The George Mitchell Report

It was inevitable...so I figured I'd bring it up. As many of you know, Senator Mitchell's report on steroid use in baseball came out yesterday afternoon. There were quite a few names mentioned in the report the most prominent of which were Roger Clemens, Andy Pettite, and of course, Barry Bonds.

 

The report was based mostly on the testimony of a couple of club house attendents, personal trainers, and only a few players.

 

Do you folks think that based on having their name associated with this report guys like Clemens, a sure hall of famer before yesterday, should still get into the hall of fame? Keep in mind that:

 

1.) Clemens has NEVER tested positive for any banned substance

 

2.) There is zero proof beyond the word of a former Yankee employee

 

3.) HGH or Human Growth Hormone cannot be tested for in urine (which is how MLB tests it's players) so if he was using that we would never know.

I listened to Mitchell on the radio when he gave his conference. I think there's going to be a fair amount of 'he said, she said' going on for a long time, but they also had thinks like canceled checks to go from. I don't think I want someone to not get into the Hall of Fame based on hearsay, but if there's definitive proof, I think that person may end up not getting in.

 

I was surprised that Sammy Sosa apparently was not on the list.

Wait, wait...

 

A senator made a report on steroid use? Not, you know, the ones actually running baseball? And the senator thought that baseball is more important than national security and social ills?

 

This is a sad, sad day in American history.

actually, he's a former senator...and he was commissioned by MLB to do the investigation, and compile the report. He was paid for his work.

I was surprised that Sammy Sosa apparently was not on the list.

I was actually more surprised by the names not in the report than any of those named in the report. I have yet to read the complete report and feel it would inappropriate to comment on those that were named without a full understanding of the context their name was included in the report. My gut tells me this is a bigger issue than just those names we have heard and others just got lucky because their trainers, Doctors and friends were more closed lipped then those named within.

 

I was just glad a couple of former Astro players that I respect did not somehow end up on the list. Roger Clemens was disturbing for me (as a Texas Longhorn fan and Astro fan), but I have heard those rumors before.

And other corruptive evidence not listed in the report. Do not fool yourself, in case you don’t agree with Senator Mitchell’s politics, he is a very intelligent man and I would hope he did not base such accusations merely on hearsay.

Roger Clemens is already in the only hall of fame I recognize, but you are speaking of the Baseball Hall of Fame (the hall of fame that will not induct one of the greatest player ever into it ranks. The hall of fame that a life time ban continues even after the death of the one banned). I would need to hear both sides to make that kind of decision, but I’d say his chances are slim just by being named in the report. Is he a hall of famer, Yes. Yet, that does not get him an invitation to Copperstown.
