First I want to say that while this may not seem a major thing to the rest of you, it has a major relevance to me because I was living in the same neighborhood at the same time this kidnapping happened 18 years ago. This has been all over the news today.

Apparently the breaking news reports all over the media are that the man who kidnapped her kept her hostage all these years and that she has had kids with this man. He was in jail after being arrested for something. She came inadvertently to the police station to bail him out. The police identified her, and now it's in the news.

I don't know what to think other than mircales can and do happen. Her parents can now finally have closure after all these years.

Thoughts?

Yeah, that is quite extraordinary, that doesn't happen often as far as finding them either. But in this case, I guess it was a coincidence that they finally did.

Although I do recall a similar case several years ago in the late 90's where some teacher kidknapped his 12-13 year old student as she was waiting for a ride, or maybe she was walking home - I can't remember. But anyway he keeped the girl tied-up in a Motel room for several months, while he pretty much brainwashed her into thinking she had a different name and that she was someone who belonged to him. But eventually, he got caught and I think it was because one of the cleaning staff for the motel accidently found her, I'm not sure on that.

When she was finally returned to her mother, the girl barely remember her own mother and her own identity. For the girl, it was a long time before she remember who she really was, and of course the girl was never the same after the incident.

Anyway, not really a happy ending for these girls in both cases, I'll bet.

This type of stuff freaks me out

It's (a fraction) easier to understand people in emotional distress who lash out and commit sporadic violence towards others, but this type of planned and sustained victimisation over a period of almost 2 decades is simply spine chilling.

I dont think that state has the death penalty - which is a shame. Put him in a maximum security prison instead, let the lifers sort him out.

^^^I had thought after so long that she was dead. I even recall the $40,000 reward posters. Sheesh, just shy of 20 years. I can hardly believe it myself. Certainly can't claim to have imagined this happening all this time later.

It caused the town some dread and unrest as well as put an edge on for several months. The town is normally a very easygoing place.

Update: http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=8426124

I really hate it when guys rape much younger girls and they have children. It's like they can never forget their raper after that, but can't abandon the child. I hope this guy never gets out of prison.

Well, if it had been total constant physical abuse, I'm sure she would have found a way to get out at some opportunity. This is, however, one of those 'Stockholm syndrome' cases. But for now, savor whatever victory is here.

Tell you what though, a repeat offender for a sick and cruel crime like this? I'd be surprised (and duly disgusted) if he was allowed anything.

Still I have to wonder, was it all merely the (very messed up) individual to blame or did something like this happen to/around him at some point? Does the chain go on? When and where did it all begin? This isn't the first time, nor will it be the last time I ponder it. What a vicious circle in any case.

I was just reading about this a few minutes ago and was going to post the article I read, but I guess I was beaten to the punch.

Sorry about that, mate.

I can't conjure it either, to be honest. Although I am happy to see a basically happy ending to the story, now it's a question of the poor girl's overall health. Although this is over, it'll continue to go on for her. Which is upsetting.

Oh this guy ain't getting out nor is the wife. Nope, we don't do that Death Penalty here in CA neither I'm afraid. However, here in north CA, while there is a bit of a mission to stop that sort of thing behind bars; if it isn't inmates doing the sorting, it's a fair bet it'll be officials for sure. Think a miniaturized version of L.A. county's notorious Sherriff's dept. training. --And let's just leave it at that.

The wife will either be sent to a prison specializing in mental cases, or to a psych ward depending if she is deemed fit (or not) to stand trial. If she goes into a ward, and later recovers, she will likely stand trial and face prison.

 You have nothing to apologize for. In fact, I forgot to add smiley ":xp:" at the end of my statement.

It's true I was going to post a thread about it as I found it an amazing story, but like I always do, I check to see if it's posted first before I proceed, but it's nothing to take seriously. In fact, it's good that someone like yourself noticed it as well and thought of it as worthy news. :D

I was watching the details surrounding this case this morning while I was lying awake at 4am..(ugh).

It is indeed very disturbing, and being a father of a little girl myself even more so knowing that people like this are out there. It isn't that I didn't know it before, but I think having my children has made me distinctly more aware of things like this and I know I'm not the only parent who will acknowledge it.

I'm very glad that she'll be reunited with her family, but I can't even begin to imagine what the rest of her life will be like, let alone those children that were forced upon her by this monster of a human being. I definitely share the sentiment that not only should he and his wife go to jail, but they ought to make sure they lose the key.
