That's pretty silly, first off the idea that that man is wasting his talent seems pretty uncapitalistic, I mean he's obviously making a good deal of money at what he does, probably more than he would as a world reknown genius :p, he's just taking his piece of the pie, like any good American....

Secondly I find the reasoning that playing games that are violent makes you a violent person. Why did these people play the games if they weren't violent people?... Were they pacifists who one day got a concusion and accidentally bought Quake thinking it was an interactive guide to not hurting people, and then played it and suddenly became angry animals? The people who play these games are clearly already violent, and frankly it's better that they release it there than releasing it in a schoolyard with an automatic weapon. You can suggest that it desensitizes them all you want, but I'm willing to bet that a soldier who played Quake before going into a real combat situation might tell you that it in no way made him more ready to deal with the realities of such violence.

There are 'studies' that suggest that children who watch more violent programs, behave more violently, but I generally question the validity of them, because of some simple concepts. If I am a person who finds violence repugnant, and I watch a violent program on TV, I won't become more violent, I'll watch something else. Again, the children who watch violence on TV are already naturally violent, it isn't pushing out something that already isn't there.

When you think about it, human beings are interestingly evolved animals, with animal instincts, and desires. Acts of violence are common throughout history, and it was often children who had to commit it, by fighting in wars, or protecting their homes. the fact that it's a few hundred years later does not mean that those desires and instincts have abated, and some people are unable to deal with that in an effective manner. I would suggest that violent games and violent movies are not the vector, but rather a symptom of a troubled mind (if they are taken to extremes).

What the heck is wrong with that guy? I think John Carmack is an awesome game developer (only problem is that most, if not all, of his games, have practically no storyline, but I don't think that's his department anyway.) I've been playing Doom since it came out when I was 6, along with childhood-time favorite Mortal Kombat, and most people at my school think I'm so calm, cool, and unviolent that if the PA came on and said the school would be nuked in 30 seconds, I'd simply continue with what I'm doing. I think games have the opposite effect. It lets you take out your anger on simulated people or bots, so you won't have to do it for real. That's what I do, and when someone picks a fight on me or cusses me out or whatever, I let it pass and not ruin my day (I probably wouldn't be able to beat the guy up, anyway.) And, in the end, people think I'm a cool guy, 'cause I never let anything bust up my groove. The most I get really miffed at is probably in these forums how Darth Sidious is losing in the Sidious vs. Yoda poll, how I'm not getting a lot of replies in the MP Announcer Mod thread, and how I can never get a date.

So, as you can see, my problems are pretty trivial (except maybe the last one.) All I need now to be the happiest man in the world is you checking out the MP Announcer Mod thread here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=653773

, voting for Darth Sidious here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=653796 , going out with me (if you're a girl), or making a skin of whoever wrote that dumb article so I can either frag him with the Redeemer in Unreal Tournament or saber his ass in JKII.

NASA? How is that gonna do anything?

If you had clicked on the link posted in the original post and read the article, you would learn that the writer said that John Carmack was wasting his talents and should be working for NASA.

My reference was in jest, stating that maybe the writer should go work for nasa instead so we don't have to read his crappy articles.

What I dont get,is the poster said that he was making Violent games, but that he would be better working in military.Uhuh, which does more killing-A organazation which is mainly about war and killing,or a game that let's people focus their anger, but helps makes(in a small way) a couple killers.

"Yes mommy, it was DOOM that made me put Kitty in the microwave."

"Yes teacher, it was DOOM that made me stab Bobby with my pen."

"Yes Your Honor, it was DOOM that made me blow up that bus with a rocket launcher. Oh, and music, too."

Okay, yeah... I am so tired of hearing people say things like this. REALLY tired. If they had their way, we'd be doing nothing but complex computations and database entry on computers. Maybe playing Teletubby games. Maybe, if that's not too violent for them.

So a big "____ you" to all those who would blame games for the handful of psychos out there. From the bottom of my heart.

Yeah, you got that one right, Zindell.

The only truly sad part is:

"A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months

after he lost a "death match" and became catatonic."

Gee, I hope I can beat someone so bad on a game that I cause them to go catatonic. Someday, maybe.

Yes, turn them into a vegetable.... exxccellent... yesss...

Yeah, I thought it was the other way around, too, considering that last X-mas I bought the Quake Collection (Q1, 2, and3) and was mad because all three games relied majorly on OpenGL crap. My card sucks with OpenGL, and I hate it (yes, I know JKII is OpenGL, therefore it runs so bad I can't play the single player, and not much multi either. Thankfully, they invented the friend's house.) Anyway, whoever wrote that article sucks. He sucks bad. He sucks long, hard c-... well, I'm not sure if I can say that here.
