jlew
I'm on this step now. --4) Remove the "Read-Only" property from the entire game folder (default location: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR). Right-click on the folder, select "Properties", deselect "Read-Only", hit "Apply", select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" and hit OK.-- After completing this step, I check the properties again, and it has been reset to read-only. Has anyone come across this yet? Edit: And yes, after un-checking the "read-only" box, I click apply, then ok. When I go back to properties to double check that it has changed, "read-only" is highlighted once more.
jlew
I guess I'm an idiot. I don't know how to use this 7z program. I can't figure out how to extract (or whatever) the mss32.dll file. I don't even know if that file is part of the 7z file I downloaded. Help!!
jlew
I did find an older version of the mss32.dll file on my portable hard drive. I originally downloaded it in 2005. Will it still work?
Mr.Seele
Heyho! At first, sry that I will not read all the 12 pages of this thread to find out, that none of the posted problems really fit mine and that none of the several solutions will work for me ... I've tried all the standard solutions you posted in the first few posts already without any sign of success ... if there is already a solution that will work for me somewere in that mass, please just let me know ;-) So what is my problem? When I start the game KotOR (1!) (if per launcher or per direct link doesn't matter to the effect), I come to see the Lucas Arts Logo as it should be, full size in fullscreen, but then in most times I try, the Bioware Logo comes in smaller size in the upper right quater of the screen. Then, if the previously described phenomenon comes to happen or not, the same may happen to the third introscreen, or sometimes the game minimizes to desktop and doesn't (usually) allow me to maximize it. However, if anything of the previous described happens (and that is in ~90% of the times I try to start the game) and I have the pleasure to reach the game's main menu, the mouse and the keyboard do not respond in any way for the game, except that I can move the courser (but I don't get a mouse-over effect on the buttons). All I can do then is to shut the process in my taskmanager. I have installed the 4 CD version and patched to 1.03. I run the game in 1280 x 1024. My Hardware is set up as follows: - Quadcore Processor - Windows 7 64-bit - ATI Radeon HD4850 - Enough Ram I have tried the following solutions without success: - Run the game in XP Compability Mode (through all my tests) - Run the game as an administrator (also all the time, because no UAC active) - Deactivate AERO and all the other compability options (except for 640x480 and 256 colors ^^) - Use the Mss32.dll and the securom-exe as discribed in post 2 - Apply the ini-fix (Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1) (which is unlilkely to do anything to that ...) - Install the DX 9 Setup, so that DX 9 libs are present on the system - Change the process priority slightly to "higher than normal" and try to set the process to only one of my processor cores (which required my to minimize the game to the given result ...) - Update Keyboard and Mouse drivers (have already been up to date) - Start the game directly by double clicking the swkotor.exe - torture google with any possible combination of words I could think of being useful to find an answer a whole afternoon - reinstall the game and try all the things again - restart my computer - wait a day - shout and curse The few times I happend to have access to the main menu I started a game and played up to the slums in four sessions with only one single crash of the game, where it got stuck in loading an area and was forced to quit by windows without further notice. But that is nor what I worry about at the moment. Except of this single crash everything went perfectly normal, even without any other of the solutions given above than running the game in XP compability. By the way: KotOR 2 TSL runns neat and smoothly without ANY afford other than to install the game. I'm starting to get very confused about all this and beg your help if anyone of you has an idea what I could try to solve my problem, because I am starting to like the game itself very much. PS: Sry if my english is a bit buggy, but i try my best, though I am not a native speaker ;-)
Qui-Gon Glenn
By the way: KotOR 2 TSL runns neat and smoothly without ANY afford other than to install the game. This is bizarre. TSL plays nice and KotOR is the problem!?!?!?!?! That's a first, and I wonder if you have damaged media? That 4 CD set is old, old my friend (I have one too, but I now play off the BoPC version). Not sure what to say, generally KotOR is much simpler to get going than TSL. I would recommend trying to update your driver, or roll-back your driver, as I have the same Vid Card (GTS 250) and for whatever reason, I have no FAIL on the driver report. My other thought is bad VRAM, although you aren't complaining of ghosting or weird pixellation artifacts.

