Star Wars: KotOR (Xbox) Gold!

Recommended Posts

Woohoo!

*Dances around office, uttering giddy but incoherent sounds of joy and getting blank-to-hostile stares in return*

Knights of the Old Republic has been at the top of my most-wanted games list for so long now, and within the next 7-10 days, it will be here! Exciting news, indeed.

Great!

That forum seriously scares me, though. Did you notice that everyone on the first page posted within 3 minutes of the original post (I didn't look at the other pages)? Also, a while back Mixnmojo linked to some thread in one of the Star Wars forums (I can't remember what it was about) and almost everyone who posted on the first page posted within a minute. I believe the first five or so posts were just people saying, "first," trying to be the first to reply. I think one guy just posted commenting on how he finally got on the first page of a thread. Those guys are way worse then I used to be. It is really quite scary.

Yeah, there's a lot of garbage to wade through, but the development team is extremely responsive to people's questions and comments, as long as it's something they know the answer to and can answer without spoilers. I think I posted once, when they were taking questions for a chat, but mostly I just log in so I can use the feature that only shows the developer posts.

I'm surprised it hasn't shown up on the LucasArts main page yet, although I guess it was just announced on the forums a couple of hours ago.

I have this adrenaline rush right now, which is a good thing even though I've got 2 1/2 hours of work left, because I stayed up until 2 a.m. this morning and was about to hit a wall. Talk about good timing!

It's also my DVD player, otherwise my Xbox would have been gathering dust lately, too, Minnie. It seems like the games I've wanted have all been on the horizon. But no more! Well, a little more, but only another week.

I'm also interested to see how Pirates of the Caribbean turns out. It shouldn't be too long before reviews of it start popping up. I probably don't want to over-RPG myself all at once, but it looks good.

And of course, there's Psychonauts, but it's not exactly an imminent release.

But that's okay. I'll have to play KotOR through at least twice to get everything out of it, and that should keep me occupied and happy for quite a while.

I have read to reviews for it so far, one on IGN and the other on Gamesdomain (I just noticed the review on Gamespot, but I haven't read it yet). It doesn't sound as good as I was hoping. I don't think I will be picking it up. I can't wait to see how the real Pirates! will turn out (of course that is a ways away).

As far as other games go, Beyond Good & Evil is looking great, and I will definitely get it. Also, have you checked out Galleon: Islands of Mystery? Here is the site. I think it is looking pretty good, but I am going to wait to read some reviews. There are a few other games that are coming up that I am interested in, but I can't think of them right now.

Hey, don't forget Fable!

Too late! :( I can't believe I totally forgot about Fable! It was one of my top 5 anticipated games for 2003. You know, before it (like Psychonauts) slipped to 2004. But yeah, it's looking incredible. It's almost intimidating in its massiveness. The official site is pretty cool, too.

And thanks, Moos, for pointing out the PotC reviews. I'm a Complete subscriber and I check Gamespot frequently, but I really think their site is not as well organized since they redesigned it. It could be that I'm still just getting used to it. Either way, I missed it when I was there earlier. Anyway, their review seemed to be a qualified recommendation, so I'll probably give it a rental at least, to try and get a feel for it.

But the bugs worry me. I heard similar things about Morrowind; I hope developers don't start getting lazy, figuring they can just release a patch via Live (or other consoles' respective online services). It shouldn't be as hard to work out the kinks in a console game; you've only got one standard to use. Granted, it's a pretty big game. And they probably rushed it out the door to coincide with the movie release. But still...

I'll be surprised if there are any serious bugs in KotOR. Judging by the developer posts on the forums, that's about all they've been doing for the past month or two. Did I mention how much I'm looking forward to having it in my grubby little hands? :)

I used to think so to, but I found a really easy way to check on all of the news there. Just go to their news page. This is todays. I only go there once a day now. I just start typing in the URL and then scroll down and change the date. That way this page is the only one that I have to bother opening and I can get all of the new for the day. It works great.

Oh yeah, Moos! I was following this one for quite a while (like amishler's Fable story ;) ) but then I fell off the wagon watching for it. I think it was announced to be on PC first maybe a couple of years ago, then it switched to being a Gamecube game I think, and now all of a sudden it's coming out on Xbox first?! Now I can see why I lost track of this one-- all this platform hopping is making me woozy!

But I love action/adventures. I sure hope this one is entertaining...

I'm looking forward to Kotor too, I hope the PAL release isn't too far behind NTSC.

I'm steering well clear of Pirates though, Morrowind didn't come close to working decently on the Xbox, and a title being made with a very similar engine, by the same company, holds little promise.

I hope Biowares first console game goes off without a hitch, and more follow. The announced 'extra's on xbox live are a bit of a kick in the teeth though, I've been making excuses not to get live but they are rapidly running out.

I really love the fable pop up book website, but am steering clear of screenshots and hype so I can enjoy it for its self. I can't believe the ammount of fan driven hype arround this game.

chances are ill wait for the pc version, as we've been promised an altered interface and additional content. this looks like it could be the best star wars game on any format so far. bioware have a great track record with rpgs, and with a bit of freedom and a great ip like star wars, they could make something a lil special.

Buzz on KotOR is really good. All the previews I've read have ranged from positive to orgasmic. And in its press release yesterday, LucasArts let slip  that GMR gives it a perfect 10 in their September issue, only the second one they've given (Halo was the other) in their relatively brief existence. Also, rumor has it that GamePro will be giving it a perfect score and calling it the leading candidate for Xbox Game of the Year.

I'm not necessarily saying that people should be swayed by reviews, but I think it bodes well that the gaming press almost universally have nothing but good things to say about it. People may say a game is good or bad for different reasons but if everybody, for whatever reasons, is saying that it's good, to me that's a good sign.

Of course, I've had it on pre-order since February, so my mind's been made up for a while now. :)

I just finished reading it...

Amazing...

Knights of the Old Republic is an outstanding game because it covers every single angle in terms of audience expectations. It's got enough Star Wars to satisfy the fans and enough pure fun to draw in people who normally wouldn't get into role-playing games. You'll see this on several Game of the Year nomination lists if not at the very top soon enough.

Put this up there with Halo, Splinter Cell and any other Xbox game that kept you up way too late or caused you to neglect your loved ones. It grabs you early on by giving your character some cool toys to play with and some familiar Star Wars critters to welcome you back and next thing you know you've got a space ship, a light saber, a wookie and a droid. With Knights of the Old Republic, the galaxy is yours, get out there and get some.

Every time I think I have reached the limit of how much I can want this game...

There are multiple side missions that will help expand your understanding of the story as well. So in Knights you may:
  • collect a few bounties that you've hunted down.
  • reunite a woman and her droid so they can resume their extremely unhealthy relationship.
  • fight alongside wookies in a fight for freedom.
  • try a murder case or two as a Jedi attorney.
  • get thrown in and escape from prison once or twice.
  • smuggle for the Star Wars mafia.

The performers in Knights of the Old Republic, as a group, might have delivered the best voice-acting we've ever heard in a videogame.
*drowns in own drool*

Oh, and those of you who live near a Target store and are interested in KotOR, might want to print this coupon.
