Lando Jeffrini
^ The file will not let you change anything. This is because you did not follow the instructions in the post I linked to, directly above and just shortly before yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You need to have administrator privileges, you need to have made all of the folders as writeable...... Please, please take a look at the link I provided! ^ I followed instructions to the letter w/ admin priveleges and made all of the folders writeable per the instructions in your link(s). Even did it multiple times and still can't do anything w/ the file. BTW, I looked at this entire thread and tried pretty much everything and still end up with the same problem (locking up at Swoop Platform). A problem could be that I have Vista 64-bit. Thanks for assistance, but still think it's not going to work
Q
Did you follow step 8 in post #2?
Lando Jeffrini
Yes I tried step 8 but don't think my link was correct. The game is in a different location on my computer and I'm not sure how to correctly write the link. Here is where it's located now: "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic\LaunchKOTOR.exe"
Lando Jeffrini
How did the game folder's name get written in longhand like that? And where did the "LaunchKOTOR.exe" bit come from? Are you sure it isn't "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR\SWKotOR.exe" like it should be? If it is, then the shortcut's target should look like this: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start "SWKOTOR" /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR" /high /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR\swkotor.exe" Tried your new link and it didn't work, so I changed the link to where things were in longhand (why it's on my computer like that I have no idea) and it started the game like it should. Unfortunately, it still locked up in the same spot (about 75% when loading the Swoop platform to rescue Bastilla). Here's the new link: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start "Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic" /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic" /high /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic\swkotor.exe" Any other suggestions or is it time to give up? Q
1) Have you tried going back to an earlier save than the one you're using? 2) Is there a folder in your game folder marked "compatibility files"?
Lando Jeffrini
1) Have you tried going back to an earlier save than the one you're using? 2) Is there a folder in your game folder marked "compatibility files"? Went back to earlier save and it still locks at the same place. there isn't a folder marked compatability files. Think I'm probably out of options
Q
Let me take a look under the hood. Try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs: Post your system specs Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below: If you're using Vista or Windows 7, go into your game folder, find "launcher.exe" and right-click on it. Select "properties", then "compatibility" and check the box beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". Then check the box next to "Run this program administrator" and hit "OK". (EDIT by Q) Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2 (by running "launcher.exe"). Click on "Configure". Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window. Click "Yes" to continue. Click "Details" to view your system specs. Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop. Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post. You can leave out the keymapping and everything after that. Also, please specify which version of Windows you are using because the game can't ID anything newer than XP.

I suppose I could delete my saved games and start over, again, but doubt that will change anything. Any ideas on how I can possibly skip ahead of where it locks up? Q
Still not understanding why it won't let you add entries to the .ini file. Have you tried removing the read-only properties from just that file? Also, I've noticed that you have ATI graphics. Have you had any graphics-related problems? Lastly, are you using any mods?
Lando Jeffrini
Read only properties have been removed. Still no luck adding entries. Had/have no graphics problems. Everything I've played has worked fine. Don't think I'm using any mods, nor do I know what they are.

Q
Well, that explains the weird installation directory. This is just bizarre, though. I can't figure out why it's locking up in the middle of loading like that when it's been running fine up until then. Have you tried installing the game on a different computer and seeing if your save will work on it?

Qui-Gon Glenn
Sorry to have mis-judged your preparations Lando. I was a bit of a chippy jerk, in retrospect. I can confirm, Q, that that is the normal install directory for BoPC K1, in case you want to amend your guide. Forgive me for asking if I have missed it, but have you tried going to the most basic graphics for the scene? Also, please look in your <YourName> main folder on your PC, and also in your C:\ drive for the "compatibility files"... I seem to recall when I had vista for a moment that an edited .ini can end up in strange places.

oscarrdz
I'm having the exact same problem. Q
Well, damn. EDIT: You can try using these starting saves to get past character creation.
Lando Jeffrini
Out of curiosity, would you have a save from the Swoop races (in order to rescue Bastilla). I'm playing a Scoundrel, though I'd play any type of character at this point. I was thinking that if I got a save from that point or just past it (my game locks up loading the Swoop platform), I could insert it into my saves and potentially be able to play further into the game. Just a thought. I could send you my email or whatever if you think its possible. Thanks again for your suggestions and help.
