Carwyn rested his chin on top of the staff he'd procured for himself next to the bench. Maggie didn't seem like she'd be any sort of martial artist, but looks could definitely be deceiving. As she settled into her stance, he noted the ease with which she performed the action, indicating that he'd definitely had a fair bit of practice. Whether or not it would be good enough to beat Kyo, Carwyn didn't know, but he was certainly going to enjoy finding out.

"So, who do you think will win?" Aya asked Toa on the bench next to him.

"Maggie without a doubt. Kyo may be good, but I've seen even the best underestimate the actual best. I know that from personal defeat. It's not pretty."

Carwyn raised an eyebrow and looked at Toa askance. "'Personal defeat'?" he asked. "You've fought Maggie before?"

"Not bad."

"Thanks," Maggie responded, hoping she'd made a good first impression. Tucking the end of her staff into the crook of her arm, she twisted her wrist forward and used the torque from the motion to snap a quick attack down at Kyo's head, fully expecting him to parry it. She gritted her teeth and set her feet in preparation for her next move.

A whisper of wind drifted through the area and Takara settled herself down to the ground gently next to Aya. "Sorry to eavesdrop, but when the wind is a carrier of words, I cannot help but hear," she said apologetically. With a little grin, she added, "And a sparring match is always good entertainment."

"Surely you can move faster than that."

"I'll try, m'lord," she said coyly, then used the momentum of his parry to bend backwards and twist her body in a horizontal arc, sweeping her staff through Kyo's legs.

"Whoa!"

Well, that didn't take long. The unexpected sweep caught the swordsman in the back of the knees, knocking his feet out from under him. Due to the trajectory and momentum of the sweep, he didn't have enough time to flip himself before hitting the ground, so he settled with summer-saulting backwards and hopping to his feet after hitting the ground.

"That's more like it." he said, resetting his fighting stance. Perhaps things would start to get interesting now. "And what happened to 'Kyo'?"

"You've fought Maggie before?"

"No, I've never met the girl in my life. What I meant by that was that I've been defeated pretty badly by woman before." Toa replied to Carwyn's question. His eyes drifted back to the fight and he chuckled as Maggie caught Kyo off-guard.

"What happened to 'Maggie'?" she responded in kind, setting her feet and bringing her staff in front of her, pointing one end towards him at a slant. She beckoned him foward with it. "C'mon," she said with a coy smile on her face as she was beginning to really enjoy herself.

Aya smiled at Takara. "Indeed," she agreed, and then added, "Except when the bystanders get soaked." Then she gave Takara a wink. "Although," she whispered to Takara, "truth be told I really didn't mind that much." She winked. "It was sort of fun drying off."

Takara blinked. "I'm sorry, but I haven't the pleasure of understanding your meaning," she said slowly. "You..." Then, she realized and blushed. "Oh! Sorry..." With an embarrassed grin, she added, "I tend to get a little carried away when it comes to a competition... and loose track of my surroundings."

"So it is eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth with you." he said, grinning. Spinning his staff around, he took up a position much like Maggie's, although in reverse. With his right arm wrapped around the shaft, he angled it back behind him, bent his knees, and stood on the balls of his feet, his weight shifted forward. His left arm held out, he clentched and unclentched his fingers. "Let's get this show on the road, shall we?"

With little more warning than that he shot forward, his staff coming round for a horizontal sweep. When Maggie promptly jumped back and out of the way, he took another step forward and - in the same motion - grabbed the other end of the staff with his free hand, and used both the strength of his arms and his momentum to bring a hard blow aiming at Maggie's head.

((And so the charry-control begins :xp: ))

Maggie whipped her staff up to block Kyo's strike, but underestimated the force behind is blow and was sent reeling. She lost her balance for a few moments, then her reflexes kicked in and allowed her body to use the momentum of the impact to spin away from Kyo and come to a stop low to the ground, one knee touching the soft grass carpet. Bringing her staff quickly up to bear in anticipation of another attack, she quickly stood to meet Kyo's next strike.

