"What Makes You Tick?" - an adventure game

Hi there,

Once I had the "Essential Guide to Monkey Island" on Mojo ... well those were times! Anyway ...

I made a freeware adventure game for all you Lucasarts Fans out there, which was published a couple of weeks ago. Maybe you like it ... I wanted to make something that brings back some classic adventure atmosphere.

You can find the game here: http://wmyt.deaddog.de

or here: http://lassie.gmacwill.com/lower.php?section=games&page=titles&game=wmyt

I'd be glad if some of you guys and girls like it.

BTW the game engine (http://www.lassieadventurestudio.com ) was written by guy who once did "The End of the Line" - the / a Grim Fandango website on Mojo - Mr. Greg MacWilliam. True Story :)

Greetings, Matt

PS: There are even fan-walkthroughs out there :) ... but you can also use the official hint page which is here: http://wmyt.deaddog.de/?page_id=19

The game looks really good... I updated the news about it.

I was looking at the MI guide on the way back machine, recently. If you still have the files, and wouldn't mind uploading them back up, we'd love to have you back! (And the same goes to any other old Mojo site owner)

Any chance of making it full-screen?

Sorry, no. But if you reduce resolution to 1024 then you should have a good playable size. I decided on the screen size early and later realized that it might have been better to make everything 800x600 so you get a fullscreen effect on that resolution. But *sigh* now I have to live with it. Things you learn when you make your first game.

BTW: I just found all the "Guide to Monkey Island" Stuff ... some little changes, ftp data and then the Nostalgia can begin :)

Just PM me, Gabez. BTW gotta download Dr Who - the Master is back! :)

Hmm, double post time.

Well lets see, I really don't have many bad things to say about this game, it's a welcome return to the old point 'n' click games. The interface is pretty easy to get to grips with, mainly because it's so familiar (the "verb disc" having been used in many point 'n' click games before and it works nicely here, hell, if it ain't broke, don't fix it right?) and simple. Obviously done in a similar style to the Curse of Money Island, but even still, it's clear from the start that it has it's own unique style as well, both in the art, and atmosphere.

The puzzles are fun and in the same way challenging enough to keep me entertained whilst not being too hard that they frustrate me. They fit together quit well and while the game is rather linear (although it being a rather short game, that's to be expected), it helps to not overwhelm the player.

The protagonist is well animated, not perfect, but considering you're not getting funding from some big game company or something, it's better than could have been expected. Nathan is also rather likable as a character although not too engaging as a person. I suppose you could compare our introduction to him as being similar to the introduction of Guybrush Threepwood in the first Monkey Island game, we don't know too much about him or what his drive is in the game, but for some reason we want to stick with him.

The rest of the characters weren't as engaging, but fine nonetheless. I didn't really find myself warming in any way to Nora, but did enjoy talking to the Sailor.

I find it nice that a number of items in the game can be interacted with even if they prove to have no purpose, it's a good level of detail to get into as it makes the game all the more richer.

The main fall down for the game though, is the dialogue. Mainly it's the fact that a number of the lines of dialogue could have been written a bit differently but kept the same meaning so that they were a little funnier, or even just a little more engaging. That's not really a problem all the time, you have some really good bits of dialogue in there, I just feel like the rest needs beefing up. the problem with adventure games as a whole is that the player expect most of the dialogue to be exposition, which isn't really that fun all round. You do have bits of dialogue that have nothing to do with the story, but for the most part, you only have dialogue that moves the story forward, and in an interactive environment, sometimes you want more, sometimes it's fun to fall into the backstories of characters, or just talk about nothing for a while. It makes the game a tiny bit more real. I also think you could have run for the humor in a few more places although I did find myself chuckling at parts.

I did enjoy the abundance of adventure game homages (mostly Lucasarts although I did see the Psychonauts one) and the music was very well matched to the game.

It's very rare to see this level of quality in a free game which seems to have been made by some very dedicated fans of the adventure genre and it's refreshing to see as it's been a while since I've seen a decent point 'n' click adventure game.

I think with a few tiny improvments this could prove to be a very good series of games indeed.

Hi there,

thanks for your critique, Joshi. Glad you like it. I guess you're right ... of course there are some points that could be improved - as usual. Actually the whole game is a one man job (aside from the pre-programmed engine and some animation and mental help) so if you do the drawing, coloring, animation, writing, testing etc you are sure to have a couple of things that are not 100% smooth - it's a miracle it's finished and it gives me the creeps to think about "a series" of games :). Well well, let's see what the future brings :) (Of course i want to make another one ...)

BTW Have a look at the other titles like "Nearly Departed" and "Something Amiss"

The problem most people get when starting a project like this is getting people to help them out with little things so it's not a one man job. People are usually reluctant to help because it's a project that's just starting and the majority of projects like this tend to fall by the wayside when the creator starts losing interest.

You've already shown you're capable of doing decent quality work and that you're dedicated to this. It should be quite easy for you to "recruit" like minded people to help you out with this now that the first chapter is out. Even if it's just a few friends or people on message boards, anyone to help out with little things.

I have to say, this being a one man job I'm very impressed.
