I know this has been discussed over and over here, but I get fascinated by many HG101 articles. They have a blog now and did a mini-review of Maniac Mansion for the Famicom that went over some things I didn't realize.

So they had no way to use anything resembling the "What is" command in Japan? No save system and instead 128 character passwords?! That's ****ing insane!

The Famicom version was notoriously bizarre, and I believe made entirely without LEC's involvement. Another awkward thing they didn't point out was that there is no scrolling in this version, so every room is crammed in such a way that it can be presented as a single, static screen.

I think it was nice of them to link to my defunct Maniac Mansion fansite I made when I was eleven!

There's a mention of it in there:

There's no scrolling whatsoever - everything moves screen by screen. The longer backgrounds are either split up into multiple screens or condensed into one. Various background details are missing, although it has the nude statue that was taken out the NES version.
