again without altering the settings, and got about 15-18 fps - until the AI's started showing up, and then it turned into a 2fps slideshow. So I guess I'll have to keep swapping settings for the indoor and outdoor areas until I can upgrade to a better rig. With everything on low and 800x600 res it's playable in outdoor areas even with quite a few AI's running around.

At some stages it becomes obvious that the game is still a pretty linear experience - but there are some levels where you pretty much have free reign as to which route you take and how you tackle them. The AI is mostly very good (I've only come across a couple of AI's doing the 'running-on-spot' gig because they got hung up on the scenery). The best AI moment I've had so far is when I've blasted through what I thought were all the enemies in a room, and then I start forward to the door of the next room only to get shot in the back by the AI who had remained hidden and waiting in the corner to ambush me. Another time I'd thought I'd cleared a room - and then a Trigen entered and instead of heading for me - it headed for the nearest target which was a merc crouching behind a cage who was obviously waiting to ambush me.

So I have to say the AI is pretty impressive. They actively work to flank you as a team, run for reinforcements, set off alarms, wait in ambush, strafe gun for cover, and carry on their virtual lives from a distance. They also patrol the area rather than simply spawning in at static locations, so that's a definite plus. Sniping them from a virtual mile away and watching their reaction is great fun. Although convos are often repeated, you do get different convos as the game progresses, and it's cool to listen in with the sound-amplifying 'binoculars'.

The voice acting is mostly good, the sounds in general are good, the graphics are excellent, the story is not exactly ground-breaking but acceptable, and you can attempt some basic stealth by crawling through the grass and hacking people to death when you sneak up on them. The physics implementation is very good - and there are some nice opportunities to topple objects onto enemies.

I've yet to experience any bugs - although I did install the 1.1 patch straight away prior to playing. The only real issue for me is frame-rate, but I expected some problems due to my low system spec. Multiplayer is especially susceptible to poor frame-rates, and for some reason after while playing it starts to jitter for me, which I don't think is lag-related, as I usually get a ping of about 60-150 on the better servers.

Far Cry is definitely one of the better shooters I've played recently, and it's the kind of game I will enjoy replaying once completed. It's now among my top 10 favourites, so it must be doing something right.

You must have a giant fan inside ur PC, overclocked 9700 pro and over clocked PC....