bandrewc
I was able to get KOTOR 1 to work, thanks to the updates, ms32 fix, etc but KOTOR 2 keeps crashing at the same spot. My current PC hardware: ASUS UL80Jt Processor: Intel Core i3 U 330@1.20 GHz RAM: 4 Gb Video card: Intel HD Graphics/NVIDIA GeForce 310M (weird setup too... they switch off depending on graphics demands) OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, latest service packs and updates As I said, I got KOTOR 1 to work just fine, though I had an issue with the grass effects that was causing it to crash that I figured out early on. KOTOR 2 is proving to be a puzzle. I have followed all the steps on page 1, except for the Blit setting on the Intel video card (though apparently I read that newer Intel video cards don't offer that setting). I can get the game to load and can even start a new game, but it crashes right after the opening cinematic. I copied the crash data, so here it is: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: swkotor2.exe Application Version: 2.0.0.0 Application Timestamp: 41eddf8f Fault Module Name: StackHash_8ea0 Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00000000 OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 8ea0 Additional Information 2: 8ea0476bc4dc1b4a84541713f868b73c Additional Information 3: d063 Additional Information 4: d063338d7564c12191c41b831b737750 If you need any additional info, let me know

Banjulhu
Hi I am able to get KotOR 1 running on my win 7 64-bit laptop without crashing but I am having problems with the screen resolution and size, I can only get it to run in 1024 x 768 which means the sides of my screens are just black (not a major gripe) and when a movie plays it is tiny (really annoying), is there anything I can do to fix this? My graphics card is a nividia Geforce 330M if that is any help and its drivers are fully upto date.
Aeladya
I have a Compaq Presario C770 US laptop (no hardware upgrades, only an OS upgrade, all the drivers are updated) with Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and I purchased this game (KotOR I) yesterday on Steam as I no longer have access to my sister's Xbox. I also have KotOR 2 for the PC, but have not played it since I upgraded to Windows 7 (It worked fine on XP after downgrading from Vista). The problem I am having is that I am starting the game and after both logos I get a black screen with only the mouse showing up and occasionally the music. I have tried setting it to one affinity core as well as running the compatibility with Windows XP Service Pack 2/3 and running it as administrator and nothing seems to be working. I don't have my desktop set up right now so I cannot play it on that, but I am getting rather annoyed. I have the same problem with KotOR 2, the game worked fine on XP, but Windows 7 seems to not work very well. I seem to have tried everything and have been looking for a few hours for a solution with nothing. Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried the fixes here, but nothing has worked. It seems to be a Windows 7 only thing because as I have stated, KotOR 2 ran fine on this laptop when it had XP. http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv340/starrysora/laptopspecs.png Those are the specs I have. Edit: Never mind, the problem has been fixed. I wasn't using a Windows 7 Aero theme (fixed my Minecraft problem as well), if you don't use one with Windows 7 then the black screen with music and cursor thing happens. Jack Dark316
Hey does anybody else with windows 7 have this problem, or a fix for it. i just installed KOTOR and the game opens and runs fine up untill the menu...i click "game" from the launcher, and it shows the opening credits for lucasarts, bioware, and the high detail picture of malak, and instead of the menu that usually comes up after them i just see a black screen, but here's the wierd part: i still see the mouse, and in the right skin(that blue/green) and i can hear it when i press up/down/enter but i dont see anything and when i put the mouse over where the menu options would be i dont hear the noise it usually makes...any suggestions? Email me at Jack_dark316@hotmail.com (i would love to check this board often untill i get a response, but i dont have wi-fi on my laptop, but i can check my Email with my ipod) but dont let that stop you from posting a fix in the thread anyways in case someone else has the same problem. thanks in adance:thmbup1:
bandrewc
Not sure. I initially had some stability issues with KOTOR 1, but they went away when I followed the initial advice in this thread. As to KOTOR 2... seems to me that right now the people with the technical nohow to answer my question haven't been on in a while. I'm seriously debating just hooking up my old desktop that has XP and just using it to run the game. I just hope that a year or so in storage hasn't made anything in it go bad.
