Hawkstrong16
I'm back yet again for more help. This time with picking a Linux OS to use. I have a Compaq Presaio 5000 with a Intel Celeron Processor speed is 667/66MHz My RAM is 512 MG(maxed out) And I have a 160GB HHD What would be the best version of Linux to run on my slow old computer. I have a very limited experience with Linux(I had Ubuntu on my laptop for a couple of weeks but my HDD got nuked not long after I put it on and I didn't feel like doing it again) Also if possible a link to a site where I can download a free version would be awesome Thanks for any help! Just a note for the moderators around here. From now on I'm just going to post the rest of my computer questions in this thread so as not to make a whole load of other threads. I hope that's OK
Q
I know little or nothing of Linux. This looks like a job for RayRay.
Astrotoy7
From now on I'm just going to post the rest of my computer questions in this thread so as not to make a whole load of other threads. I hope that's OK If you are referring to a project specifically then thats OK... otherwise there already is a thread for OS question. How about we change the thread title to Linux Build Questions...make it easier for those Linux boffins to spot *changes* My 2c. I personally liked Linux Mint. Its a derivative of ubuntu IIRC, but I havent used it for a while now. http://www.linuxmint.com/ mtfbwya

Hawkstrong16
Will these work OK with such a slow system? I have the latest version of Ubuntu and it lags pretty bad
Det. Bart Lasiter
Try Xubuntu, the Xfce desktop it uses it less resource-intensive. http://www.xubuntu.org/

Hawkstrong16
Well so far XUbuntu is working just fine.. Now my next question.. How do I install games on Linux. I'm trying for Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Ray Jones
So far I installed Ubuntu or Debian on older machines and they run fine. The lag you experience may be because of the video driver you use. What kind of graphics adapter do you have? If you want to run Windows games on Linux you have to use WINE (comes with most distros). They have a huge database on how to get games/programs running. This is the the entry for JK II: Jedi Outcast. It's rated platinum, which means it runs out of the box without any hassle. If you have any questions or problems feel free to PM me or come back here
Hawkstrong16
Its integrated in the Motherboard so I'm not sure what it is.. I picked up the Computer at a yard sale with out any documents and it didn't have a HHD so I'm kinda blind until I get it running with a OS that I know how to work with I did figure out the lag, I just had to change one of my graphics options(didn't know how to do before) so I've switched back to regular Ubuntu(had Xubuntu installed next to it on the HHD so no problem there) Dose anyone know anything about Absolute Linux? http://www.absolutelinux.org/ I thought about trying it but when I installed it, it asked for a username and password that I didn't know. because I didn't set one up during setup
Astrotoy7
Good to see things are coming along wirth your Linux rig Camo-man. You are in good hands with jmac and Ray I'd recommend asking questions here so others can read the answers too - always handy to learn more about Linux alternatives and get tips from our resident gurus mtfbwya
Hawkstrong16
So far so good, in fact I am talking to you from my Linux rig right now. I just wish I had a computer with a faster processor and more RAM. But seeing as how I picked this up for $3 at a yardsale I can't complain. I did decide not to install any game for the time being. To slow for that. But thank you all for your help. Especially Jmac and Ray, If I have anymore problems this will be my first stop for help

Det. Bart Lasiter
I think you have it configured to use the Intel graphics driver, so you should be able to run the JK games under Wine, although given your hardware, I don't know how well they'll run. Just look for Wine in the Package Manager tool (Applications->Add/Remove Software IIRC), install it, and then install JK.
