Lady Jedi
Clicksies It's long but very good. Some of you may have seen the thing that Dateline has done recently to come down on internet predators. To be specific those who are looking for sexual relations with minors. Apparently there's this Perverted Justice company that has decoys pose as teens in chat rooms to find net predators, and they've been very successful in catching these guys. It's been a three part thing so far.In the first part the perverted justice people set up meetings with people obviously up to no good. They gave them instructions to a nice house and said to come on in. Inside the house they had Dateline correspondent Chris Hansen waiting with hidden cameras. Once the guys had explained themselves they were free to go, but with the info that they were being watched. Part two was basically just a recap of part one. Part three is where it got really good. This time the house was set up in California with basically the same deal; Chris Hansen, hidden cams, the whole shebang, only they had a mobile home with county police inside listening to the whole thing. As soon as the pervs left the house they were arrested and taken into custody. 50 of the 51 that showed up over three days were charged with assorted felonies and misdemeanors. Awesome. Sorry for the long post, but I think it's great that something is being done about this.
IG-64
I watched part one awhile back. Do you know when part three will be coming on again?
Lady Jedi
No I missed part three. I just read the overview in the msn link.
Samuel Dravis
As soon as the pervs left the house they were arrested and taken into custody. 50 of the 51 that showed up over three days were charged with assorted felonies and misdemeanors. Awesome. ...I think it's great that something is being done about this. Yes, that's a great thing and they should continue. It says 1 in 5 kids are solicited through the internets? Jeebus. Looking at the logs they posted makes me think four things: *The kids are stupid (if that's how 'real' kids act I was never one of them). *Their parents are stupid (some of them. Another article on there details their ignorance > universe). *The perps are stupid (seriously, they are). Now, if just one of those groups got their act together, we'd have something real being done about it. 295,734,134 / 5 = 59,146,827 potential victims 59,146,827 - 87,900 (actual child sex abuse cases in 2000) = 59,058,927 So there's still 59,058,927 potential victims left to go. I'm sure those guys will try, but they've still got 59,058,927 / 51 = 1,158,018 more kids to go through each before they're finished. I'm sure there's a lot more where those guys came from too. I think relying on the cops or Dateline to get them is not a good idea. Easy enough to avoid the situation entirely - don't use yahoo chatrooms! Yes, I know nothing about manipulating statistics, so you should take those with a grain of salt. Zappa_0
A lot of sick people, some people who saw the last 2 shows of it even went to meet the people they talked to online. Very messed up people...thats all I have to say.
BongoBob
Me, my mom, and my friend all watched most of part 3, and I've got to say, they need to do these regularly. I'm gonna go to the perverted justice thing, becasue I think they said that you could volunteer there. EDIT: I read their page for people who've been caught, and it cracked me up. http://www.perverted-justice.com/?pg=busted At the same time I'm also happy they encourage getting help, but they make it clear that it's not their job to get you help. TiE23
I was watching it yesterday when I was taking a break from re-attaching the 32 gallon gas tank back to my car with only woodblocks and one jack (took about 4 hours total). I just watched for 10 minutes, it was funny how some of them were 60 and totally overweight and stuff. Actually, that makes it creepier. But I did physically laugh when I went outside on how stupid they were.
TK-8252
One thing I have to wonder is why law enforcement isn't already doing this on a massive scale? Considering how successful this has been, why is it that this kind of operation is only being conducted by a volunteer group? Law enforcement agencies need to be conducting these kinds of sting operations on a regular basis nationwide.
El Sitherino
Take into consideration the amount of funding that is required to do this. These are dedicated organizations. Police forces deal in all areas of criminal offense. They can barely afford to keep themselves funded.
TK-8252
That's true. Unfortunantly the government is spending all their money spying on ... never mind. If they had the funds it would be worth it though.
Lady Jedi
Samuel Dravis *The kids are stupid (if that's how 'real' kids act I was never one of them). *Their parents are stupid (some of them. Another article on there details their ignorance > universe). *The perps are stupid (seriously, they are). The kids are stupid (some of them at least). They simply aren't considering what creeps are out there; they feel like they are sitting in their own home, and therefore they are safe. Parents really need to be more aware of what their kids are doing. Each family should have at least a guideline about what is allowed on the net. And this can't be stressed enough: Know what your children are doing on the internet. The creeps are not only stupid, they are disgusting, and creepy, and gross, and just plain wrong. Ugh. Tk-8252 One thing I have to wonder is why law enforcement isn't already doing this on a massive scale? Law enforcement agencies need to be conducting these kinds of sting operations on a regular basis nationwide. I agree. More should be being done about this. Even if Dravis' stats aren't totally correct, I know the numbers are ridiculously high. Hopefully with this aspect of the web being so bluntly displayed on national tv, folks with the power to really do something will start actually doing what they can. EDIT: As for the funding, if awareness is raised on the subject, I have a feeling that folks would be happy to donate for a cause such as this. Children's childhoods are being violated, and I know that's not something that will be ignored by a lot of people. Hell, people copy everything else that celebritys do; if one of them would all of a sudden decide to notice this aspect of life, I know people would follow. Law enforcement agencies need to be conducting these kinds of sting operations on a regular basis nationwide.I think some of the problem implementing this on a larger scale is because what they're doing is a rather close (albeit legal) relative of entrapment. They're walking a fine line doing this, and without careful oversight they'd probably break the law themselves... I know the guys are scum, but the police have to follow the rules for the law to mean anything.

Ah, but Perverted Justice says that the way they avoid entrapment is by never making the first move in the chat room. They wait for a predator to make contact with them before engaging in conversation.
Samuel Dravis
More people = less oversight = greater chance of entrapment happening = bad mens go free. It can be done, but they'd sure as heck better do it carefully.
toms
As long as those doing the stings are careful to stick to the rules... Though with all these undercover fake kids, and undercover advertisers, pretty soon its going to get to the stage where no-one in the chat rooms/forums will be genuine at all.
