Tysyacha
Gamespot has GOT to be kidding. 40? There's no way I could get mine that high. What's Darth Traya's defense rating anyway? 100? I know the boss monsters have to be tough, but they shred me like cardboard!!! Any tips?
dede_frost
I think you built your whole character wrong (sorry, you can make it however you want, but this is what I consider the weakest way). Did you invest on inteligence and charisma? that's not, IMO the best atribute to invest. I think that you should put more into strenght and dexterity (however you spell that). I actually got my deffense up to 56 using a Sentinel+Watchman, with the dex of a about 30 or something (I was usoing some of thise Jedi armours). But yeah, you seriously should think about putting some more strenght and constitution in your guy to kill the bosses.
Maverick5770
Don't worry, about their defense ratings, Atris' was closer to 30 I thought and Traya was even easier, just use lots of energu resisting shields.

I know the boss monsters have to be tough, but they shred me like cardboard!!! Any tips? Double-barreled questions much? This is the 2nd or 3rd one today isn't it? So with your Jedi defense powers (Jedi Sense, etc), DEX and WIS modifiers added to your defense, plus all those incredibly overpowered items that boost those modifiers and Force powers like Master Valor and Master Speed, and robes or armor, you still don't think you're getting close to 40. At level 28-29, your PC is probably cruising in the low-mid 20's just standing there in a robe. Maybe easier bosses are in order, but then they wouldn't be bosses and the game wouldn't be a challenge. As for tips, try this thread

I know the boss monsters have to be tough, but they shred me like cardboard!!! Any tips? It is not necessarily 40. Almost no opponents in TSL have a fixed defense rating. It varies (along with many of their other stats) depending on the level of your main character when you encounter them. The higher level your main character is, the tougher enemies get. As for getting good defense, get the feat the Handmaiden can teach you that lets you add your wisdom modifier to defense. It can add up to quite a lot if you are a heavy force user with good wisdom. Clone L68362
Something strange I noticed when I was on Malachor was how Jedi robes affected my defesne rating. Say it was 36 without any clothing on, if I put on something like Zal Shey armor with a +5 bonus, it would only go up to 38 or so, but if I put on Jedi robes with +3 it would go above 40. Is there some bonus I overlooked that Jedi robes give? This was a long time ago so I don't remember what I had or exactly what the numbers were, I just remember robes giving me higher defense bonuses than they should. Achilles
Armor tends to have max dexterity restrictons. I think the ZS armors are capped at 5, therefore if you have a DEX modifier of 10, only 5 of those points to your defense. In contrast, in robes you'll get all 10. If the armor class is 5 or above, the armor is equal or greater protection than the robe. If not, then the robe is better protection than the armor. Remember, armor is bulky and cumbersome. Robes are designed to allow freedom of movement.

Could it be because you had a high dexterity bonus that got nullified by robes/armor with a maximum dexterity bonus?

The wisdom modifier is only added when you are not wearing any armor(strangely the "jedi" armors, such as Zal Shey, prohibit this also.)
Prime
I think my character (currently around lvl 22) has a defense of 42 or so. It is very possible.
Ztalker
^ | | | Yes, mine has too. People mostly forget about Force Enlightment too, of you are LS. It activates Speed, Valor, and other buffs. If you are high lv and trained a bit, you will have them on high, so you get a sick buff realy fast.

You mean how armor will say something like: Zal Shey Neophyte Robes: Defense Bonus: 5 Max Dexterity Bonus: +5 So, if I had a Dex rating of 22, it would be a +6 modifier, but the ZS armor would restrict it to +5. I thought the modifiers only had to do with ranged weapons, like higher strength modifiers add higher chance to hit when using melee weapons, higher dexterity modifiers add to your attack bonus when using ranged weapons. I didn't think it had any effect on defense.
Achilles
It does. It's in the little book that came with the game (and various other resources as well)
Jackel
My last character (female quardian / weapon master) wearing Verpine Zal Alloy Mesh with a strength of about 40 (several nice stregth increase items) a dex or like 14 had a defence rating of over 40. (X-Box version so no cheating or modding)
Clone L68362
It's so confusing. It says on the Armor section in the KOTOR booklet (stuff in parenthesis is stuff I'm confused on): Heavier armor encumbers by restricting dexterity modifiers. For example, a character with Dex 18 receives a +4 Defense bonus (so that's a base defense of 14). A heavy battle suit provides Defense 9, (14 + 9 = 23) but restricts the maximum allowed Dex bonus to +1. (So with only a +1 bonus you have 11, add in the defense from the armor and you get 20) for a total Defense rating of 10. The numbers don't add up! *Head explodes*

