Burrie
Hey, I was just visiting the official site to reread some of the character's bio(a tradition I like to do every now and then), and noticed a screenshot I hadn't seen before... for some reason, I couldn't reach it with the screenshot-browser, but I could still find them via the links... I believe they're new, I have yet to see them m'self... Anyway, here they are...
Guest Jed
Speculation: Is that some sort of mutated mynock in that last pic? Great pics. Excellent work, Burrie.
leXX
Wow, nice screenies!! Unfortunately the lightsabers still look weird. The glow ends sharply at the tip.
Taos
Good find Burrie! I love those screenies. That third one with the Rancor in the back looks like soemthing straight out of the Matrix [meaning the way the bullet has gone through the air]. Hannibal
I like the one with all the sand people.
Burrie
My favorite would be the first shot. It caught my attention at the official site... I dunno, it's just rather cool : The Human Jedi, the Wookiee Warrior, and the Assassin Droid, kicking some mayor alien behind...

I sure hope the sabers don't look like that when they release the game... that would royally suck. from lightsaber to flatsaber... ok, bad joke. man, i like the color of Bastila's gold saber tho...

It is really wierd how they do that.... I sure do hope they get that fixed. But, those are excellent screens!
Burrie
The more that I'm beginning to see those screenshots, the more that I'm getting convinced that it's indeed an indicator on what kind of saber you have, and what kind of crystals have been placed in the hilt. Apparantly, some crystals will "widen" the beam, giving you a better chance to deflect bolts and the like. It's not something that I'm too big a fan off, although it is a nice feature, giving a bit of customisation for your saber. In the end, I'll prolly view it more as a gameplay mechanic, rather than something that is a part of the story line. I'll keep it that way, unless Jolee Bindo comments on the wideness of the beam, or Malak brags that his red saber does +8 damage.
KaBuTaR
Burrie, i'm slightly confused as to what you mean... are you saying that the flat blade is actually intentional? coz... if you look at a couple of the pics, the blade is normal, though that could simply be the POV. Still though, if some crystals widen the beam, what does that have to do with a flat tip? plus... i don't like the idea that different crystals do different things... it seems to contradict the movies where different crystals simply change the color... takennames
might be just me, but the wookies look kinda undersized. but i dont mind that when i compare it to all the other stuff in the screenshots midjet wookie (weird)
Burrie
are you saying that the flat blade is actually intentional? coz... if you look at a couple of the pics, the blade is normal, though that could simply be the POV. Still though, if some crystals widen the beam, what does that have to do with a flat tip? To be honest, ja, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Each of the crystals that you place in the saber will have a different effect on the blade. From the top o' my head, I believe one slot is reserved for the color, whilst two other slots are reserved for altering the blade. As for the flat tip, no idea. Mayhaps they are early shots, or it is meant to be that way... but I've been somewhat surprised that they've also shown up on the recent screenshots, and I've been considering that it might be intentional. Still, if a developer at the bioware forums proves me wrong, don't quote me on it. So far, my thoughts regarding the blade is all based on mere speculation. plus... i don't like the idea that different crystals do different things... it seems to contradict the movies where different crystals simply change the color... Actually, it would contradict the books/comics/games, but that's besides the point I must say that I wasn't too thrilled with the prospect when I first of heard of it, but now that I think of it, I kinda like the idea. It gives you a feeling as if you are constructing a blade of your own with its own properties that you decide. In some of the books that I've read, they often say that the lightsaber is very important to a Jedi, that there is almost a bond between the saber and its user. Heck, that each saber is almost a unique thing of its own. It simulates this rather nicely. Of course, it does contradict some things out of the established continuity... which is why I personally consider the whole thing to be a gameplay mechanic, and not a storyline mechanic. Take note, there's an important difference between these two. I mean, do you really think that Kyle Katarn slaughtered all those troopers, and cleaned out various bases in Dark Forces without getting a scratch all by himself? Or even better, that Kyle gets killed at various points, and would teleport to a room which he had visited earlier? Of course not, those features are all gameplay-related features, where as the story of Dark Forces(namely the Dark Trooper project) can and has been fully placed into the Star Wars timeline. This is also how I see it with KotOR. The fact that the main PC builds a saber all by himself is a storyline mechanic, whereas the actual statistics of the blade(width, damage, etc) and such is purely gameplay related. My rant might be a bit confusing, but blame late hours for that
KaBuTaR
Hmmm, interesting viewpoint... I don't know if i like it, but we'll see... i just hope they get rid of the flat tip!
Uber_Saber
Great find, Burrie! *Drools* I think you're right about the sabers. But, hey, if James Bond can do it, why can't Kyle? (Clean out an entire base filled with baddies without getting scratched) About the thing in the last screenie, what were those things in JK that looked kinda like that? Wonder if this might be an ancestor.

And I do think that Burrie is right. If you don't like the flat tip or wide beam--just stick different crystals in. (crystals won't be extremely common from what I know though) It sounds like a good system to me. I sure am hoping that Burrie is right and that it isn't just a graphical flaw. KaBuTaR
What exactly would a flat tip do though? It's not like a wide beam or a stronger beam or something which would actually help you out - i.e. wide beam would help you block shots, a stronger beam would maybe cut through stuff more easily, a more focused beam would have more power... exactly what would the point of a flat tip be, other than making it look like a hat? Burrie
You got me there, Kabutar... mayhaps they were still refining the shots. Anyways, I posted these shots at the Bioware official forums, and here's some information that Chris Priestly (Quality Assurance) gave concerning the shots... Curses, Burrie! You found the hidden shots. Now, you must die! Just kidding. Lets see, a little clarification: In Pic one the PC and trooper are fighting a Shyrack not a Mynock (but they might be related). In Pic 3 the effect is not "matrix" but of a sonic blaster. (Looks a little "Neo" though, I do admit). But all the pictures do look cool though, don't they. Note that he's referring to the last pic on this thread concerning the Shyrack, and the third picture near the bottom concerning the sonic blaster. (sounds like a neat weapon, surely something that my soldier would like to have)
Jedi Apprentice
Maybe it is just me.... But in the matrix type picture (3rd pic) is that the guy that used to be on the banner? Or one of his species anyways.....

In the first one he has his knees bent and he's standing next to HK-47 who is tall himself(itself? ) so that also hides his height a little. Frosty_V2.1
In any case looks like it's gonna get some lightsaber surgery soon.. ack, those flat lightsaber tips have been buggin me since they first showed up, thought they would disappear with some of the newer shots but nope, it does look like a glitch tho. In the second shot (with the sand crawler) you can see that Bastila's saber has a bit of a glitch at both tips so..*crosses fingers*
KaBuTaR
On the other hand if you look at the purple sabers they're OK in the first and the last pic. I would hope that it's just the angle from which the screenshots were taken - though the flat tips seem to appear in most screenshots. Which isn't good because then from most angles we're playing at we'd see flat tips. Damn I hope they fix it somehow!!!!

I'm sure Bioware are as big SW fans as us and want the lightsabers to look as real as possible too.
Frosty_V2.1
That's a good point about when the sabers are moving and of course about Bioware. Just looking at the purple sabers i think that actually every saber has had the tip sort of cut off, the purple blades in the pics are sharper and thinner so it's not as noticable but if u look at the glow/halo it ends at the tip. That put's my mind more to rest tho since it seems to be just a general problem
