Party Members

Good one Shem. I'll have to go with Atton on that one. Carth may be the better pilot, but Atton's like a cockroach, he’ll survive whatever thrown at him. It also helps that he’d have a lightsaber. I did not take either, but if I knew they’d be at each others throats the entire game I'd replace two crew members with them.
Thanks. I revised it. Hopefully this one is funnier.

Ideally, i'd like for some of the players to return as NPC's and only the droids to return as PCs.

Kotor 1:

Revan- along with the exile, Revan rebuilds the jedi order and now is the head of the jedi council.

Bastila- sits on the jedi council beside Revan. Was able to put her personal feelings aside, realizing the jedi needed her as well asthe galaxy.

Juhani- seeing that no mention was ever made of her in kotor 2, we can presume she is dead. Maybe just for closure give her a heroric death (she tried to face Darth Sion or one of the other sith lords and was killed).

Jolee Bindo- Same as Juhani, but instead of being killed, he just became one with the force, again just for closure the could show Revan looking to Bindo for advice atsome point in the game.

Carth Onasi- Well, last time we saw Carth he was an Admiral, maybe to give him a mor important role, he could've turned his military career into a career in politics. Possibly a senator from Telos.

Zalabarr & Mission- Before Revan heads off into the the unknown regions he tells Zalabarr, to finish his life debt by making Kashyyk prosperous. Zalabarr is the chieftan of Kashyyk, and due to the influence from Revan, Kashyyk is warming up to outsiders. Mission remains with Zalabarr as an advisor.

Kotor 2:

Exile- When Revan returns from the unkown regions, the exile finds him. Together they rebuild the jedi order and once they are done the exile asks Revan to remove the force from him, so he can return to exile.

Kreia- Dies at the end of TSL

Brianna/Handmadien- As Kreia says, she leaves battle behind and takes up Atris's role as chronologer of the jedi order.

Mical/Disciple- During the exile's and Revan's quest to rebuild the Jedi Order, they find Mical, whom the exile encountered on Dantooine. After seeing the good they accomplished, Mical asked the exile if he could finish his journey to become a jedi. And as Kriea says, he becomes a prominent member of the jedi council sitting on the council besides Revan, oppositeof Bastilla.

Mira- Mira should also be a Jedi Master, maybe not on the council, I think a few generic NPC's should be created to fill out the council not just characters from previous games. Just to keep Kriea's predictions true, I think at some point Kriea should sacrfice herself in order to save the main character.

Visas Marr- Visas joins the other characters as members of the new Jedi Order.

Bao Durr- Give the man a robotic arm! Just for some variety, he doesn't have to be a jedi, but have him be the tech specialist at the jedi temple.

Atton Rand- After it's all said and done, Atton goes off to do his own thing, since Kriea says that the force looks out for the fools, he should pop up and possibly be an important character.

Canderous- Rebuilds the Mandalorians as a major threat again.

GO-TO- Was destroyed at Malachor V, but his programing survives, so while you never run into GO-TO, the exchange is still alive and well.

Playable characters:

T3-M4- What would kotor be without T3-M4? Originally he should be Bao Durr's aide, but when you get your mission he should come with you.

HK-47 Leaves his master Revan, because he is no longer the meatbag he remembers, but eventually finds his way into your party.

Designer Ramblings: New Cast

There are reasons why we didn’t use the original cast from Knights of the Old Republic 1 as companions in the sequel. It isn’t because Bastila suddenly got her own TV series and decided that computer games were beneath her, or those pictures of Carth at the leather club that surfaced earlier this year, or anything like that, although their agents and lawyers might tell you differently.

One reason was the sequence of events that occurred in Kotor 1. There’s many different ways the game could end up, and not all of them would allow for the companions to travel together again happily ever after.

The second reason is that in some cases, we felt the stories for these companions had come full circle in the first game. Each of them had their problems and challenges during the Jedi Civil War, which we felt had had a chance to be addressed in the game and resolved (especially Juhani, Carth, Bastila, Zaalbar, etc.).

The third reason is keeping the “voice.” Not only is it risky to take someone else’s character and try to do them justice (which can be a painful experience for developer and player), but once you’ve read a batch of Star Wars novels, there’s nothing more painful than trying to watch others get Han Solo and Luke Skywalker “right,” which is difficult, because all you’re doing is faking the character - you didn’t create them, you’re only mimicking their voice and personality, and while sometimes this works, oftentimes it just ends up creating something less than the original.

The fourth reason was stagnation. Knights of the Old Republic is a brand-new Star Wars license, and as such, has a chance for a fresh start. Rather than keep the same characters for 4, 5, or 6 games (if it ever gets that far), we have a chance to keep shaking up the universe with every game and keep the universe from becoming stagnant – again, after reading a ton of Star Wars novels, using the same 5-6 characters again and again hamstrung by the same series events starts becoming confining, and you can feel it in some of the stories and novels. I think that’s part of the reason they started introducing a new cast in the later novels, some of which fans have really enjoyed.

