Speaking from inside his expensive glass pavilion at the Edinburgh Television Festival, the nepotic Chairman of the whimsically named News Corporation, James Murdoch, has (unsurprisingly) lashed out at the BBC.

 

"The corporation is incapable of distinguishing between what is good for it, and what is good for the country," he clamed. "Funded by a hypothecated tax, the BBC feels empowered to offer something for everyone, even in areas well served by the market. The scope of its activities and ambitions is chilling."

 

While Mr. Murdoch's criticism, as the man who runs Sky, the Sun, the News of the World, and the Times for a company which owns Fox and a significant portion of ITV, of an organisation for having too large a slice of the media pie is rather like smearing oneself with honey and then hitting a bee-hive with a large stick, does he have a point?

 

For inspiration, have some Fry and Laurie, a bit, you might say.

I've always taken Murdoch's words with a grain of salt, so it's nothing new. In fact, it's almost a carbon-copy of Bernie Madoff's unequivocal praise of the financial regulatory system, when he himself was maneuvering and exploiting it.

Sounds like the BBC is trying to compete in the business world, albeit with a distinct financial advantage. I'm not sure what the problem is, other than it's competition for Murdoch....

I would think all the other conglomerates would be urinated off as well with a foreign based media entity muscling in on their audience--especially if it has less a tendency to hyperbole on facts than all of them. NBC, CBS, ABC, Turner, TW, all of them as well as Murdoch.
