TheJackal
Allright. First I wanna clear up a bit more the "1 boat and 1 helicopter crash" thing. The HMCS Iroquois was sent out into the Gulf to command the naval coalition task force. The SeaKing (the hellicopter) has been a huge debatefor over 5 years in parlementary and with the public. The huge outcry to update them. They are prone to unexpected failure, however they are incredibly usefull. To land and take off on a war ship like Iroquois is extremly difficult. Its probebly more hard to land on this than on an air craft carrier (and look at all the crashes and the danger on landing on an air craft carrier). During a routine exercice while going to meet the naval force the helicopter lost power and crashed onto the deck. however when it fell, it did so sideways. so the blades shredded up the top hull of the boat (just a little, nothing serious). thus the ship has to return to port and for repairs. it is known that Canada has an army which isn't too famous for its size. However little people recognize its well trained army. one of the best in the world. america asked for Canadian snipers to help out with the War on Terrorism in Afghannistan. Canadian Engineers are also very well known. But of course American media doesn't show both sides of the medal so you'll never hear about this. And the reason the government doesnt give away billions of dollars to the Military (like the USA does) is mainly because the public does NOT want this. Just take a look at the newest federal budget and the national polls. Health care, education, taxes, economie, etc all over rate military. it is the least of our worries. Only the Canadian Alliance (Canadian equivilant of the Republicans want an army... you know. biggot homophobic conservative political party). Anyays, as for people making fun of us: like said before. we laugh about it. When the oscars played Blame Canada... we didnt complain and bitch and moan, we laughed about it! And for all the recent "Anti-american. sentiments that the CNN is cramming into the American public's face is again... not shown on both sides of the medal. The world and a general population of Canada oppose to War, corporate politics (oil and taxing soft wood lumber and etc) and allmsot everything that embodies the current American gouvernment. Thus, why there are many Anti-American protests and feelings. So whatever. What angries me the most though is ignorant people. I had a conversation with a couple of people (a few from american, one from egypte and one from france) at work. We oppenly debated this whole sentiment that America has towards Patriotism and you are either with us or against us" moto. Whenever an American critizes the government or a corporation the news either say its normal to get anti war mouvements (like they recently did on the Feburary 15th world wide protest) and say its normal for every war to have a protest. Those who protest are call either attacked to be non-american and unpatriotic. That is where they are ignorant. To be patriotic is to be able to critize and see the mistakes of your country, but still be able to love it and doing your best to make it better. In Canada to critize your government is to be a normal canadian citizen. Why? most Canadians are more open to politics. I think this is plainly because the difference in the political system. In Canada its a Democratic Federal Parlemental government (if you dont know what that is... look it up and gain a brain cell for today). In America its just the plain Democratic Presidential which removes the official opposition and critic of the gouvernment. Look up the facts before you bash other countries. Your ignorance to other cultures/countries makes you irresponsible and you should never be allowed to speak under the name of your country every again. Jokes are okay and acceptable. But there is allways a limit. PS: About that comment on Canada winning against the USA. I hate to burst your bubble, but the War of 1812 was not Canada vs United States. Official it was United Kingdom VS United States, it was just faught on Canadian soil. The Canadian army, the American natives (who hated with a passion the American army) and the British Army fought the Americans back to Washington and burned The White House and then left. That is all.
