Zhaboka
Several times. I also installed the DirectX 9.0 parallel package thingy, tried editing the registry as suggested for NVIDIA cards a few pages back, edited the swkotor.ini file various ways... And the game worked neither before nor after the registry alterations.

Q
1) Have you replaced the original swkotor2.exe with the new one updated by SecuROM? 2) Are you setting CPU affinity every time you launch the game? 3) You haven't done the Dantooine lag fix. 4) In swkotor.ini, the resolution should be the same under both "Display Options" and "Graphics Options". Did you install the game according to the instructions given in the first two posts of this thread? If not, then you're going to want to uninstall the game and then reinstall it according to the instructions in the first 2 posts of this thread. Start by updating DirectX as I instructed in the second post. Then install the game according to Astro's instructions in the first post, and patch the game according to my instructions in the second. Then download the replacement mss32.dll found here and the SecuROM fixed swkotor.exe found here, and put them in the main game folder after either renaming the old ones or moving them elsewhere. Then do the Dantooine lag fix as instructed in EDIT #4 of the second post. Lastly, set CPU affinity according to EDIT #3 of the second post every time you launch the game. Zhaboka
1) Yes. 2) The game crashes before it even gets to the main menu, so I don't have time to change the CPU affinity before it's gone. 3) I actually did, for some reason it didn't show up on the report. 4) Changed, thanks. After I changed the screen resolution, the game actually did get to the menu screen, but then when I tried changing it back to full screen mode in the .ini, it refused to start up again. Q
For fullscreen to work, it needs to be set to 1 under both "Display Options" and "Graphics Options". You haven't answered my question: Did you install the game according to the instructions in the 1st 2 posts? If you haven't, then you're wasting your time, and, more importantly, mine. I'm going to stress that this is not something that can be half-assed with any reasonable expectation of success.
Zhaboka
Oh, yeah, sorry, I did install the game using all the steps in the first two posts. The only step I haven't been able to complete is the CPU Affinity step because the game won't even start up, it crashes before the main menu every time. 90SK
Here are those nvidia fixes: Im posting them merely as a reference to anyone who is stuck and out of ideas. I have had no need of these fixes or tweaks myself. Here is the original thread at obsidian forums for reference --- mtfbwya This got the game working for me after everything else failed, though it's mad buggy and just crashed five or so minutes into it. Better than nothing: thanks for the post.
Q
Welcome, back, 90SK. You were having trouble? What are your system specs, and are you using Vista or 7? I've posted a definitive order of installation in Post #2 with all of the fixes that we've managed to gather and I've had good luck running both KotOR games on both the 32- and 64-bit Vista on several different machines, including a notebook with an Intel GPU. Oh, and stick around for a while.
jdinteractive
Hello, following some research I stumbled upon this thread and I just thought I add a comment as well. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit on an Intel Dual Core, 2 GB RAM and a Radeon HD4670 1 GB. I bought KotOR 1 during the holidays via Steam and although it was starting fine and I'm running it in (the internally possible) 1280x960 resolution, having a wide screen, I was getting random crashes all over the place. The game was auto patched via Steam to the latest available version. I checked it via the updater in the KotOR directory. In regards to the crashes these were sometimes happening when entering a dialog, sometimes when entering/leaving combat, sometimes just running along. This was all in Taris right at the beginning of the game. I had tried a few things already, but then looked at this thread and followed some steps in post #31. I reinstalled my Catalyst drivers (and upgraded at the same time to version 9.12 from 9.11) as I could not load my control center anymore, but the Catalyst drivers do not have the settings as such to allow and OpenGL configuration as the Forceware drivers do. So I applied the registry fixes outlined and changed compatibility mode from XP SP-3 to XP SP-2 and so far today playing for a good 2 hours and finally leaving Taris I have not had one crash. I'm not entirely sure which of the steps I took it was exactly or a combination of them all, either way my crashing problem appears to be fixed for now without the need for no-CD 'patches' or the likes. So I think, in short, for anyone with a similar setup the steps are certainly worth trying!

