Okay, so we all have our hopes high for this game, right? So, what was the last game to knock you off your feet. What was the last game to extremely dissapoint and do any of you fear the later for JO (even the slightest?). I know that I was looking forward to RTCW and Commandos 2. Both good games (commandos almost great) but both dissapointed me in that I never really cared to finish them. I can remember JK1 knocking me off my feet, but I can also remember the first wolfenstien doing the same. See what I am getting at. I am not tring to be a pessimest, but do you think that these days when we are able to track a games progress from start to finish, the joy of being knocked off our feet is reduced to a feeble shove from a school girl? How do you think this applies to JO?

Ok games that knocked me off my chair (standing up requires way too much energy) :D

Doom 2

X-Wing

Quake

TIE Fighter

Duke Nukem 3D

Dark Forces

C&C

StarCraft

Jedi Knight

Half-Life

Alien Versus Predator

X-Wing Alliance

Operation Flashpoint

Severance

In (vague) chronological order.

Games that were disappointments

X-Wing Vs TIE

Quake 2 & 3

AVP 2

RA, Tib Sun

The pattern? All sequels that did'nt sigificantly improve on the original. Am I worried about JKO? No.

There are two games that come to mind, Broken Sword and Fallout.

Broken Sword came when the torch of adventure gaming was at an all time low and out of nowhere it came and it was one of the most enjoyable games in my life.

Fallout came when the torch of RPG gaming was at an all time low and out of nowhere it came and it was one of the most enjoyable games in my life. ;)

Others:

TIE Fighter

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Day of the Tentacle

Curse of Monkey Island

Planescape Torment

Deus Ex

Freespace 1

Jagged Alliance 2

Ultima IIV

Rainbow Six

Aliens vs Predator 1

LBA 1-2

Jedi Knight / MotS

Baldurs Gate 1

Syndicate

best games i have played (in order):

1. Outcast (edit: not Jedi Outcast at least yet but Outcast by Appeal)

2. Deus Ex

3. Jedi Knight + Mysteries of the Sith

4. Thief 1

5. Thief 2

6. System Shock 2

7. Unreal (probably most atmospheric game ever, especially with the music it had, even if gameplay was simple)

no other games really hit me big time

This one is surprising even to myself.

GTA3. I just played it very recently, and I was amazed by how polish the game is, the attention to detail, and just the fun factor. I can just be driving around the city all day, and not get bored. So yeah, the most recent game that knocked me off my feet. Considering I generally don't like games like that, it's quite a statement.

Other games that really wowed... Final Fantasy 7, Tie Fighter, Privateer, quake 2,

Games that knocked me off my feet.... With 1 being the best, and 11 being the worst of the best (though still good).

1. Dark Forces (best game ever made.... for now... :))--PC

2. Asheron's Call (Before the dark times... before the Ub0R L33ts)--PC

2. Super Mario 64 (tied with AC, some of the fondest memories in a video game... especially the Boo mansion)--Nintendo 64

3. Jedi Knight (I will always remember level 6...)--PC

4. Super Smash Brothers (Ok, so it wasn't REALLY amazing, but it was so darn fun...)--Nintendo 64

5. Super Smash Brothers: melee (same as above, but the fun factor was knocked down just a wee bit after playing the original for a long time, but it was still VERY fun)--Gamecube

6. Tribes 2 (Eat my-awesome-shazbot!)--PC

7. Sonic Adventure (Very, very cool when I first played it... Still a good game, the graphics were amazing to me when I first played it... It also has some very fond memories in it... such as running through the jungle (with sonic) finding a way into the lost world...)--Dreamcast

8. Anarchy Online (Ok, so maybe the actual game wasn't too great when it first came out, but it's graphics, were and are amazing... especially when it first came out, really knocked me off my feet. Also, the game is pretty good now, after all the patches they did)--PC

9. Sonic Adventure 2 (They took out my favorite part of the first game (adventure) but the sonic and shadow levels are so fun... If only it could've retained the adventure levels then it would've been a truely awesome game...)--Dreamcast

10. Paper Mario (I'm honestly not sure what I liked about this game, but it was really, really fun, and had some cool areas in it.. such as the Boo Mansion, the haunted forest... but the final battle kind of sucked... It was also one of those games I think back fondly on...) --Nintendo 64

11. Mario Kart Racing 64 (A really fun game, though I don't really have too many "fond" memories on it... I loved the battle mode)--Nintendo 64

Games that were freakin awesome:

Diablo II

Half-life

Jedi Knight

Dark Forces

TIE Fighter

X-Wing

Games that were disappointing:

Galactic Battlegrounds *coughaoemodcough* (thankfully I was saved from buying it by playing the demo)

Wing Commander Series (after playing X-Wing and TIE Fighter...)

The Phantom Menace (at least I got it on sale...)

Hmm tricky..

I was really taken with JK1 when I played it, partly because it was the first game I bought when my parents finally got rid of our rubbish old 486 and bought a shiny new Pentium 3 with a Voodoo 2 card. With a lot of new games I find myself spending more time tinkering with the options/my hardware than I do actually playing the game - RtCW being an excellent example.

Anyway, here are my favourites that blew me away at the time I got them (in no particular order):

Doom

Gabriel Knight 1 (CD-ROM version)

Baldur's Gate 1+2

Deus Ex

Dark Forces

JK1

System Shock 1+2

X-Wing/Tie Fighter/X-Wing Alliance

Unreal Tournament

Wing Commander 3+4

Robocop (ZX Spectrum/Atari ST/Arcade versions)

Half-Life

Games that completely underwhelmed me:

RtCW

Max Payne

Star Wars: Starfighter

1. Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis (best game ever!)

