Question for those knowledgable about computers...

Just a short question... how well do LCD monitors work for gaming? From what I've seen it looks like its alot clear and more detailed image than CRT monitors, with no glare aswell. I was thinking of getting a 17 or 18 inch one if it mattered.

Anyways... I heard that they aren't very good for gaming... though I'd think that they'd be great for the reasons above... Can anyone who owns an LCD monitor and has played games on it please tell me why it doesn't look good, or why it makes the games unplayable, and please don't say "because x chip runs at x speed which makes an error in the z drive causing an unfavorable gaming experiance" :). Instead please say what is the problem in laymens terms :).

Thanks alot!

BTW, does anyone know anything about Satelite connections for online gaming? I heard the data is sent up in too few packets to make it playable for online games as they require constant downloading and uploading for packets, though it does download things like movies, programs, etc fast. Anyone with Satelite connection knowledge want to comment on this?

One thing I have heard about LCD monitros is they have a half life of sorts, so after, hmmm, by my shoddy calculations something like 3-4 years you'd have to replace it, I think I'm right on that?

They also cost a lot more, guess you already knew that :)

As for LCD, it's a mixture of slow refresh, but more to do with the limitations of LCD technology to quickly refresh the different pixels, where there is somewhat of a lag between different parts of the screen.

As for satellite, it's the upload channel that is usually too slow. When they quote the rate, it's always download, you always want to get data quickly, but with such a small backchannel, you send info to others too slowly for it not to lag.

LCD's are getting cheap here in Oz, but not the newer digital ones, which are very expensive. It's a case of the old analogues have their issues, which is where the newer digital LCD screens remove this problem.

I have 2 x 19" LCD screens and I've never had any trouble with them when gaming. I play my games maxed out and at a rez of 1280x1024, and I get no refresh problems or lag. Games look absolutely fine to me, no different to my old CRT.

Lucky you. And sat-net is only good if you're trying to download yourself a backup copy of the internet, since the uploading is done through regular phone lines at dial-up speeds (last time I checked)

It'll be a nice mobile tech though, if it gets to that point.

Thanks for all the answers! Lexx, if you're still out there, can you please tell me what brand your LCD monitors are, and what games you play on them? Thanks!

BTW, to all those who say LCDs aren't good for gaming, have you actually played a game on an LCD monitor, or is that from what you've heard? Just want to make sure so I have a better idea of how good or bad they are.

Also, I haven't heard anything about the new "digital" LCD monitors... Where can I get one, and do they relieve the problems that LCD monitors have?

Anyways, thanks for the replies!

Ok, when I mean Digital LCD monitors, they use the DVI output on the newer cards, and not the older analogue connection that is the usual video output. The problem is that it is digital in the PC, then converted to analogue to send through the cable, then converted back to digital for the LCD screen.

The newer digital LCD screens enable the use of the DVI plugs on newer cards, which means the signal is never turned into analogue at all, and is handed to the screen without being altered twice. Try and make sure your screen has this feature, this is why there are plenty of cheap LCD screens around, trying to get rid of what is out of date technology, without the DVI input connection, and therefore without the ability to accept digital picture signals.

Well those are fast games. I think that LCD's are better than we thought except for leXX.

LCDs are great. The only problem I know of is that they don't work with some 3rd party hardware like the 3d glasses. They'll save your eyes in the long run

Ok... so it looks like I should get an LCD display then?

BTW Lexx, one more question, if you don't mind :): Are those monitors of yours those "digital" ones that someone mentioned early in this thread... Meaning, are they utilizing DVI outlets from your video card?

Anyways, thanks for all the informative replies!
