Spoilers below.

That may be when Gandalf dies. It's a bit different than in the books, but it could happen that way in the movie. As for Gandalf not being White, he's not. At least not in Fellowship. However, once he dies, he comes back not as Gandalf the Grey, but as Gandalf the White, the new leader of the order, replacing Sarumon the White.

the films are being true to the books

SPOILER!!!!:

Saruman got killed in the end of ROTK. Remember, Wormtounge killed him.

END OF SPOILER!

The films aren't all true to the books either. Examples:

1. Tom Bombadil

2. Gandalf acting hysteric when he founds out about ring (movie)

3. It was really an elven prince wich transported Frodo to rivendell, not Arwen

4. Elronds council was way to small.

5. Boromirs wanting for the ring was much more in the movie.

6. It was not Saruman who sent the snow on the fellowship when they crossed the mountains, it was a kind of odd powerful thing in the mountains (who did not like elves)

7. In the book, it was never a troll in moria, frodo got stabbed by an orc.

8. They did not know about frodos mithril shirt before after they had left moria.

9. Boromir did not die before the two towers.

10. The little snitch in Bree, who Sam bought pony from, did not appear in movie.

11. The way Sam and frodo meets merry and pippin is not in the books, they were with sam&frodo all the time

And much more

My advice: Read the books.

You got to love the Rohirrim in TTT and ROTK.

sorry man, but gandalf IS white in the second movie (and book). when gandalf comes back from the dead he shows up in the forest.no spikes involved . seriously. and since the films are true to the books we can reasonably assume that this pic is a fake, or maybe a funny outtake they threw in.... or perhaps they added some other wizards in for fun and one got spiked =) in any even that is NOT gandalf OR saruman. as gandalf lives through the series and saruman is killed by wormtongue in the final book.

lol half of the ppl went 2 c the movie has read the book and just want to see how good teh movie is. As for cutting out tom bombardil, barrow wights and glorfindel.....there is the matter of time, 3 hr is long enough for a movie, and besides peter jackson dont want the ppl who havent read the books to get confused with too many characters and side plots.

another thing is wasnt aragorn supposed to surprise everyone later on when he reveals he's the king?

True, but Tom Bombadil was a huge, huge part of the story.

His encounter with Frodo and the ring and Elrond's impression of Tom B. are pretty important. Still, I thought they did a good job on the movie.