The last reason was more of a personal decision. For me, creating companion characters is one of the highlights of developing a role-playing game, and who you travel with over the course of the game and who acts as a sounding board for your character’s thoughts and feelings can end up being a large chunk of the role-playing experience. Furthermore, there are certain aspects to the Star Wars universe that were more appropriate for certain character types to advocate or denounce (which Kreia and Atton do considerably, as do others), and it felt better to do them with new characters than to use the old ones. There’s certain things I’ve always wanted to say about the Star Wars universe that would be difficult for the K1 cast to voice and still remain in character.

That said, we did try to include characters from K1 for continuity, although we tried to take many of the underdogs from K1 and inject more into them – this should come across more notably with T3 (you’ll encounter him before the others).

Anyway, had to say it.

Off to Gen Con!

End Designer Ramblings: New Cast

That was posted by Chris Avellone (the lead designer of KotOR II) on the Obsidian forums. If that post isn't enough to suggest that most (if not all) of Revan and the Exile's companions will not be party members again in KotOR III, then I don't know what is. In fact, don't get your hopes up people, because if KotOR III is made and the storyline is what I'd like to call a 'wrapper upper', we probably won't even see the likes of Mission and Jolee again.

There are various reasons why characters like Mira and Juhani will not be party members in KotOR III again, surely I don't have to explain why right? Look, the only characters from KotOR and KotOR II that I want in my party in a KotOR III game would be HK-47 and T3-M4.

If it is assumed/forced that regardless of the gender/alignment of Revan that Bastila lives, then perhaps she too could be one of your party members in KotOR III, who is either a Jedi Master or a Sith Lord (depending on Revan's alignment) who trains your new main character in the ways of the Jedi/Sith through out the game. Perhaps she'll join your party 'for plot reasons' about half way through the game or something along those lines.

I suppose I wouldn't mind if Bao-Dur becomes a party member again in KotOR III (assuming he lives that is) but I would certainly understand why he wouldn't be a party member in KotOR III.

But as far as the rest of them goes, put it this way, they'll be staying away from the KotOR III party...

The only other character you can add to the list of possible NPC's is Mandalore.

So that makes:

1) HK-47

2) T3-M4

3) Bastila

4) Bao Dur

5) Mandalore

But I think we should cut it down to 2 or 3. No more. It makes it more original. Cameo appearances? Okay then

How about old companions as temporary companions? I mean, you could meet, say, Jolee on a planet and even have him join the group if you have mutual interests. But he's dedicated to his quest on the planet, not main character's quest for whatever, so if you leave the planet, then Jolee leaves the group and stays behind.

Ten NPCs from KotOR and tSL ? Mmm...

Admitting Revan as a MLS and the Exile as a FLS, I would take :

Bastila She wouldn't arrive at the beginning of the game, maybe she would arrive later, for an hypotetic Final Battle against the True Siths, at the head of a Jedi battalion...

Already upgraded to a Protector Jedi, with Master Flurry and Master Battle Meditation (it would be the end of the game, so she must be strong...).

Carth Like Bastila, he would join the party later, arriving at the head of a Republic fleet. Maybe he wouldn't join the party at all, just appearing giving orders to the fleet...

Canderous Coming as Mandalore, with a new Mandalorian army... He would be in the party if Carth wouldn't, and vice versa.

Jolee He would appear on the road of the Exile, while they would look for Revan. He would be the old and wise Jedi that Kreia won't be... And maybe he knows something about the True Siths' Empire.

HK-47 and T3-M4 They were here at the beginning, the will be here at the ending. HK would discover (thanks to a hidden program which would be activate by a "revelation" (like his memory recovered with the revelation of Revan in KotOR) where his Master is and would follow him.

T3 already knows where Revan is, and he would unlock the Astronavigation Map.

Atton Because he will pilot the Ebon Hawk XD ... And because the romances in tSL aren't concluded yet. Maybe he would fall to the Dark Side to kill Mical ? The Siths would infiltrate the group thanks to him...

Bao-Dur He has to be with his General. He wouldn't let her alone. And he is a great engineer, and a strong warrior too.

Mical They would need his knowledge and his powers in medicine to resist against the Siths. And he has a role to play with Atton.

Or maybe he would appear with Bastila's Jedis, but he wouldn't be playable. In this case...

Visas Because she is now against the Sith and she would fight with the Exile. She is one the last Miraluka and her Force Sight power would be useful.

Zaalbar and Mission Big Z. has a Life Debt with Revan. He will fight with him. And where Big Z. goes, Mission follows (mmm maybe it's the opposite, isn't it ? XD )...

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

jumping right in here, i guess my list would be as follows:

Bastila (great Jedi to have in your party while you're at low levels)

Carth (experienced fighter, also good for low-level characters)

Mandalore (cuz Canderous is just plain awesome)

HK-47 (wouldn't be KOTOR without him)

T3-M4 (same as above reason)

Mira (Jedi)

Brianna (Jedi)

Zalbar (life debt)

Mission (goes where ever Zalbar goes)
