Tyrion Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 I checked the official site for star wars charecters, ect. I found out that the death's star super laser had 8 cannons which would fire apon the planet. That part of the ship didnt look well defended so why couldnt they just bomb the cannons so they wouldnt have to worry about the time?Maybe the rule of more excitement overided that?
Tyrion Posted June 2, 2002 Author Posted June 2, 2002 there was also a shield at the thermal exhaust tube.
Chaotic~Angel Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 Maybe the cannons were strong or something, or maybe it just sounds cooler to fly through a huge trench being shot and to reach the end and use the force to blow it up. First one at least. Also who wants to take the easy way of shooting it from there when you can fly into the core and shoot stuff I mean honestly
Tyrion Posted June 2, 2002 Author Posted June 2, 2002 I kept thinking in reality...must not think like that...must not think like that...
NerfYoda Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 IIRC the original death star's surface was covered in turbolaser emplacements & carried a small army of TIE fighters for defense. The death star in ROTJ wasn't complete, so all of it's fighters and lasers werent't in place. That's why they had the shield. I'm pretty sure they put extra lasers/etc around all the important stuff like the big ass planet lasers
~*H0ly_sHat*~ Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 ...or mayb the rebels didnt wanna risk getting near those cannons since they'll never know when it's firing until its too late....¬ hey, a cannon that size would probably generate a lot of heat that simple starfighter shields couldnt withstand...
Vagabond Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 Oh ya, that makes sense. Because flying your fighter down a narrow trench, and not even dodging, with three fighters on your tail, is much more safe than the remote possibility that they'd fire the Death Star's main lasers at your fighter, even though the Death Star hasn't got a clear shot at Yavin IV yet
mInk3nine Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 the whole point was to blow up the death star and rid the galaxy of the empire right? so why would the rebels want to take out the canon and bone out when the empire could just fix it and use it again.
greedo626 Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 why did Tarkin wait for a shot at Yavin 4 when he could have just blown up Yavin and then it's moons would go boom to. ????? sometimes the Empire is kinda stupid.
Tyrion Posted June 2, 2002 Author Posted June 2, 2002 what I meant was destroy the cannons first so they wouldnt have to worry about the time before it sent Yavin IV to kingdom come.
Spykke Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 why did Tarkin wait for a shot at Yavin 4 when he could have just blown up Yavin and then it's moons would go boom to. ????? If Yavin blew up, along with four moons, the Death Star wouldn't stand much chance of survival, right?
Vagabond Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 According to offcial statements from LucasFilm, the explanation is that the first Death Star's super-laser didn't recharge as quickly as that on the second. Supposedly, the first Death Star would take somewhere in the area of 24 hours to fully recharge.
greedo626 Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 Originally posted by Spykke If Yavin blew up, along with four moons, the Death Star wouldn't stand much chance of survival, right? heh heh. good point.
Murdoch Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 What's the size limit on that cannon anyway? Yavin 4 was a gas giant after all.
lagged Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 Why did they have to fly thru the trench? It seams just shooting the exhaust port would work. The capitol ships could just shoot it with Turbolasers or something.
Tyrion Posted June 3, 2002 Author Posted June 3, 2002 The tube was protected by laser shields, and photon missles could go through it.But, then again, why couldnt capitol ships attack the main cannons with a massive missle launch. The shields couldnt be as strong as Hoth's shields, because it would be too strong to fire anything through it.
lagged Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 well ok but why couldn't an xwing just fly to it without going thru the trench or whatnot.
Tyrion Posted June 3, 2002 Author Posted June 3, 2002 That's also what I wondered...maybe the trench had less cannons than the surface?
lagged Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 yeah... but they still got wasted in the trench. luke shoulda stayed on yavin, and when the deathstar shot he shoulda reflected the beam back upto it with his lightsabar.
Tyrion Posted June 3, 2002 Author Posted June 3, 2002 But it's hard to reflect a laserbeam THE SIZE OF A CONTINENT!
greedo626 Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 first of all the rebels didn't capital ship at Yavin 4 and even if they did they would have been like totally destroyed. it was said at the flight briefing that only starfighters could hope to attack it cause the Empire desinged the Death Star to fight off large capital starships. and the destroying the exhaust port wouldn't have destroyed the Death Star anyway. you needed to shot a proton torpedo down the exhaust port to set off a chain reaction that destroyed the Death Star. and the Death Star was so scary cause it could blow up whole planets.
