zabrak999 Posted August 6, 2011 Share Posted August 6, 2011 people will lose interest if there's nothing worth being interested in i can't believe he dropped the ball on the prequels man. another 3 classic star wars films? wow that would have boosted it's relevancy for another three generations EASILY think of all the characters, weapons, planets, scenes, lines...all the classic top tier **** that was in the classic films. That's the stuff that's been constantly referenced in pop culture and in conversation since the franchise debuted in '77 there's basically none of that in the prequels. So, less pop culture will spawn off the newer ****, and that means less people will be familiar with star wars. people can't just live off the original three films forever. It's not something that's easy to enjoy like the Beatles catalog or something. Film is entirely different. God, it's insane. As long as science fiction remains relevant, Star Wars and everything that came before and after it will remain relevant if only because future science fiction works will have been built upon them. If Star Wars is given a place alongside stories like "The War of the Worlds" and "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," then I'm sure it will still be around a century later just like those works are still around today. Al_Ciao Posted August 8, 2011 Share Posted August 8, 2011 I agree that the prequel trilogy didn't offer nearly as many (if any) classic memes like the OT did. I also agree it'd be wonderful to see new Star Wars movies, and better done. But, as has been pointed out, I don't think Star Wars will lose its relevance. Heck, Tolkien hasn't lost his relevance despite only having a few works that came out half a century ago. However, it would be great to see new SW films. I actually think there's a good chance of that happening. Even if Lucas says he's done, no more movies ever, once he dies, whoever inherits the franchise will probably make more, given how popular Star Wars is - it's easy money. I want to say I was 10 years old when I saw EP1, and it is what got me into Star Wars. I can say it is still my favorite Star Wars movie. (I know, I'm in the minority on this one.) I don't think we've seen the end of the Star Wars franchise. With the TV series in production, the 3D re-release starting with my favorite one, and future video games, I don't see it disappearing any time soon. All mediums of art can become obsolete over time, but the effort it takes to remake an old film for a contemporary audience is significantly greater than the effort it takes to remix an old song or rewrite an old story. Only last week they stayed over mine for the weekend and we had an episode 2 to 5 marathon. Star Wars will always have a solid fan base just like Tolkein. I was bored, looked through his VHS collection, and seen these 3 movies, and i asked him what it was about. He stared at me with a blank look on his face, grabbed the movies and put on all three original trilogy movies. I have been an addict ever since. My sons will grow up with the Blu-Ray, or 3D or whatever remasterred editions come after that. I love the expanded universe, and i get all the books i can get my grubby little hands on, my boys will not be as complacent about quality entertainment as i was. A very troubling twist though, my wife was talking to a couple girls she works with, discussing halloween. She was talking about dressing up as princess leia, and that i was thinking about a clone trooper. One girl stared at her, and asked "what is star wars? Who is leia?" the other girl looked at the other moron, and said "thats from Zack and Miri Make A Porno isn't it?" I swear i almost cried, and then got angry, and then fell into a mild depression. Neither of these girls will ask "what is star wars" ever again next time i see them. As long as nerds live, and sci-fi is a big part of culture, star wars, star trek, back to the future, and the other SyFy greats will live on.
