Sir Brass
This whole parental responsibility thing is just another sign that parents these days are expecting the state to raise their kids while they just provide shelter. My parents are both retired public high school teachers (my mother and I got out of the public school system at the same time in June '02 with me graduating and she retiring, believe me, we're all happy to be completely out) and they've seen so many cases of parents acting in a way that is NOT constructive towards the development of their children. They blame the teachers for their own kids misbehavior, saying that their little Jonny or Susie would never do anything bad, when in reality the little worms are disruptive, sneaky, decietful and jerks on top of that. The parents seem to act as if the state should raise their kids. This video game thing is just another sign of such a trend. As the guy who used to work in electronic retail said, he did what he could, but oftentimes, its proper rating ALONG WITH proper parental supervision that makes the rating system work. If the parent's aren't doing their job, then they should shut up, stop complaining and DO THEIR D@MN JOB, DAGNABBIT! Also, the press IS oversimplifying and blowing the issue out of proportion. Tendency towards anti-feminine content MY ASS! GTA3 was a game targeted to us males ages 17 & up. WE LIKE TO SEE HOOKERS ! Its not a sign of society treating females as objects, its a sign of the media sticking its pesky nose into nonexistant issues and making some BS story out of it. Also, wtf is up with using to extreme examples and using them to reprent games as a whole. Yeah, uh huh, THE F*CK MY JD2 IS AKIN TO BMX XXX! Geez, Lieberman, wtf were YOU smoking, b/c whatever it was, I want some of it! Oy! Why doesn't the media focus on the real issue of the general failing of todays parents to actually act like parents. THAT is a real issue. One of the reasons that parents knew jack about the content of GTA3 is that the didn't even bother to find out! The makers probably said up front what content was in the game, but did many parents even bother to look it up? NO! Why? They didn't feel like it, most likely. The media should take its eyes off of the gaming industry, b/c even though its an easy target, its the WRONG target. The media needs to stop spreading juicy misinformation and tell the grissly truth! Its not about headlines, even though thats what the media wants, its about letting people know the real deal, not some tabloid crap! *snarl* Its irresponsibility on the side of the media and the parents, which is why those two sides fail to find fault, b/c they're both irresponsible and if the media admits that, then they'd find that they had been irresponsible and well, and they'd never want to tarnish their 'professional image' would they? heh, its already BEEN ruined by SH!T like this! Some body give that man a game! Im sure he has never ever touched an electronic game before. Who cares if he uses a box when he was a kid to play with coz it helps stimulate imagination Naw, he won't touch video games . . . they're probably not kosher (no offense to anybody who's jewish, that was a crack at lieberman, not at jewish people in general). Darth Groovy
It's not total BS. I think the lack of quality gaming and the surge of buggy games that wind up on the back shelf in a matter of months have lead to this blatently obvious marketing ploy. A marketing ploy that is hell bent on attracting prepubescent teens and immature male adults. These "adult" themed games merely do nothing but emphasise the fact that most of it's target audience are incapable of getting girlfriends. I'm not saying that these games should come off the shelf, but I would say that there does need to be some sort of regulation here. It's not gonna happen. There is nothing that will keep little Joey from watching the "Girls Gone Crazy" infomercials on T.V. late at night, or keep FOX from being a prime time channel either. I really am not worried about this, and I'm not surprised either. This was inevitable when Tomb Raider first came out. Had it not been an amazingly fun game, it would have sold itself completely on it's anatomically incorrect title character. All this tells me is that the marketing analysists actually went out an observed it's new audience and concluded that they don't have a girlfreind so all they had to do was sell out to hedonism and let the cash registers ring in the new year. Also what these parents fail to realize is that the more they try to regulate what kids see and hear and say, will only make them dive into it ten fold. I went through the same thing when I was a teenager and was taking a fond interest in Gangster Rap. My parents did not regulate me like most of my buddies's parents did. And I was the first person to grow tired of it and give it up all together. The ones who were not allowed to listen to it were the ones that actually went out and got in trouble. I thank my parents for that. I leave you with that advice. The best thing you can do is educate the kids. As far as this sexual marketing video game revolution is concerned, why don't they put more time and effort into making a game that is not only fun but original. As for everyone else, get a life! Sir Brass
I leave you with that advice. The best thing you can do is educate the kids. As far as this sexual marketing video game revolution is concerned, why don't they put more time and effort into making a game that is not only fun but original. As for everyone else, get a life! You put it better than I ever could have. I was never sheltered from violence, but I was taught that it wasn't right, and now, even though I'm somewhat desensitized to violence, I will only resort to it as a last resort, as I know that if I do resort to it IRL, that I will be hurting a real person, not some imaginary person who is actually just zeros and ones going through a processor chip. I totally agree with you about the game quality issue. Thats why I like the old-school games so much, b/c when they were made, they didn't have great graphics, so the game designers had create a game with high quality gameplay for that game to sell. I still think that the best Zelda game ever made was the SNES's Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (it was just rereleased, but for the GBA, and I'm having the time of my life with that game all over again), and some of the best Mario games were the ones created for the NES, GameBoy and SNES. Look back at old school games and see how much they relied on engaging gameplay rather than graphics ploys, to sell the games. Also, look at our own beloved Jedi Knight II, a perfect example of using modern technology to create a truly great game!
