Something to shorten your wait for GB2.

Update:

G3, or Star Wars: Dawning, as it's been re-christened (Star Wars: Utspring in Norwegian), has now got a website.

Currently, it's still in Norse only, and no files have been released yet. However, the site's got three more screenshots and several updates for the Scandinavian speakers.

I'm currently working on two campaigns: One DM campaign where you simply are to build a navy and conquer the 14-planet map, and a tutorial campaign which will guide you trough the building of the first Rebel Alliance base on Yavin 4 and teach you how to play the game.

I expect the full game to be out by the beginning of summer vacation. I'll make an announcement when the English site goes on-line and when the game comes out (in Norse and English).

End of update

G3

Star Wars Strategy/Tactical Board Game

What is G3

G3 started as a game I played with my little brother. At first, it was a game where you and your opponents controlled bases on a planet, and, with the money that would pour in regularly, built ships to destroy each others with. Ship movement was fought on the "main map", while battles were fought on the tactical Battle Map. Base attacks and boarding parties were fought with plastic soldiers.

G3 is a "sequel" to this game with a new resource system (you get resources from mines and credits from taxes), interface (still manual), and tutorials.

What games can I compare G3 to?

A Star Wars version of Master of Orion and Stars! and Warhammer 40 000.

Features

- 100+ vessels, including fighters, mines, gun platforms, transports, freighters, starships, boats, tanks, and submarines. Most are from the SW movies/games, particularly the X-Wing series, while others are brand new.

- 1 main map.

- 14 planetary maps.

- 10+ stations including shipyards, platforms, repair yards, mines, and factories, again mostly from the XWA game.

- 2 Battle systems (1 for space battles and one for infantry battles) include destruction, boarding/capture of ships and stations, debris, and the occasional collision.

- Tutorials. I promise, I'll make the game easy to learn :).

- Extremely customizable, as it's mostly text files.

Basically, you start with a planet with a mine, orbital defense platform, a factory, and some ships, and need to expand and build a fleet and army to defeat your opponent(s).

I've test-played this game with my brother and friends and enjoyed it. Right now, I'm finishing completion of the ruleset, which will be followed by playtesting (and a whole lot of balancing, such as realising the absurdity of a platform having as many Shield and Armor points as a Freighter, and a platform having less shield and armor points of a frigate :D). Which means about a month or so before the first version (in Norwegian) is out, then *some* time to translate 20+ pages of ruleset, tutorials, ship library, and maps to English. Totally, the zipped game folder is 8+ MB :p)(mostly due to 24-Colour bit map illustrations, which I suppose will be converted to JPEG).

There are two kinds of battle: Ship to ship and infantry (which is more like Warhammer). In the atmospheric ship-to-ship battles there will be AT-ATs and Snowspeeders (which will be armed with Tow Cables that severely damage the AT-AT when you fly around it twice).

There will be other interesting features like jamming devices (a-wings) and stealth (one of the boats have this), which throw off homing warheads and the Interdictor from the X-Wing Series, which prevents enemy ships from leaving a battle.

Oh, and I'm currently on the look for someone to "atomate" this game. Ie make it into a video game instead of a board game.

Well, it's a hot-seat game until I get someone to automate it.

I said board-game, I meant board-game. It's as manual as D&D, except from the generator I'll make that tells the player, based on how many mines and colonies he has, how many resources he gets a year.

The "interface" of the game is Word Tables: You've got a table showing your fleets (shield strenght etc.) and a table showing planets and stations. As I said, it's manual.

Again, if I get someone to automate it, you could probably make it into an on-line game. But so far, no such luck.

The game starter pack (as I've decided to call it) will feature:

- Rule book.

- Ship list (90+ ships and stations).

- 1 Main Map (planet-to-planet movement).

- 14 planetary maps.

- List of resources.

- A separate document summarizing the information found in rule book.

- Team tables (for you to store information on fleet/army/worker positions, station names, cargoes, and so on).

- Resource/Credit generator.

- Resource JPG image files (ships etc.)

- A tutorial document, with illustrations, teaching you how to handle ship movement, boarding, battles, etc.

The game is extremely customizable, as it's 99% paperwork and almost no automatization, save for the generator.

Copy/paste URL into Address Bar, open the picture, and hit the Back button. The pic should show in my post.

This shot shows the Main Map in the middle of a game (using Icons from X-Wing Alliance). A Frigate battle group guards a factory, both belonging to the Midgard Paladin Order, and a TIE Defender group armed with missiles moves to sweep the fighter defenses of one of the two Strike Cruisers belonging to the Norse Interstellar Colonies.

Stations and ships in orbit around planets are not shown. Also, to avoid cluttering, only one ship is shown in the same square.

As of now, it's in a beta stage. I'm not going to translate the whole thing yet, but I've released the current build in Norwegian for the lucky ones:

For the rest of you, you'll have to wait for a while. I think I'll be able to get a lot done during the spring break I'm in, though:), the most time-consuming part will be the 14 planetary maps that ships with the main map.
