Heavyarms
I'm doing a big scary research paper on embryonic stem cell research. Please tell me whether you are for and against, and why.
Dagobahn Eagle
What exactly is embryonic stem cell research? Has to do with fetuses and DNA, right?
Heavyarms
couldn't be any further from the truth. Look it up at: http://www.nih.gov .
Hannibal
It's not as if they are testing on humans or even babies. So I say if it can cure disease go for it. But only as long as it doesn't harm human life.
swphreak
Ya, they're cells. They can research/experiment away.
Crazy_dog no.3
Stem cell? Are they the ones that are being experimented on to grow new organs right?
Heavyarms
you are almost right; they aren't using them right now to clone organs, just as a cure to diseases.
Darth Groovy
Heavy Arms, I am your man. I did my final project on this last semester, and got 100% on it. Which was an accomplishment, since the teacher didn't normally give out A's and since I am not really all that interested in Biological Diversity. I too was scared to death of the project, yet became increasingly interested. What I did was open up by dispelling the myths and horrors that are often associated with Stem Cell reasearch, by humorously comparing them to various Sci-Fi films. (Alien Resurection, Attack Of The Clones, and The Sixth Day, to be exact) Then I explain the difference between Reproductive Cloneing and Thereaputic Cloning. I went into great detail explaining the proscess of Theraputic Cloning, which involves cloning the needed stem cells for research. Then I explained the theory's involved with the benefits of stem cell research. I also documented the opposition, (make special note of the Brownback bill). At first I tried to write this paper from a non objective stand point, but as I became more and more involved with it, I found it was impossible to write this paper without figuring out where your thoughts are on the matter. I am for it, if science can benefit from it, and believe it will happen if the government does can learn to see the light of day, and allow experiments to continue, and donate the proper funds to the cause. Here are some links that will help you. www.cs.virginia.edu www.biomedcentral.com http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=0008B8F9-AC62-1C75-9B81809EC588EF21&pageNumber=1&catID=4 Also science teachers love quotes and cited scources from Scientific American. That is also an EXCELLENT source of info.
Heavyarms
it's a social studies about a constitutional issue. The opinion is more important, but thank you darth groovy.
Darth Groovy
It is a touchy subject, and quite appropriet for social studies as well. Know where you stand and have plenty of evidence to support your argument and you will do fine.
darthfergie
I'm for it. I know alot of people who have diabetes, and various other illnesses. The stem cell research has found a cure for diabetes in Canada. The problem is that it requires the use of 12 seperate pancreases, making it very expensive. But they have found that of 42 patients tested that all can now function without insulin shots. Since it is so expensive they are tring to make synthetic versions. The money for this kind of research come directly out of stem cell research. This and verious other fights for cures have been hampered by the dissidents. These stem cells are not babies. In fact if they had not saved them for research purposes they would have just been destroyed anyway. Why waste such valuable things when they can provide so much?
