Fortier
I am still unable to get KotOR II working on my laptop. I have have installed using the step-by-step guide in post #1. I have tried the SecuROM fix. I have the up-to-date directx installed. I have also tried steps 1-7 in post #31. The exact error I am getting is when I attempt to start the game, I get a has stopped working message: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: swkotor2.exe Application Version: 2.1.0.0 Application Timestamp: 425588ba Fault Module Name: StackHash_fd00 Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00000000 OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3 Locale ID: 4105 Additional Information 1: fd00 Additional Information 2: ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160 Additional Information 3: fd00 Additional Information 4: ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160 My computer specs are: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz RAM 2GB GeForce 8600M GT 256MB GPU Was wondering if anyone could help me out. Q
Before we begin: 1) Are you setting CPU affinity every time you start the game? 2) Have you tried the Dantooine lag fix? Also, could you please use the swconfig utility to post your specs? Post your system specs Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below: Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2. Click on "Configure". Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window. Click "Yes" to continue. Click "Details" to view your system specs. Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop. Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post. I'll need the whole report, please. Fortier
Here is the report. As for setting CPU affinity, I am unable to do so as KotOR II doesn't appear under applications before it crashes. I have also tried the Dantooine lag fix. Q
Well, if you installed the game in XP compatibility mode as an admin and you've got the new mss32.dll and the new swkotor2.exe (the latter from SecuROM) in the main folder, and you're launching the game in XP compatibility mode as an admin, it should run. Try going back into the .ini file and change the resolution under Graphics Options to Height=600, Width=800, then Anisotropy=1, Anti Aliasing=0, Texture Quality=0 and Grass=0. Beyond that I'm stumped. Maybe Astro will come along and catch something that I'm missing.
Fortier
Still nothing. Been tinkering around a bit, I have managed to get the game to run with no sound, but that isn't exactly what I was aiming for.
Q
So it's sound and not graphics. Have you tried the "Force Software Sound" option?

Q
This is going to sound really stupid, but are you 100% certain that you replaced the original mss32.dll file with the one fixed for Vista? The reason I'm asking is that this sounds like the same error that people get with the original file.

Astrotoy7
Theres no point in running the compatibility tester as is not designed to recognise later generation hardware. Ive got a GTX 295 and it gives me the same message Dont forget - once you download the mss32 fix , you actually need to replace the one in your KOTOR root directory. This thread contains pretty much everything you'll ever find on this topic anywhere. If youve repeated everything corrrectly, are using the original discs - you have either missed something, or otherwse may not be able to get it to work at all... this is especially found to be the case for those who have laptops. What graphics card do you have ?? mtfbwya
Flaam
So, I just bought Kotor for my laptop via D2D. I've gone through many of the steps listed on this thread and around other forums on the internet to get this game running. The only issue is, the best fix to get the game working for me has been to go into the game configuration and disable all sound. This is a terrible inconvenience while playing KotOR, and I was wondering if anyone knows any fixes for this issue, or if I could be directed to another thread that holds the answers I need. Below I'll list my specs and the hardware scan by KotOR. Thanks. Edit: Let me be a little more specific about the problem. When I first installed the game, I immediately tried playing. I had no problems starting the game and creating my character, but the problem occurs immediately after that. Even after I applied all the fixes I read about, I cannot load into the game after creating my character unless sound is disabled. When sound is disabled, it seems like I can play just fine (I only tested this up until I got off the endar spire, to which point the game was playing flawlessly). Hopefully this little bit of extra information assists in finding a solution to this problem. Q
Make sure that you have replaced the mss32.dll on your main game folder with the one that's been fixed for Vista. When I say make sure I mean either rename or remove the old one before putting the new one in the folder, just to be sure that the game is using the new one.
Flaam
I've tried that a few times now. I went to the link in the first post and got the file, extracted it, and replaced the old file with it 2 or 3 different times but I still can't play the game unless sound is disabled. I'll try it again just to make sure I'm really not messing it up, but I'm curious if this is the only fix to this sound problem? Edit: I renamed the old file that was already in the main folder, and then put in the vista fix mss32.dll into the folder. I've looked through this thread quite a bit and have tried some other fixes (i.e. the install from the first post, the dantooine lag fix). If there is anything else you know that might help I'm willing to try it.

It sounds like youve tried every trick there is Looking at your specs through, its not going to be easy - your running an intel integrated gpu. Theyre are not really built for gaming (esp 965) I did notice you still seem to be on WDM drivers, so may want to give the intel driver update utility a try. There is may 2009 uopdate for the 965 chipset - the utility should find it http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm?iid=dc_iduu There is absolutely zero guarantee it will work for KOTOR though - but your system will be better for the upgrade If that doesnt work, and you really want to play kotor... you may want to think about a dual boot setup. Either that or just wait for TOR mtfbwya

Flaam
So, it seems like *some* progress has been made, but it's really not anything significant. I tried playing with the force software sound option turned on instead of the disable sound, and it actually let me load into my save file that instead of crashing at the loading screen, but it only took 4-5 seconds for the game to crash once I was in. Do you think I might have some corrupted sound files within the game, which is why it only plays with sound disabled, or is it maybe something with my sound card? the scan hardware that I linked a few posts up said my sound card is fine. I have an A205 (GL960 chipset, X3100 GPU and probably very similar to yours) and I found that you absolutely have to use that (with the game disc) with that chipset. Anything else (cough, cough) will crash the game. You'll also want to open your Intel graphics driver control panel, click on "3D Options", look for "Flipping Policy" and set it to "Blit". And yes, I got it running successfully on it.
