The Seeker
I have an Asus DVD-ROM drive that has worked perfectly for the last year. Recently though, it has quit reading DVDs or DVD-ROMs. It still reads/plays CDs and CD-ROMs, but nada on DVDs. So, my question is does this sound like something fixable, or should I just shell out $30 for a new drive?
BongoBob
With dvd drives costing so little, I don't think it's that bad to spring for a new one. However, if you want to try it, you can try opening it up and cleaning the lens. Worked on my friends xbox for a while.
manoman81
Try a cd player cleaner before opening it up. It's a cd with a brush on it. Otherwise, just buy new one.
ET Warrior
If it still reads CD's, but not DVD's, it sounds like it's potentially a driver problem. First thigns first I'd download and install the most up-to-date drivers. If that doesn't work, then I'm useless.
The Seeker
yeah, thats what I thought. Didn't know if there was some onboard settings that I might have been missing. Thanks guys.
Samuel Dravis
I'd say: get the new drivers like ET said, and check if the region setting is correct. Have you been using any disc emulation software? Sometimes that causes trouble with copy protected things. Starforce is especially evil, d'you play SC: Chaos Theory? That might be the problem if you do. Fortunately, I run dual drives for my burner, and my slave drive launched it no prob. So, what would I need to do then, you're so smart
MrWally
I've had a similar problem with my DvD drive, for a long time it worked fine, and was able to burn cds (not dvds), until a few months ago. It most likely is a driver probably, but I'm to lazy to see whether it will actually fix the problem, since we have a shared cd burner on my old computer. Samuel Dravis
LOL, you must be lucky. The only reason I said CT is because Ubisoft announced they're ditching Starforce copy protection a few days ago - apparently it causes trouble with optical drives.... I've never had trouble with my copy of CT, but then that may just be because I don't have a burner on the compy I have it installed on.