th3r0n
Im stickying this here to have a permanent reference to the KOTOR Vista fix. It has been around a few months, but has not made prolific progress at making the rounds... Thank you to SD Nihil for the original heads up In the tech area we quite often get queries about hardware etc from KOTOR fans querying a vista upgrade. This info will stay here for any Vista user wishing to find out about KOTOR and Vista. Im glad I no longer have to tell people to dual boot or try figure out Linux and WINE Ive so far tested K2 on my Vista 64 bit rig and all is working well. I will be testing K1 shortly. Im not sure what limitations there are, or what bugs persist for the duration of the entire game. I will attempt a summary from what I glean from obsidian etc relevant threads. Feel free to report anything as you come across it. The fix is a tiny file >> mss32.dll (372kb) HERE -Cheers to Qliveur for the updated link I invite others with Vista 32 bit to chime in as well if theyve given this a go. Shame on those LFN members who knew this fix and didnt spread it around better! * * * Source: Post by RenegadeSniper7 at [Tutorial]Original Team Gizka thread link Here's are the instructions to save you the journey/if you are lazy The instructions describe conditions where KOTOR1/2 is not installed on your Windows Vista system. 1. Insert the install disk. 2. Open up "computer" , right-click the disc drive and click "Explore", so you can have a poke around what is on the disc. 3. Find the file called setup.exe >Right-click> select Properties. >Click the tab labelled, "Compatibility". > Select, "run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2(SP2)" Pic For Steps 3,4(and 9) 4. Go farther down and also select, "Run as Administrator". In order to install KotOR II, you require admin privileges for the duration of installation to start-up. Playing it without this causes failure to launch. (Nb. if you are already logged in as an admin, this option may be grayed out.) 5. Run setup.exe. Select continue, and install as you normally would. 6. Once it is installed, you'll need to fix the mss32.dll file > this is done by simply replacing it with the fixed one from the above link 7. Once that file is downloaded, place it in your KotOR II's root file directory, eg: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR2. (or wherever you have installed it) When it says, "Move and replace", select that option. This successfully fixes the "KotOR II has stopped working" bug. 8. Almost done! Find or create a shortcut directly for swkotor2.exe. (or kotor.exe for K1 of course) This is different from the launcher file that automatically gets created. The file is located in your root file, which is where you put the mss32.dll file. This is as easy as right-clicking swkotor2.exe, clicking create shortcut. If windows says, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here, would you like on placed on your Desktop instead?", click yes. 9. Now, the last step! >Right-click the swkotor2.exe shortcut you created and select Properties. >Click on compatibility , then select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP 2". and "Run as Administrator"(if not greyed out) Good luck! I'll be back with my K1 results later, but if anyone else has had a go, please report. mtfbwya Your instructions are very detailed and easy to follow, but I have windows 7 and it just doesn't want to work. I disable movies (always had to even on vista or it would crash) and i start to hear the sounds for the tutorial on the ebon hawk and it crashes. I've done all of your steps, 1.0b update as well as replace swkotor2.exe and the ms32.dll file as instructed, 7 apparently sets processor infiinity to only the first core by default for this game. I can't find what I'm doing wrong, any ideas?

Q
I've tried to put together a correct order of installation and fixes in Post #2 if you want to uninstall the game and try again.
rhinohoops8
Alright, I've got a challenge for you. Here it goes... Un-installed Kotor 2 today. Actually, it was already uninstalled. I installed according to post #1. Downloaded the Mss32.dll file from post #2. I replaced it with the one from the game's main folder. I downloaded the Kotor2.exe replacement file from post #2. I extracted it in my "Dowloads" folder because it was un-extracted. I tried to put the file in the game's main folder but it said, "Windows cannot create a shorcut here. Would you like to put the shorcut on the desktop instead?" I said yes. The file is still in my downloads folder. I rename it to swkotor2.new, and try to put it in the game's folder, and it works. Remember, the old swkotor2.exe is still in the games main folder while I put my new swkotor2.new in. I go to my swkotor2.ini to try to do the things like in post #2. But half of the stuff that is normally in the .ini file is not there! I do no know what happened to it. Here is what my .ini reads: [Display Options] FullScreen=1 Disable Movies=0 Disable Intro Movies=0 Sort Modules=1 Width=640 Height=480 BitsPerPixels=32 RefreshRate=60 [sound Options] Sound Init=1 Disable Sound=0 [Graphics Options] EnableHardwareMouse=1 FullScreen=0 [Game Options] TooltipDelay Sec= ...and that is it. I try to change the graphics options and the display options to the things in post #2, but it says "Cannot create the C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotor2\swkotor2.ini file. Make sure the path and file name are correct." Don't know what I did wrong, but please help me. Thanks!
Q
Downloaded the Mss32.dll file from post #2. I replaced it with the one from the game's main folder. You mean that you replaced the old Mss32.dll with the new one, right? I rename it to swkotor2.new, and try to put it in the game's folder, and it works. Remember, the old swkotor2.exe is still in the games main folder while I put my new swkotor2.new in. Huh? OK, the best way to replace the old files is to rename them both, (like "swkotor2_old.exe" and "Mss32_old.dll") before you put the new ones into the game folder. You shouldn't be renaming either of the new files at all, because they won't work. That's perfectly normal because you haven't run the game yet. You can still put "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" under "Graphics Options" and set "FullScreen=1" under both "Display Options" and Graphics Options", though. I try to change the graphics options and the display options to the things in post #2, but it says "Cannot create the C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotor2\swkotor2.ini file. Make sure the path and file name are correct." Move the .ini file to your desktop. Open it, make the changes, save and then move it back into the game folder. rhinohoops8
1) Yes, I replaced the old Mss32.dll with the new one. 2) Ohh, ok, I'll rename the old one next time. But remember, it said windows can't create a shortcut here... maybe that was just 'cause I renamed the new file. 3) I tried the disable vertex buffer objects. But remember, it says Cannot create the C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotor2\swkotor2.ini file. Make sure the path and file name are correct." 4)Ok, I'll try that next time. Thanks for you help still!
