On with the post... Detective Noir, an independent short film. As the title suggests, its in a film noir kind of style, and it centres around a pair of detectives trying to solve a case and bring a dangerous lunatic to justice. Detective Noir Trailer [10MB] (Right Click + Save As) The film is over 30 minutes long, so we're going to release it over the net in three segments, each release probably about a week apart. Part 1 will arrive soon after this trailer, so I hope it grabs your interest. Any feedback would be very welcome. The two heroes of the piece, Dodd, a veteran crimefighter with a past, and DeClancy, a strange newcomer with no real ability to think, confront a dangerous criminal with a tendency towards robbing banks and burrying the loot, just like those pirates in the comic books... lassev
Heh heh. I see Kengo still excels in his old bravura: Advertising his (or other people's) products in every imaginable place... I can say this here, because I think it qualifies considering how long he was away from here.
acdcfanbill
oi! looks good! how are you planning on distributing it? many onlines shows have good luck with Bittorrent.
Kengo
Hey guys, thanks for taking an interest in the trailer, plus remembering that I ever used to post around here! I have to admit a certain feeling of guilt whenever I try to promote or advertise anything Lasse, I worry about a future as a souless marketing executive, getting paid a fortune to sell people things they don't want and... hang on... who needs a conscience when you've got a sports car anyway? lukeskywalker1, good to see you still around! I still have fond memories of your excellent cutscene work back in the day, do you still do SP level work? (please excuse me for being so out of touch with what people are doing now) Bittorrent eh acdcfanbill? It does seem to have a kind of snowball effect with some online stuff, sounds like a great idea to me. We'll go with mov format for sure, maybe DivX or something else as well, and hopefully print a buncha DVDs as well. I can just see myself standing in the street, behind a really bad stand, trying to force people to take DVDs!
Prime
Kengo! I will definitely check out the trailer. Welcome back my friend!
acdcfanbill
just throwing it out there, some dont like it, ex RedvsBlue, they tried it and never had that good of results, but for others it works well.
Kengo
Hey Prime, great to still see you around these parts my man! Love to hear what you think of this result of our watching too many black and white films on lazy summer afternoons. acdcfanbill, I kinda like the idea of anything that does a lot of the distribution work itself, and shares out the bandwidth for good measure! lukeskywalker1
lukeskywalker1, good to see you still around! I still have fond memories of your excellent cutscene work back in the day, do you still do SP level work? (please excuse me for being so out of touch with what people are doing now) No, sadly I don't. I was working on a big project, but like so many others I've moved onto something I consider better- Blender. http://www.blender.org Its a free 3d modelling program. Its capable of making 3d models, 3d video games (yeah, really! and its not crappy with a lot of work!) it can even edit pictures and movies. Its capable of photorealistic renders, it can animate, lip synch, work with sound, and so much more. I've edited lightsabers into my own hands using plugins, and rendered movies (its capable of PIXAR Quality stuff) Crap, its totally professional and 100% Free.... Kengo
Sorry to hear that you're not SP mapping anymore LS1, but it looks like you've found a great piece of kit to persue some really ambitious ideas! I kinda moved on myself from animated stuff using the JA engine to the Half Life 2 engine. With some of the new software/game engines out there, the sky really is the limit for animated films. Still, its good to know that there is still a place for live action, right?
Prime
I liked the Trailer, Kengo. Looking forward to the finished product.

lukeskywalker1
Thats right! I was going to switch to HL 2, but... well, just never picked up the game. Better graphics, plus a better community. (one of the reasons I left was because of the small/crappy community) :-(
Kengo
Personally I think HL2 is one of the very best games ever made, well worth a purchase at some stage, if you are happy to put up with the fairly annoying Steam-based install process! I must confess, the far larger community of HL2 was a draw from an editing point of view - it got a little disheartening towards the end of Team Corellia when it seemed a real uphill battle to get as many downloads as the last episode had each time. Having said that, I have very fond memories of the JA and JO editing community especially, except that guy from Finland...
lassev
Having said that, I have very fond memories of the JA and JO editing community especially, except that guy from Finland... Aye aye... I can already see the title of your next movie: "A letter bomb to Mr. Cardboard tube"...
lukeskywalker1
Exactly. Its not worth spending months at a time, modding, scripting, etc only for maybe 500-1000 DLs at the most, when you can edit another game and easily get maybe 3000-4000 DLs. Kengo
Exactly. Its not worth spending months at a time, modding, scripting, etc only for maybe 500-1000 DLs at the most, when you can edit another game and easily get maybe 3000-4000 DLs. Yeah, I guess thats the logic I took in the end. In the early days of JO editing, you could release anything and it tended to get a bunch of downloads, particularly if it was SP related. My first level was pretty terrible in almost every way, but it still got a tonne of downloads because things were so active back then. I was never one of those editors mainly in it 'for the art', I was in it for the plaudits, the praise, the fast cars and women! Aye aye... I can already see the title of your next movie: "A letter bomb to Mr. Cardboard tube"... Hey, you're from Finland too! What a coincidence... I of course meant that other guy from your nation, you know the one, always threatening me with deadly attacks and making better levels than me. Now, what was his name? Kengo
Hey guys, its taken a long time indeed, but I am happy to let you know that part 1 of the film is now out! I've edited the first post of this thread to try to keep it up to date. In Part 1, I guarantee several of the best moments from the trailer, not to mention all kinds of other stuff too good to even go into the trailer! Expect twists, turns, and 17 minutes of pure, unadulterated noir. Check our website for more details. I've also got the download links for the first part below. Quicktime (Right Click, Save As) Low Res (62.5 MB) High Res (96 MB) We'll be releasing the film in three segments, due to its running time, expect part 2 this time next week. Part 1 is currently avaliable in mov format, with WMV to be added later this week. There are two file sizes, high res (96 MB) and low res (62.5 MB). The running time of section 1 is around 17 minutes. Part 1 sees Detective Dodd, a veteran crimefighter, setting up his new HQ. He is clearly a man with a past, some problems, and a plan. He sets out to find a partner, which leads him to a strange Detective College dropout named DeClancy. Worse is to follow, as a man that Dodd once put in jail has escaped, and is already putting his latest crime spree into action. It appears that the fledgeling detective agencies' first case is about to begin...
lukeskywalker1
CRAP! HUGE FILES! WMV files are usually a little smaller. I guess I'll wait for that...
Kengo
We kinda struggled to get the file size any lower, with a 17 minute runtime. I did create a 30-something MB version, but it was of such low quality that we decided against using it. In retrospect, we shoulda split the film into three more equal segments, instead of about half of it being in the first, for some reason! On the plus side, the download speeds from the 8 bucks server tends to be good.
Prime
I will definitely have to clear off some HD space for this.