TheJackal
P.P.S my grammar sucks i know P.P.P.S. About that weed comment. The government is moving into action to maske the marajuana law more slack. Allow small ammounts of pot to be legal. and of course the White House is bitching and will probebly slap on more tarrifs at the border of the so called Free Trade. ckcsaber
I found this on the net today. Apparently this was a commercial and was pretty famous among the Canucks. Hey. I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader. And I don't live in an igloo, or eat blubber, or own a dogsled. And I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada, although I'm certain they're really, really nice. I have a Prime Minister, not a President. I speak English and French, NOT American. and I pronounce it 'ABOUT', NOT 'A BOOT'. I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack. I believe in peace keeping, NOT policing. DIVERSITY, NOT assimilation, AND THAT THE BEAVER IS A TRULY PROUD AND NOBLE ANIMAL. A TOQUE IS A HAT, A CHESTERFIELD IS A COUCH, AND IT IS PRONOUCED 'ZED' NOT 'ZEE', 'ZED'!!! CANADA IS THE SECOND LARGEST LANDMASS! THE FIRST NATION OF HOCKEY! AND THE BEST PART OF NORTH AMERICA! MY NAME IS JOE!! AND I AM CANADIAN!!!!!!!! Thank you. TheJackal
yeah that was quite famous for a while because our nation is still striving to find an idendity from the overwhelming populor media and drone culture that is the United States. there is also a halarious Québec spoof version but only people who know the Canadian political and cultural scene very well... (in other words, Canadians ) can truely understand that one. i found that video/commercial for ya (it just happens to be a BEER commercial) http://home7.swipnet.se/~w-72891/CanadianClub/CCsales/ad.html
Azrael
Originally posted by Katarn07 Canada fought at D-Day you know. It was either Gold, Sword, or Juno... Well, thanks for the help there, Canada. Has anyone actually seen videos of their landing? Them, and the British, pretty much walked off their boats. Yeah, definately, thanks for the help. um... eh? "You're kidding, right? Canada has a warship?" asked U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "Like for war? "Does Canada know?" he added. "They were armed. With guns," said Omari. "Canadians. With guns. And a warship. What is this world coming to?" "They were pretty rude, too," Omari added. "They started asking us all sorts of questions, like 'Where did that oil come from?' But first we wanted to know who gave them the damn warship." That is the funniest sh!t I've ever read!

StormHammer
Every country has it's good sides and bad sides...but the main problem is the individuals who govern them, IMHO. And the minorities who give everyone else a bad name... People should never forget that the standpoint of a government (or any major institution) or an individual, is not entirely respresentative of the people of that country. I was born in the UK. So what? I'm just an inhabitant of this planet like anyone else, and we need to make a better attempt at understanding each other, and put aside all this petty racial/ethnic/religious bickering. Of course, there will always be fanatics, and nutters, in whatever shape, size or colour they appear, and unfortunately we will have to try and deal with them. But the answer isn't always war Azrael...you seem to forget Britain was fighting the war long before America stepped into the fray, so there's a question over who helped who to what. Unfortunately, that fact is often forgotten. That aside...whoever stepped off those boats was fighting for your freedom, and I think they demand a little more respect. BTW...I've just heard America's started bombing other targets in Iraq. Welcome to World War III...
TheJackal
I was looking foward to finish college, get a real job and have a family on my own. but if Bush gets his way I will most likely never see that. At least we'll all go out in one big bang. note: that news you just herd about the USA bombing Iraq... well they have been boming them ever since the end of GulfWar 1. its just nobody knows about it. Mostly the northen zone were its a "no-fly zone". The only difference now is the build up and media attention. its sorta sad and pathetic when you think about it: the war brings money to a lot of industries. CNN's ratings are down? "hey lets show some bombing... but dont worry, no human being is being hurt. its only the outline of evil bulidings and trucks that will hurt you all. Say what? that was an Embassy? woops. i guess our maps were mixed up."