"Ah, I caught you flat-footed." Kyo said, smirking. He had stopped his assault the moment he saw her lose balance and had paused where he was, his staff held lengthwise across his chest again. "Always stay on the balls of your feet, ready to move or block or shift to retain balance. Never underestimate the force of a blow; make your blocks as strong as you can every time you throw one."

As she stood again, he began on the offensive a second time. Dropping the staff under his left arm this time, he ran at her. Grabbing the end of the weapon with his right hand, he flipped it up, as if vying to drive the butt of the staff into her diaphram.

"Not a problem," Aya said, her eyes riveted on the combat. "Sometimes that happens to all of...." She bolted upright. "Hey! Foul! Low blow!" she shouted at Kyo as he looked like he was about to strike Maggie's middle. She suddenly cleared her throat and sat down, slightly embarrassed at her outburst. "Erm, sorry. Caught up in the moment...."

Maggie saw Kyo's staff come up towards her midsection. Thinking quickly, she jammed her staff into the ground in front of her, then used it as leverage as she launched herself into a flip over Kyo's head. As she passed above him, she shot her arms out to grab his shoulder blades and use her forward tumbling motion to lift Kyo up and fling him ahead of her. She finished her flip and landed on the grass in a crouch, one hand on the ground for balance, breathing a bit more laboriously now.

"Hey! Foul! Low blow!"

As Aya's voice rang out, Kyo paused in his attack to simply look at her, seeming almost entirely bewildered by her objection. However, that bewildered state didn't last long.

Maggie, lithe and quick as always, flipped over his head, grabbed him by the shoulders, and used her momentum to lift him bodily and quite literally throw him backwards. He hit the ground hard, rolling once or twice before his momentum wore out.

Rolling onto his stomach, he shook his head and blinked a few times. "Well, that was...unexpected." he muttered.

Carwyn grinned as he heard Aya's exclamation. "Easy there, Aya," he said. "I think Maggie knows what she's doing." The moment he said this, Maggie had flipped up and over Kyo's head and had somehow managed to hurl him forward, using the momentum from her jump. "See?" he said, tapping Aya lightly on the shoulder. "Your friend's got some nice moves."

Maggie had quickly scooted backwards and retrieved her staff and now held it in a ready position in front of her as she carefully approached Kyo. "Are you all right, Kyo?" she asked, her voice belying a hint of concern. Her flip-throw had rocketed him a bit further than she had expected it to and he seemed a bit slow in getting up. "Would you like to break for a bit?"

As if in reply, Kyo's fingers tightened around his staff and he rose to his feet in such a fashion that he was already driving up at Maggie, now that she was only a few feet away and within range. When he had come to a fully standing position, his staff - which he now gripped in both hands - had been locked against hers, which she held likewise. The two locked together for a moment, he smiled at her.

"Just a bit surprised is all, Maggie." he said, "It'll take more than a little throw to keep me down."

Aya raised an eyebrow. "So, I see," she replied to Carwyn. "Looks like Mag's got Kyo exactly where she wants him."

"Oh, I don't know if she's got him exactly where she wants him," Carwyn told her, a hint of mischief in his voice. "If I'm reading the situation right between them, I can think of a few places that she might want him," he said with a conspiratorial wink.

"Carwyn!" Aya hissed quietly, and she started to blush. "That's my best friend you're talking about, and... and... we're in a monastery, and... and besides that, they only just met!" she continued in a hushed tone. "Even if it is love at first fight.. I mean, sight! Love at first sight!" She sighed. "Now, you got me all flustery again...."

Maggie returned Kyo's grin, glad that he wasn't out of the scrap yet. His fighting style was nothing like Brother Carlisle's, which she supposed made sense, since Kyo was much younger and had far more raw power at his command than the elderly monk did. She knew this just by feeling the amount of force he put behind his blows. As far as she could tell, he wasn't holding back at all, and this pleased her, because she wasn't holding back either. She didn't want to injure him, but her competitive spirit also drove her not to lose to him.

Twisting her staff to the right, she spun away from the lock, then settled into a high overhand stance meant to maximize offense.
