Obi Kwan Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 Ok I have a major problem. Everytime I try to shut down my computer, it restarts. Yes, I am choosing the shut down option and It does shut down, for like 3 minutes. Then it turns back on. Totally un prompted! I have no idea what is going on! It might help to note that I recently re formatted my hard drive. I am running W2K and I partitioned my hard drive (what relevance that may have, I dont know) Some of my specs: Gateway P4 1.7 ghz 128 mb of ram Thanks, I know I could turn to you guys!
The Truthful Liar Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 Seems like you're fooked... In my opinion... Cheers
GonkH8er Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 ergh... i corrupted my boot sector on saturday.... wasnt THAT a barrel of fun??? I've been systemless for a little while... All good now, as of 7am today.
Obi Kwan Posted February 26, 2002 Author Posted February 26, 2002 Still no ideas? This is really starting to freak me out now!
Pedro The Hutt Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 hmm.. try looking around in your settings.. and other wise.. format C ^_~ naw.. (and whatever you do.. don't do that format C thing)
db6 Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 See if APM power management is enabled, some computers have major problems trying to control the motherboard's power intake. I suggest that you turn APM off if it's on. To check whether APM is on or off in W2K follow these steps: 1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel 2. Double click the power option 3. On the APM tab, if enabled, uncheck "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" That should fix it.
Rogue Nine Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 I'm a fully-ordained minister, so if you wanna try that exorcism...
TheJackal Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 none of that hocus pocus crap will work on technologie. The answear to everbody's problem is VIOLENCE... or beer. In this situation you should play the demanding boss. Put on a dominatrix suit and take a hammer (not a sledge but those tiny ones) everytime it doesn't do something you want it to do or not fast enough give it a good smack on top of the tower. Keep doing so until you need a new PC. now you owe me 1$ for the tip.

When the computer turns off, use the switch on the back to make it stay off. You will have to use the switch again to turn on the computer though. The switch looks kinda like this: ______ [[ 0 1 ] --------
Roger Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 Please have a look here: http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm
Chanke4252 Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 Errrr, maybe another O/S? By the way Jess, Good work with that switch diagram, lol. Oh, by the way I have no clue what you should do other than call technical support if you got your pc already made.
acdcfanbill Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 if the computer is actually off, then there may be something goofed in the motherboard also.. my roomate's mobo has a short, and wont shut down unless you hold the button isnt technology wonderful?
Roger Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 That's no short, that's normal for an ATX motherboard. You have to hold the button for 4 seconds before the PC shuts down. You can change this in the BIOS. Roger
MikeC Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 LOL - you just made me remember something that happened to me. A while back I was having problems with my CD drive that nobody (including Dell tech support) could figure out. I jokingly told the tech on the phone that if the fix he suggested didn't work (this was like the 4th person I talked to) I was going to have a priest do an exorcism on my computer. He actually made a note in the file about and and said he didn't know if that would be covered under the waranty.
acdcfanbill Posted February 27, 2002 Posted February 27, 2002 it is normal for ATX if you dont use the windows shutdown... but when you shut down with windows, it should shut the computer off normally... with a lock up you need to hold the button... you shouldnt have to hold it if you want to re-start or shut down normally...