BUSH IS TRYING TO LIBERATE THE IRAQUI PEOPLE FORM THIS AWFUL LEADER, THEY ARE LIVING HORRIBLY BECAUSE OF HIM. BUSH IS TRYING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES BETTER NOT GO IN AND SHOOT EVERY LAST ONE AGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/cools down] Hey, don't burst a blood vessel. People do listen...but sometimes it's the way other people say things that counts. You have to remember a lot of anti-war people feel just as much frustration about their governments. Personally, I'd hope for another solution, and here's why... A lot of people seem to think that this war with Iraq is going to be over in short order, and they can all go home and pat themselves on the back over a job well done. I don't think that will happen at all. The UN is already divided over the issue, other countries are taking a solid (and opposite) stance (including Tukey, which will now not allow ground forces to launch an attack from it's soil), and regardless of whether Saddam Hussein is overthrown, it will do nothing to alleviate tension in the Middle East...it will just make it worse and fuel the fire. Yes, many people in Iraq would be liberated...but many also do not want that regime to end (unfortunately). You have to look at the wider picture, here. Why did Osama Bin Laden wait to attack the twin towers? Maybe it was until Bush was in power. Who is Bush related to? Papa Bush...who wanted to take down Saddam Hussein. Now Bush Jnr wants to do the same thing. What if Bin Laden 'knows his enemy' so-to-speak, and knows what buttons to push. So he keeps on pushing those buttons, bit by bit, until America is commited to a war in the Middle East. This is the same Middle East that already has a problem with America's foreign policies, for whatever reason. So America and Britain invade...and in the aftermath as hatred increases towards the West (as it undoubtedly will), Al Quaeda can recruit as many new terrorists as it pleases, and stoke up even more ill-feeling against the West, and get even more people on their side to continue their campaign of fanaticism and terror. Osama Bin Laden wants a holy war. The US, and other nations, want to give him a war. But it's a war we can't win...because he doesn't have troops on a battlefield you can go and annihilate. We went into Afghanistan to get him...and failed, yet again. While we've sent a mass of troops over to Iraq...guess what...there aren't as many at home. I'd say that's an ideal time for the terrorists to launch another attack, with all those forces commited elsewhere... ...I mean, it seems strange to me that now Britain is going to be holding 'dummy runs' to see how the emergency services would cope in the event of a biological attack, just as we're stepping up military action. They know there are going to be reprisals. I think we're all being played for fools, and buying into a situation that suits the aggressor, not us. Maybe we don't have a choice...maybe it has to be war. But I don't believe this war is going to be as short as the Gulf War, and other countries will likely get involved as the repercussions are going to be felt for a very long time, IMHO. Yes, you're right. Everyone should be entitled to express their opinion...after all, how can you hold a debate if it's all one-sided? I think calling people 'hippie's' because they hold a certain sentiment is a bit unfair. At least here you can voice your own feelings on the issue. Nevertheless, sometimes you have to meet people halfway and compromise - and that means from both sides of an argument.

TheJackal
now your just stereotyping them like most are stereotyping pro-war as gun-totting cowboys. here's a clip from my brother's web site. an excellent writer/student who studies international politics and publics relations, so he has liability (sp?) it's official. bush said it. canada sucks. and if bush says it, then how can it be false? rumsfeld said it. how can it be false? possible embargo on france for it's steadfast and well needed opposition to war..the world's gone mad. i see a horrible future involving an american/british invasion of iraq, the assassination/arest of hussein, and the installment of quasi-democratic government that is bound to fail. once armed forces leave, the notion of democracy in that region falls into shambles along with the legitimacy of the united nations. the united nations falls into disrepair and practically dissolves. the US officially assumes world leadership and terrorism officially begins it's second life, spawning new victims and new enemies. the circle begins again. i don't want to live in this world. canada needs to follow france and germany's example and tell the US no. flat out no. this is not giving legitimacy to the hussein dictatorship, it's simply telling the US that they cannot and will not carry out the self-imposed tag of world police force. either way, we are witnessing the fall of the american empire. not a novel. not a film. real life. it's going to happen, and unless we help them to see the problems as they are, we're all going down with them. if tomorrow comes then we are all doomed with the inevitability of having to face another day, anther day of cold winds cutting your fingers and dreams splicing your time between reality and what can only be the rest. there isn't much to look up to out there, but ignorance can sometimes be bliss. we are just soldiers marching on to a cadence nobody knows. we are numb with fear, fear from realizing that there is no march, there is no cadence, and there is no war. things are not as they appear to be and XERXES, when you say Hussein has weapons of mass destructions and must disarm/be stop. I agree he is a menace to world peace. But the Bush Administrations and many other countries, such as Britain, China, Pakinstan, Russia, India, France, etc, also have a LOT more weapons of mass distructions. I'm totally against all out war and sensless murder. what I am saying is, if they want him to disarm. Then why do they have under thier possession the ability to destroy the world 10times over? Get ride of the Nukes and the Hydrogen bomb. the mass murderers. I totally agree with self defense of course. Like cruise missles/Patriot missiles/battle ships etc. Everything resonable for national defense. But nukes? Free the Iraqis the right way.
