Elioplieno
Can either of the games even work for Windows 7? I emailed EA and the guy didnt give me a whole lot of information. Just the compatibility mode. When I kill something, I cant move
marriedto51
When I kill something, I cant move I'm occasionally getting a similar problem (sometimes after using medical items), running on Vista. I just use Tab to switch to a NPC for a while. I can also still click on things like doors and containers to move the character. (If completely stuck I quick save, exit game, and re-load!) It doesn't happen much for me, though. Perhaps it's worse for you?
Taskusorsa
You will probably first want to do a clean install of your nvidia drivers... which means you will need to wipe every instance of them from your system. There are uninstallers that will help, cCleaner for one, and IIRC nVidia has a tool for you to clean up before a fresh driver install. That got rid of the error message, but the shutting down problem still persists. It wouldn't hurt to post your specs! Qui-Gon Glenn
WHY?! Well, the only thing that stood out to me was your Direct X version. It is 11, which means that 9 should be included in it.... but not always the case. I would google the DirectX9 Runtime Installer, download it and see what happens. My guess is that a .dll or two are missing that for some reason are not producing error messages. BTW, you can install DX9 from your game disc, which will make sure the game is happy. It will not harm your DX11. Evil Q is the best resident troubleshooting resource, and he may be able to be more helpful in this regard. @Taskusorsa - Well, you knew your driver status was fail, but why is the question still... DriverSweeper.... If you have managed to clean out your HDD of old driver remnants, and then installed the latest (276.xxx) driver for that GTX275 (nice....), and it is still fail, my only other advice would be to follow my advice to nuclearspecs above and make sure your DX9 is fully updated. I am unsure about troubleshooting Steam games, as I am not really sure how much of the game is happening on your machine, and how much is handled by the Valve. Again, perhaps Astro or Q can be more helpful...
Taskusorsa
follow my advice to nuclearspecs above and make sure your DX9 is fully updated. I tried that but, sadly, to no avail. But thanks anyway, any help is greatly appreciated.
Qui-Gon Glenn
I tried that but, sadly, to no avail. But thanks anyway, any help is greatly appreciated. Bizarre. I am sorry that I was unable to help you. My only remaining idea is that there is possibly bad VRAM on that video card, but that is a longshot. More likely, it is just a little over my head. Have you contacted nVidia?

Q
WHY?! Because your laptop has an ATI GPU. ATI hardware has traditionally enjoyed a love-hate relationship with these games since the day they were released. None of my computers has an ATI GPU, so I don't know how to fix it. If those links in the second post don't help, or at least lead you to help, I don't know what you can do. I bought KoTOR from Steam. But after a few minutes of playing my computer just shut down. Then I updated my graphics card drivers. Now when I try to play the game it just gives this nasty error message saying: "NVIDIA display driver files from different (incompatible) versions of the driver have been detected. NVIDIA OpenGL acceleration is disabled in order to maintain system stability. To resolve this problem, update the Nvidia display driver. The latest driver is available at nvidia.com." swconfig gives the same error message. Any help? Unfortunately, no, because you have the Steam version and they've made changes to the game to make it Vista-compatible (haha) that I can't account for. Sorry, but the best thing that you can do is ask Steam about this. BTW, swconfig throws the same spiel about my drivers being out of date and failing as well, but KotOR 2 still runs fine. Here's my swinfo for reference: [sWKotOR] ReportDateTime=6/27/2010 2:45:06 AM SysInfoVersion=v1.00.60 GameExists=1 GameVersion=v2.00.424 GameInstallLocation=C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR2\ [OS] Name=WinXP Version=Windows XP v5.1 build 2600 Service Pack 2 Service Pack=None Status=Pass [swapFiles] ?:\pagefile.sys=0 [CPU] CPUCount=8 CPUSpeed=2833 CPUFamily=6 CPUModel=10 CPUStepping=5 CPUVendor=Intel CPUName=Intel® Core i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz Status=Pass [Memory] RAM=4096 Status=Pass [Disk Free Space] C: (NTFS), UNICODE=468.88GB E: (NTFS), UNICODE=927.01GB Status=Pass [CD-ROMs] DriveLetters=D:\,F:\,G:\ Drives=Optiarc DVD RW AD-7260S ATA Device,Optiarc DVD RW AD-7260S ATA Device,TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223B ATA Device,TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223B ATA Device [Video] Video Card Name=RDPDD Chained DD Video Memory=4096 Desktop Resolution=0x0x0 DirectX=DirectX 9.0c (4.09.00.0904) OpenGL Version=3.3.0 OpenGL Vendor=NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL Renderer=GeForce 9600 GSO/PCI/SSE2 NVidia Driver=(null) Vid Card Status=Warning Vid Card Driver Status=Fail GL Status=Pass DX Status=Pass [Audio] Sound Card Name=@oem8.inf,%xfi.devicedesc%;Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM) Status=Pass ;Game Options from swkotor2.ini [Display Options] FullScreen=1 Disable Movies=0 Disable Intro Movies=0 Sort Modules=1 Width=1280 Height=768 BitsPerPixels=32 RefreshRate=60 [sound Options] Music Volume=85 Voiceover Volume=85 Sound Effects Volume=85 Movie Volume=85 Number 3D Voices=32 Number 2D Voices=32 2D3D Bias=1.00 Force Software=0 EAX=0 Sound Init=0 Disable Sound=0 [Graphics Options] V-Sync=1 Anisotropy=16 Frame Buffer=1 Anti Aliasing=8 Texture Quality=2 Grass=1 Soft Shadows=1 Shadows=1 Brightness=57 RefreshRate=60 Height=768 Width=1280 EnableHardwareMouse=1 FullScreen=1 Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=

