Dateline: Coruscant - Jedi blamed for Clone Wars

Alright, the Jedi are going to be wiped out in Episode III... but how does the sentiment for the Jedi take such a polar turn so quickly? Here're a few theories, tell me what you think or come up with your own or whatever... this is the all-purpose Jedi Purge thread, so go nuts!

Theory 1: The Jedi will be blamed for the Clone Wars, which will spread all across the galaxy, cost many civilian lives.

The civilans, up in arms about the Clone Wars and demanding answers, accept Palpatine's claim that the Jedi were behind the war, attempting to destabilize the Republic and take control (basically, blaming the Jedi for what he's doing).

In the beginning of the Clone Wars, the Jedi are everywhere, on all fronts. A Jedi founded and financed the Sepratist Movement, an act that proved the catalist for the Clone War. Because of the actions of Count Dooku, the Republic is forced to arm itself and join the battle. And who so conveniently descovers the Clones just when they're needed? A Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi. And who is the first to assemble the Clones and lead them into battle? A Jedi, Master Yoda.

The result: The Senate and people turn on the Jedi and give Palpatine permission to use his Clone Army against the Jedi to wipe out the corrupt Order.

Theory 2: After the Clone Wars, the Jedi decide to follow up on Count Dooku's claim that the Republic is under the control of the Sith Lord. Finding that Dooku was telling the truth, they attempt to "purge the Senate" (The Star Wars, 2nd draft). Palpatine, the center of their investigation, accuses the Jedi of starting a witch hunt, again with the intention of destabilizing the Republic and taking over.

The result: The Senate and people turn on the Jedi and give Palpatine permission to use his Clone Army against the Jedi to wipe out the corrupt Order.

Before the Jedi Order is erraticated, Palpatine claims that his intention is not to destroy the Order, but to purge it. To prove this, he puts a Jedi in charge of his Clonetrooper army. This Jedi, of course, is Anakin Skywalker. Anakin will be the first of a new Jedi Order, one that is without corruption and loyal to the Republic. This, of course, is a lie, a ploy to appeal to those who respect what the Jedi stand for.

Thoughts?

I like you're second theory Jedi_Monk.

I think that the Jedi will mostly be purged by the battles of the Clone Wars. Palpatine will send out the Jedi on missions so that they will die. It's convient and easy.

Then when the timing is perfect. Palpatine will have the Clone Troopers wipe out the Jedi. He will convince the republic that the Jedi are doing bad things with evidence. Like in Rules of Engagement. They will be set up to look like the bad guys when they are doing what is being asked of them by the republic. Palpatine can have a video tape of the Jedi conspiring with the separtist's. Then the republic will stop supporting the Jedi and Jedi will lose sympathy.

1. Your thinking on this JediMonk is amazing.:) Very detailed descriptions.....

2. Of your two theories, I like the first one the best. Very circumstantial that those three incidents had jedi involved....but sometimes, that's all it takes to start a war (Or in this case, have ppl turn against you).

Aaaah, very interesting.

Personally, I think Palpatine will give the seperatists inside info on Padmes whereabouts. Padme, under close Jedi bodyguard (not Anakin because the council have banned him from seeing her) is attacked by a huge seperatist droid army, a surprise attack. The small amount of Jedi on guard are killed shortly before Padme. Anakin blames the Jedi for her death which turns him fully to the dark side. After the loss of his mother for which he blames Qui Gon, his journey toward the dark side is complete. He joins Sidious and goes on a hate filled extermination of the rest of the Jedi, most who have been destroyed in the Clone Wars:fett:

but how does the sentiment for the Jedi take such a polar turn so quickly?

what is to say that the sentiment will change? Why does Palpatine have to make the Jedi look like bad guys? To win over the voters? Not likely.

The galaxy was AFRAID of the emperor, not in love with him. Changing their feelings for an ancient order of warriors/guardians because he says so isn't probable.

I could see the Senate not liking the Jedi because they will likely try to disband it or stop supporting it early in EP3. But I can't see the general populace hating them.

Indeed, its good thinking by Jedi_Monk. Very nice post!

I like the first theory best, but both are possible.

We'll have to wait and see in 2005, but i wouldnt be surprised if any of those is correct... at least parts of them will probably be right.

Dictators don't rise to power because they are hated, others will stop them. They are given their powers because they are very persuasive and able to convince everyone that things will be much better when they take complete control. And if people still think of Jedi as the guardians of peace and order in the galaxy and palpatine, who they already hate starts killing them, people will not stand for it. There is still a senate at the time, they'd stimply throw him out of power.

Great theories, Monk. I especially like the second one.:D

I think Palpatine, as powerful as he is, cannot defeat the Jedi alone, so his best weapon is the undermining of their trust. The Republic is failing and the Jedi seem to be almost oblivious to it. I think they will be made the scapegoats for many things that happen.:D
