Astor
Before I begin, i'd like to point out that i'm NOT accusing any party of anything, I read the story, and thought it would make an interesting discussion. Furthermore, I'd like this dicussion to stick to the story (McCain's campaign allegedly asking Russia's UN envoy for a donation) and not have it drift into a mess of accusations about anything and anyone (no links accusing Obama of being a terrorist, or anything similar). I'll ask everybody now, so that it's clear from the start. In the interests of fairness, i'm tried to use sources that aren't particularly known for any bias (that i'm aware of). I did try to find sources from leading american news corporations, of both political leanings, but Fox doesn't have anything about it, so I've gone for different sources. http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSTRE49K69V20081021 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/us_elections_2008/7681168.stm EDIT: another link from a Russian News Agency: http://en.rian.ru/world/20081021/117848894.html So, could it simply be a mistake on the part of Team McCain? Or are they trying to cover something up? Could it be McCain's team only sees 'KGB' when they don't need money? Merged several posts, into this that were off-topic, please review the below to see things that are considered off-topic, and stick to the OP's instructions. - j7 I'm pointing out that Reuters has a credibility issue, and they've been proven wrong in the past. Additionally, the BBC has a similar problem, so I'm on topic, I'm just saying that based on prior incidents, there is a reason to doubt their credibility in the matter. I don't see how I can make it any clearer - the topic is about McCain allegedly asking for donations from foreign parties - not the credibility of the sources i've provided - if you wish to dispute credibility of news sources, kindly make a thread to do so. Further if you look at the last link I provided (which is from Reuters I might add), it further makes this story seem a little bit of a stretch. Going to quote the full article: -- Reuters http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN1628617320080816 And I don't see anything there about allegedly soliciting for donations. I'm not going to get into an argument over source credibility. Kindly take it somewhere else so that others might be able to talk about the topic. My intention in starting this discussion was to ascertain what people thought of the story, whether it was true or not - i've not accused anyone of anything, and merely provided links for people to read. That's not what you said in the first post: I'm referring to the article quoted in your post, which has no relation to the topic.
GarfieldJL
I'm not going to get into an argument over source credibility. Kindly take it somewhere else so that others might be able to talk about the topic. So in other words you're saying we are not allowed to point out the fact that this entire story doesn't seem credible. Nor are we allowed to point out information that supports the notion that this is nothing more than a smear job by those media sources. My intention in starting this discussion was to ascertain what people thought of the story, whether it was true or not - i've not accused anyone of anything, and merely provided links for people to read. And I'm telling you in my opinion that the story is nothing but a smear job, and I've explained why I think it's nothing but a smear job. That's not what you said in the first post I'm referring to the article quoted in your post, which has no relation to the topic. Ah but it does, the first article mentioned has to do with the 2006 incident of Journalistic Fraud involving Reuters (which is one of the sources you used I might add). Another left wing site that accuses McCain of wanting to go to war with Russia: http://www.propeller.com/story/2008/08/11/getting-georgias-war-on-mccain-goes-berserk/ Again why would the Russians honestly give money to someone that is trying to completely thwart their plans to bully countries like Georgia and the Ukraine? mimartin
The letter to Mr Churkin has a return form which carries the words: "I am proud to stand with our Republican candidates as the Obama Democrats and their wealthy liberal backers focus their attacks squarely on defeating Republicans and gaining control of our government.
I almost fell out of my chair when reading this. I love how only now they try to distance themselves from the Wall Street types. Every policy up to this current crisis has been to promote the greed on Wall Street. Really wonder what would be happening now if Social Security would have be privatized under the Republican plan. I believe Brian Rogers, in so far as his stating it was a computer error. I'd still like my question answered because the story isn't very believable. Why would McCain try to get money from Russia, when he's been bashing them over their invasion of Georgia as seen in the Washington Post? As the stories pointed out: Spokesmen for the McCain campaign and the mission accepted the letters were "a computer error".
A spokesman for McCain, a long-time critic of Russia, had a simple explanation for the fundraising letter's arrival at the Russian mission in New York: "It was an error in the mailing list."
Brian Rogers, a spokesman for McCain's election campaign, told the BBC the campaign had not itself received any complaints from the mission and that "it sounds like they're having a little fun at our expense." "It's just an error," he was quoted as saying.
There is no liberal media conspiracy to make the McCain campaign look bad, it is just a funny computer error. The original poster was very clear about the nature of the topic; further attempts to move out the scope of what was defined by the OP will be viewed dimly by me, and will lead to sanctions - ok? - j7