niblik
First, many thanks to all those sharing their fixes, especially Astrotoy7 and EvilQ for posts 1 & 2. Just in case it helps anyone else, here is how I adapted their instructions to get the version of KotOR (1) included in the "Best Of PC" DVD running stably under Vista 64-bit. Install as per Astrotoy7's instructions in post 1, but don't replace mss32.dll (the suggested replacement is byte-for-byte the same as the one on the DVD). Make a shortcut to swkotor.exe as in post 2 but you shouldn't install the version of swkotor.exe patched by SecuROM (because that version is only for the original four CD release of the game; the version on the DVD has the disk check built into launcher.exe, not into swkotor.exe). Add "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" to swkotor.ini (as in post 2). Use the in-game settings to disable soft shadows. That's it! Again, thanks for all the help: it's been great to re-discover this classic. I just wanted to chime in with my thanks as well! I have the Best of PC DVD myself and recently decided to play Knights of the Old Republic again. Thank God for this thread and you crazy dedicated tech guys who figured all this out! I got the game set up and played for about 6 hours yesterday without crashing. You guys are the best! Niblik
Hän-Mies
You are probably getting tired of this, but yes, I have an issue with KOTOR. So I followed your instructions when I installed the game. Everything is fine until the game reaches the menu. The game doesn't react in any way. I keep clicking the "New game", but my new game just doesn't start. I found out that when I press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and "Stop operation", (or whatever it is in english) the game asks "Do you want to quit?". Then I can use my keyboard to navigate but in few seconds, in my screen pop-ups "KOTOR not responding". This happens every time. Please I'm desperate. I want to have a "New game" also in my Windows 7. Thank you!

rhinohoops8
Hey guys! I'm back.... quick question. After I move the the new mss32.dll into the games main folder, can I delete the old one? rhinohoops8
A little snag I just hit that has brought back bad memories, is on #6 on post 2. I tried extracting the new SecuRom swkotor2.exe to the games main folder, but it says cannot create swkotor2.exe. I even deleted the renamed and deleted the old one. However, I think it's something with the WinRAR, because it was the WinRAR Diagnostic that said it cannot create the new swkotor2.exe . However, I was able to extract the new swkotor.exe in my 'Downloads' folder, I just could not move it to the games main folder. Help???

marriedto51
Alright, I checked and I am using an administrator account. I downloaded 2 more files, and i tried to extract files to the SWKOTOR2 folder. This is what it said: ! C:\Users\Ryan\Downloads\swkotor2 (1).zip: Cannot create swkotor2.exe ! Access is denied. It looks like your account hasn't got write permissions for the SWKOTOR2 folder. Try right-clicking the folder when you are viewing it in an explorer window, choose Properties, and check the settings in the security tab. Hope that helps. After I did that I was able to move and replace the Old file! Thank you so much! Now I can finish the steps and see what happens! Thank you! rhinohoops8
Okay now that that worked, I finished all the steps up to #10. When I start the game, it works and everything, and I can create my character, but after that, if I click the mouse or wait until after that first cutscene, it says SWKOTOR2 HAS STOPPED WORKING... . Another thing is that I can't set my CPU affinity. It says Access is Denied. Please help?
