2 questions...

These should be pretty simple for anyone that has played the game for a while.

1) When do you get the chance to become a Jedi? I am about to fly off of taris.

2) What is the primary ability score for lightsaber use? The manual indicates strength, but I read some where that the best of strength or dexterity is used. Is that right for the PC version? If so, that could greatly alter the way I have been going at my character progression.

Thanks.

I can only guess he means which type of crystals you will use and/or if you are using a dbls.

does anyone know if your dex is higher than you str, your dex bonus is used for your lightsaber attack bonus?

Your attack bonus is seperate from strength and dextarity. The higher the attack rating you have - the better chance you have to hit the enemy with say a flurry attack. I'm not a d20 rules expert here, but if your attack rating is higher then your enemies defense, your attacks should be pretty successful.

Again, you can get lightsaber crystals which can increase your attack rating etc

i know the d20 system in and out. the way the attack bonus (what you called an attack rating) works is base (10 + level modifier) + ability modifier (normally str for melee or dex for ranged) + feat modifiers (such as negatives for using two weapons or pluses for being a master) + any weapon modifiers (such as what the crystals offer). this is all added to your attack roll (randomly generated # from 1-20 on PC or the result of rolling a 20 sided die in a tabletop game). if the attack roll is better than the targets defense (armor class), you hit and then your damage is calculated using another similar method.

so, what i am looking for is what ability modifier is used to calculate the attack bonus when using a lightsaber? the manual with the PC version says strength, but i've seen multiple references that in the Xbox version it is the higher of your strength or dexterity. does this also apply to the PC version?

i'm not trying to be snotty, so i apologize if it seems like it. but, since i am not getting the answer to my question i figure i needed to explain in more detail.

I believe that str is used to determine the attack bonus for swords, lightsabers and the biggest guns. Dex is used to determine the attack bonus for blasters and the like. In NWN, there is a feat called weapon finesse that allows you to use dex to determine attacks w/ mele (sp?) weapons. It might automatically include something like that in KOTOR, going w/ the higher stat.

Hope it helps.

i suppose i can test it out at some point. i wish the manual would have indicated if dex could be used though.

i could have built a PC that used blasters instead of focusing on the vibroblades. the vibroblades are never going to be used again once i get my lightsaber, but blasters could have come in handy.

If you want to test it, you could save your game then use cheats to set your strength really low and your dexterity really high. You might need to enable cheats, but I forget how. You access the cheats by pressing the `/~ key (above tab). There should be a > followed by a cursor ( _ ) on the top left of the screen. Then type in setstrength 8 Then, hit the`/~ key again and type setdexterity 22 You can see what other cheats there are by pressing [tab] while you have the cursor up on the screen. not all cheats are shown at once, so press [tab] a few times to scroll through them.

Use your saber while these cheats are on and you should be able to tell.

These cheats may work at other values, but I never tested below 8 or above 22. Let me know the results.

Sorry, I ment whether you use the single blade, double blade, or dual lightsabers. Each provides different pros and cons, so you may want to consider which attribute to max based on that.

Which ever is higher is used as a bonus for your attack bonus. In essense, you get the weapon finesse feat for free (I believe that is a feat in the pen and paper SW RPG).

well, i've got my lightsabres now. i wish i would have known that dex is used for your attack bonus. oh well. i am at +21/+21 with a long and short in the offhand. i suppose it is good that my strength is high to go into the damage bonus.

thanks for all the replies!
