darthfergie Posted July 26, 2003 Share Posted July 26, 2003 For those of you who havn't been following the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong has been engaged in the most difficult Tour of his career. German Jan Ullrich has been on the edge of overthrowing Lance's 4 year rule...at points as close as 18 seconds. Today was the last chance to make up time in the tour. Lance was ahead of Ullrich by 1:05. Considering that Ullrich smashed Lance's last time trail bid by well over a minute, the time was not inconcievable. Today this nail biting drama has come to a virtual end. Lance Armstrong finished 11 seconds ahead of Ullrich today and his victory is virtually assured...the only realistic way that Lance can lose is crashing and having to abandon on the Champs-Elysées. With the closing of tomorrow's stage Lance Armstrong will join the small club of Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as the only riders to win the Tour 5 times. Just to put this in perspective for those of you who havn't a clue about cycling...American Lance Armstrong doing this is like an obscure team from Norway winning the Super Bowl several years straight. Paragon_Leon Posted July 27, 2003 Share Posted July 27, 2003 well, to put the Hamilton story a little bit in perspective....a few days ago he admitted that the bone wasn't broken... so that story was laid to rest. Still a nice feat from him, to ride so well with at least a moderate injury. Armstrong was in control throughout, although cyclers got closer than ever. What was disturbing, was how some reporters simply refused to be enthusiastic about his win, and made no effort to hide the fact that that was because he's American. He is trully an example to anyone who does anything, not just cycling. He has shown the world that anything can be done with patience and effort. He's an amazing person.
