Tim Burton Films

OK, so I saw all the Kevin Smith ones I wanted to see. To please my little sister, who's getting into the Burton films, I'm renting pretty much all of the ones we have for us to watch together. I've seen most of them already, but since I'm so close to having seen all of his films, I figure I might as well watch them with her. Which are your fav Tim Burton movies and which are your least?

 

1. Batman/ Batman Returns (Batman Begins put them to shame, but they're still my fav Burton films )

2. Pee Wee's Big Adventure (and no, I'm not joking; the film is a masterpiece)

3. Sleepy Hollow

4. Beetlejuice

5. Mars Attacks

6. Edward Scissorhands

7. Nightmare Before Christmas

8. Planet of the Apes (I suppose if you don't like the original or have never seen that, this movie isn't as bad as I make it out to be but I love the original and its sequels and therefore think this is a pile of crap)

 

An interesting thing. We watched all the Burton films we own (Batman movies, Pee Wee, Beetlejuice, and PotA), and she didn't like Batman Anyone who's not a diehard Batman fan not like it either?

I've always appreciated his vision and original style, but i'm not sure the final films always come out that good.

 

Planet of the Apes was an ok average action film with excellent production design... until the nonsensical ending which ruined the whole thing.

 

Come to think of it, now i look at a list of his films he isn't quite as impressive as i thought... or have we missed some?

i don't see what the fuss about NBC is all about. its not that great. viusally, its cool, and musically, even though i'm not into that, its pretty good. but so overboard. i'm so sick of jack skeleton merch. ugh.

Bah, all you people with Pee Wee near the end of your list suck. Not as much I suppose as the ones who didn't bother mentioning it

Well, it's not like he composed it or anything, but I have to agree with you most of Danny Elfman's scores are brilliant. I rewatched Big Fish for the first time. I forgot to add that on my list. I'd put it before or after Mars Attacks. I dunno for sure. I like parts of it, but the story of an old guy dying and his son getting to truly know him for the first time is just.... boring. All the parts with Ewan were good though.

 

And as for Planet of the Apes, I'll defend it somewhat by the great makeup, great music, somewhat creative plot twist (the first one where he learns where the Apes came from, not the whole monkeys ruling Earth thing which was just a poor attempt to copy the book's ending ), Tim Roth's potrayal as the evil leader chimp (erm, Chimps don't rule, Orangatans do; the class system is what made the original so great) and Michael Clark Duncan just kicked ass as a Gorilla

I just bought James and the Giant Peach, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet, so can't place it on the list...

I saw it in third grade after reading the book. Don't recall much from it. Artistically I'm sure it's good (if you're into Burton's style of art, which obviously you are) but the actual story, as I remember it, just sucks.

James and the Giant Peach is an excellent film. As always I like the animation style, and the cast of insects rocks. I seem to remember thinking the only weak point was some poor musical numbers, but its such a long time since i saw it that i might be imagining that.

 

Its probably worth pointing out that James and the Giant Peach and Nightmare Before Xmas weren't actually directed by Tim Burton but by Henry Selick... burton was just a producer (and co writer on NBC). I think it was Selick's visual style as much as burton, as he is an animated movie director and burton isn't. He's currently working on Coraline, an adaption of a Neil Gaiman short story... but i haven't seen it confirmed that its animated. I assume it will be though.

 

I'm seriously looking forward to Corpse Bride, but again Burton is only co-director (and Mike Johnsson is the animation guy) and wasn't even a writer this time. You could argue he knicked Selick's style

 

According to imdb "Burton's Animated Film Evokes Cheers at Venice Film Fest" so thats a good sign.

TBH, I've only seen Nightmare before christmas, and my mom made me watch planet of the apes. I think I've seen the batman movie, but I can't remember.
