Keep Babylon 5 Alive!

This is a plea to all Babylon 5 fans - we need your help...NOW! Read on...

Basically, the powers that be are trying to make a feature film, after recent record breaking sales of the DVDs - this is great, with the original creator and writer of the series at the helm.

But not even *he* has complete control. Rumours - from very reliable sources - are flying that the "suits" want to re-cast the film with "name" actors, and not use the original cast. Any B5 fan will realise this is a ridiculous thing to attempt to do, but Hollywood execs do not always think rationally.

If any of you have a spare moment, head over to KeepB5Alive.com to read up on all the details, and help out with the letter writing campaign! Time is running short, and we need as much help as possible.

This has the potential to be one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, we need only convince those in charge at Warner Bros. that they are making a wrong move by trying to re-cast the movie.

I thought that show died like...ages ago. I never watched it in the first place because of that one dudes wacky ass hair-do. I couldn't take it serious. So is this a plea to keep it in synication or has it been on all this time and I just haven't noticed, and can I actually read something in this thread to find that out for myself?

[edit]I read the first post, since it was by my Mike Patton homie Teh_Oneh, and saw what this is all about. Just for you, teh one, I'll click the linkeh.

they want to do WHAT?!

thats the stupidest idea ive ever heard - name actors indeed.

i have faith in JMS he's steered B5 through greater challenges, such as its near cancellation at the end of series 4. I think he will prevail on this.

it just wouldnt work having anyone else other than the actors and actresses who know their roles so well. and there are certainly no actors on this earth better for the roles of Londo and G'Kar than Peter Jurasik and Andreas Katsulas.

i do wonder though when the movie will be set in the B5 saga, i guess it would have to be in the twenty years between Sleeping In Light and the rest of season 5. We might get to see Drakh-controlled Centauri Prime which would be awesome, the books on it are really good.

Sigh. B5 was great, but it has fought a long battle against studio interference, and lost every time... it just gets worse and worse with every itteration (often through no fault of its own) and I wish they would just let it rest in peace.

The original B5 was a great idea. An overarching 5 series plot was really impressive... just as groundbreaking as 24.

Its use of CGI was groundbreaking (on amigas!!! :D yay!) and after scoffing at it for a series or two star-trek followed suit (as well as copying most of their other ideas).

The actual plot(s) were pretty good, but the best thing about it was it was the first sci-fi series that felt "realistic" and grown up. The episode with all the soldiers who went off and died in a pointless war was more "saving private ryan" than startrek. Everyone had complex motivations and wasn't goody or baddy like star trek as well.

Unfortunately the budget wasn't great, the networks messed it around, paramount threatened to pull star trek from networks that showed it and it was basically screwed.

It all went wrong when they decided to cancel it one series early, meaning that after all that buildup they had to rush the ending and leave things unfinished.

Then they decided to do the last series after all, meaning they had to make up stuff on the fly and fill time.

The stand alone TV movies were almost all rubbish. Though the first one was interesting.

And the "rangers" series was awful.

Making Cinema versions of tv series is hard enough anyway, you have to explain it to new viewers, while not repeating stuff for old viewers. You would have to update the designs, costumes etc as they have dated over the last 10 years.

They should just let it rest.

If they want to make tv series into films then I would have thought firefly, farscape, buffy or birds of prey would have been better bets. But even those wuld be tricky.

He should just write something TOTALLY different.

/rant :D