Bastila Sham
Hi, got some of my own K2 problems. I recently installed K2 with the restoration content mod, then applied the vista fix. The game worked fine, and I played through the prologue and part of the peragus level. But when I try to start the game a second time, it refuses to do so and I get the windows crash message. Anyone know what is wrong? Here is my config analysis: [sWKotOR] ReportDateTime=1/14/2010 9:19:47 PM SysInfoVersion=v1.00.60 GameExists=1 GameVersion=v2.00.424 GameInstallLocation=F:\LucasArts\SWKotOR2\ [OS] Name=WinXP Version=Windows XP v5.1 build 2600 Service Pack 2 Service Pack=Service Pack 2 Status=Pass [swapFiles] c:\pagefile.sys=1024 [CPU] CPUCount=1 CPUSpeed=3600 CPUFamily=6 CPUModel=7 CPUStepping=6 CPUVendor=Intel CPUName=Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz Status=Pass [Memory] RAM=1024 Status=Pass [Disk Free Space] C: (NTFS), UNICODE=2.95GB D: (NTFS), UNICODE=24.40GB E: (NTFS), UNICODE=14.54GB F: (NTFS), UNICODE=9.26GB G: (NTFS), UNICODE=23.26GB H: (NTFS), UNICODE=74.13GB Status=Pass [CD-ROMs] DriveLetters=I:\ Drives=TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B,TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B,TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B [Video] Video Card Name= Video Memory=4096 Desktop Resolution=0x0x0 DirectX=DirectX 9.0c (4.09.00.0904) OpenGL Version=2.1.2 OpenGL Vendor=NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL Renderer=GeForce 8800 GT/PCI/SSE2 NVidia Driver=(null) Vid Card Status=Warning Vid Card Driver Status=Fail GL Status=Pass DX Status=Pass [Audio] Sound Card Name=Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) Status=Pass ;Game Options from swkotor2.ini [Display Options] FullScreen=1 Disable Movies=0 Disable Intro Movies=0 Sort Modules=1 Width=1024 Height=768 BitsPerPixels=32 RefreshRate=60 [sound Options] Music Volume=50 Voiceover Volume=50 Sound Effects Volume=50 Movie Volume=50 Number 3D Voices=32 Number 2D Voices=32 2D3D Bias=1.00 EAX=0 Sound Init=1 Disable Sound=0 Force Software=1 [Graphics Options] Anisotropy=4 Frame Buffer=1 Grass=1 Soft Shadows=1 Shadows=1 Brightness=75 EnableHardwareMouse=1 FullScreen=1 RefreshRate=60 Width=1024 Height=768 V-Sync=1 Texture Quality=2 Anti Aliasing=4 Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 [Game Options] UnlockedPlanetSongs=3 Enable Tooltips=1 Keyboard Camera Deceleration=2000.000000 Keyboard Camera Acceleration=500.000000 Keyboard Camera DPS=200.000000 TextureVariation=0 BodyVariation=0 AppearanceType=0 PCGender=0 GameCompleted=0 CurSithLord=0 Hide InGame GUI=0 Use Small Fonts=0 Hide Unequippable=0 Tutorial Popups=0 Subtitles=1 Mini Map=1 Floating Numbers=1 Status Summary=1 Enable Mouse Teleporting To Buttons=1 Mouse Sensitivity=30 Difficulty Level=1 Auto Level Up NPCs=0 Mouse Look=0 AutoSave=0 EnableScreenShot=0 Reverse Mouse Buttons=0 Reverse Ingame YAxis=1 Reverse Minigame YAxis=0 Combat Movement=1 TooltipDelay Sec=1 Disable Movies=0 [config] firstrun=0 [Keymapping] Action286B=8 Action286A=7 Action285B=10 Action285A=9 Action284B=102 Action284A=65 Action283B=98 Action283A=66 Action282B=100 Action282A=97 Action281B=98 Action281A=66 Action280B=100 Action280A=97 Action268=63 Action265=94 Action264=57 Action263=46 Action262=85 Action261=84 Action260=83 Action259=82 Action258=81 Action257=80 Action256=79 Action255=78 Action254=77 Action253=31 Action245=75 Action244=55 Action243=67 Action242=74 Action241=87 Action240=56 Action239=68 Action238=82 Action236=83 Action234=81 Action232=80 Action230=79 Action228=78 Action226=77 Action225=70 Action224=90 Action223=31 Action222=25 Action221=24 Action220=29 Action219=28 Action218=43 Action217=87 Action216=0 Action215=30 Action214=60 Action213=62 Action212=61 Action211=0 Action210=59 Action209=71 Action208=89 Action207=72 Action206=0 Action205=55 Action204=0 [Autopause Options] End Of Combat Round=0 Mine Sighted=0 Enemy Sighted=1 Party Killed=1 Action Menu=0 New Target Selected=1 [Movies Shown] Movie10=0 Movie 9=0 Movie 8=0 Movie 7=0 Movie 6=0 Movie 5=0 Movie 4=0 Movie 3=0 Movie 2=0 Movie 1=0 Movie 0=
Q
Did you install it according to the instructions at the beginning of the thread? You have to follow all of them. I'm not saying that you didn't; it's just that a lot of people have posted problems in this thread who haven't. If you haven't, please reinstall the game according to the large-print instructions in the second post of this thread.