- i still love those old point and click adventures and this one had Indy in it and had plenty of humour.

2. Half Life

- the marines in half life had some of the best AI i have seen. They worked fantastically in a team and made the game a real challenge.

3. Medal of Honour

-brilliant scripted sequences. The AI is great too, the way the nazis manage to find cover and then pop out to fire at you.

4. Quake

-great gameplay, great monsters, great multiplayer.

5. Jedi Outcast?

-i live in hope!

Welcome to the forums, sneeze! I hope you like thease forums. Most of the members will also welcome you and are very active. (Unlike me.)

The games that have knocked me off my feet ...

In order of how much i liked them:

Age of empires series

X-wing alliance (It was the first star wars game i played besides rebellion.)

JK (Got it after Alliance and loved the saber action, even though i never finished the game.)

Galactic Battlegrounds (Not as much because i had already played the AOE series.)

Dissipointments:

Phantom Meanace (I loved it at first, but got really mad at the terrible ending.)

Episode I racer (Same as above except i just got really bord of it and the fact that you can't smash other racers.)

You see i havn't played many non-star wars games except decent and age of the empires seiries, and a few others.

Sithcloak

I was so dedicated to Black and White that I had dreams about it. I posted on the discussion forum for two years, I read all the web-sites, I was pretty well known. Every day was looking forward to Black and White.

You think you guys know hype? You've seen nothing. :D Plus, the newbie tolerance there was horrible.

I still post there, kind of out of habit. The game sucked. :(

Guest X-Vector

At the moment I'm writing this there are 14 replies and not one of them mentioned a Ravensoft game (JO doesn't count).

Hmmm...

Anyway, mr. Indy Jones #9 here has touched upon a concern of mine that has really started to occupy my gaming related thoughts lately.

I too wonder where all the excitement has gone, where all the games are that I'd like to play until I fall asleep in front of my monitor.

Elite Force? The demo got me hooked at first, I'm a scifi enthusiast and the atmosphere was certainly there.

Play the game beyond the opening Borg levels however and you start to notice a pattern - every other alien seems to harbour a deathwish and charges head-on, Serious Sam stylee.

The repetetiveness of the gameplay and the linearity enforced by the storytelling really 'shone' through when I replayed part of the game recently.

Max Payne?

Well, it's third person and it has Bullet Time™, but apart from these minor differences ( ;) ) the game basically features the same shortcomings as EF.

RTCW?

Again, the game starts off pretty nicely, but boredom starts to sink in faster than you can say "sauerkraut".

No surprises, no unforgettable experiences, no true innovation or even evolution.

I managed to play as far as the X-labs, but I don't know if I'll ever feel the urge to finish the game.

Major disappointment, loved the MP test (Beach map) though.

MoH:AA?

That's more like it, lots of involvement, nicely atmospheric, great looks and sound design - but why do I get the feeling I've already played the game?

I feel the major gameplay surprises have been spoilt by the countless in-game videos (Omaha beach!) and screenshots, the previews, reviews and messageboard comments.

The engagement is still there, but it's been severely dimished and the shock has gone completely AWOL.

However good it may be, this simply is no Half-Life experience.

Jedi Outcast?

I fear the game will follow the same path, hopefully it'll be a lot closer to MoH:AA than RTCW in (singleplayer) quality, but dont' we already know far too much about this game to be truly surprised by its gameplay and world design contents?

I think so, though I hope I'm wrong.

Now for a list of personal faves (bound to be incomplete):

- Dark Forces (the game that started it all or me - Dark forces Forever!)

- Duke3D (yeah baby!)

- Quake (loved it for its dark atmosphere)

- Jedi Knight + MotS (another DF game, another hopeless addiction)

- Thief 1 & 2 (atmosphere by the bucketload, brilliant sound design)

- Half-Life (still my no. 1) + Opposing Force

- System Shock (2) (ditto + addictive RPG elements)

- Deus Ex (like SS2, but less claustrohobic and even more comprehensive)

The only games possibly released this year that IMO have the potential to break the mould like Half-Life did:

- Duke Nukem Forever (my current Holy Grail)

- Unreal 2 (slim chance, but just maaaaaybe)

- Half-Life 2 (not officially announced, but the only game that could dethrone DNF as my "most wanted" game)

Welcome to the forums, P129, reserved_name, RichyBoy, Sneeze and Hoowl. Hope you're enjoying your stay. Here.. *hands each a genuine chocolate Jedi Medallion*. They're tasty. ;)

Games that knocked me off my feet...

1. Wolfenstein 3D (first FPS...nuff said)

2. Doom (very atmospheric FPS)

3. Eye Of The Beholder II (first RPG I ever played...a friend and I played that thing for hours)

4. Dark Forces (first SW FPS)

5. Hexen (3 character classes to choose from...cool weapons...great game)

6. Quake (first creepy FPS with a proper 3D engine...and the first game I played in GL with a Voodoo 1 card)

6. Jedi Knight (best FPS ever)

7. Heretic II (best 3rd person action game ever)

8. Unreal (best looking FPS ever)

9. Half-Life (best all-rounder)

10. Rune (atmospheric and fun hack'n'slash)

11. Unreal Tournament (the bots were killers)

12. Cossacks (introduced me to RTS games - and I always disliked the genre).

Games that disappointed...

Quake II (nice design...but too easy - especially the end boss)

Daikatana (fatally flawed...released way after it's time)

Klingon Honour Guard (vach lach bakarach...or whatever)

Hexen II (I didn't think it captured the feel of the original)

Shadows Of The Empire (the controls and jerky switching between game styles just plain suck)

Tomb Raider (didn't like the controls)

And as this is more of a general game like/dislike thread, it's being airlifted to the Swamp. :)