For example, a character with Dex 18 receives a +4 Defense bonus You get +1 modifier for every attribute point above 10. So in this case you get +4 DEF for having an 18 DEX (18-10=8, 8/2=4). (so that's a base defense of 14).
Depends. If the armor is a base DEF of 9 with a 0 max dex modifier, then yes. A heavy battle suit provides Defense 9, (14 + 9 = 23)
Not quite. I'm not sure, but it looks as though you're counting the 9 twice (once as part of the 14 and then again as a bonus). but restricts the maximum allowed Dex bonus to +1. (So with only a +1 bonus you have 11, add in the defense from the armor and you get 20) for a total Defense rating of 10. The numbers don't add up! *Head explodes* I'm with you on that part Let's try this - For your overall defense (DEF), you need your PC's base armor class (AC), plus your armor (restricted by max dex bonus), and any modifiers (generally your DEX, but if you have Battle Precongition, WIS too). Ok, so I have a level 20 Jedi Consular, and just to keep it simple, let's say he has 20 DEX and 20 WIS. A level 20 Consular has a base AC of 8. That means if he had 10 DEX and 10 WIS and was standing there naked as baby, his DEF would only be 8. Because his DEX and WIS aren't 10 (they're 20), he's going to get some AC bonuses via the attribute modifiers. The game assigns you +1 modifier for every 2 points you have in an attribute over 10. So with 20 DEX, I get +5 to my AC (10-10=10, 10/2=5). Same thing with WIS. With the two bonuses, my AC jumps from 8 to 18. If I want to improve my AC, my only option (besides Force powers) is to add armor. I'm a Jedi, so I want me some Jedi robes. I add Jedi Master robes (+3 AC/ 0 max dex modifier) and my AC jumps to 21. Luckily, robes aren't that cumbersome (my PC can still move pretty freely) so there's no penalty to my DEX modifier. But suppose I wanted something heftier than robe, like heavy armor. I add some heavy armor with a base AC of 9 and max dex modifier of +1. Now my AC had gone up again. It wants to go up to 30, but with that modifier restriction, I lose some of the bonus that I had previously. My DEX modifier drops from 5 to 1 (because one is the max I can have with that armor) my DEF drops 4 (because I lost 4 AC from the DEX restriction), so I get 26 DEF with the heavy armor. Even though the base AC is 9, I only gained 5 because 4 AC were lost in the trade off. Had I equipped medium armor with +5 base AC and +5 DEX modifier, I also would have ended up with 26 (because I got +5 from the armor and the max dex modifier didn't penalize my bonus). Make sense now? This is why characters will sometimes lose DEF when you put on heavier armors - the max dex restriction kills their bonuses! Hopefully this helps explain why using the Valor Force powers will boost your DEF even though the description makes no reference to increasing your DEF. I hope that helps. narfblat
Their guide is only dealing with the added defense you get from armor and dexterity modifier. with dexterity 18: defense with clothing = otherdefense + 4(from dexterity bonus) + 0(no armor, no robe) defense with jedi knight robe = otherdefense + 4(from dexterity bonus) + 2(robe defense) defense with heavy battle suit = otherdefense +1(from dexterity bonus restricted to 1) +9(armor defense) [The line where you put: A heavy battle suit provides Defense 9, (14 + 9 = 23) the actual figure, with basedefense of 10, would be 11(dexterity bonus is restricted to 1)+9, which equals 20] note that the dexterity bonus is also added to your chance to hit someone when you use a ranged weapon. In KotorII, you can use finesse feats to allow you to use dexterity bonus instead of strength bonus* for lightsabers or melee weapons(lightsaber finesse and melee finesse are seperate feats). *unless strength bonus is higher. It picks whichever bonus is higher when you have finesse
