  1. I hope ReMI doesn't go out of its way to include newbies. Curse struck a good balance of introducing everyone, but quickly getting down to the story.
  2. Star Wars follows the classic mythological structure (according to Joseph Campbell) which could be summed up as: Farmboy is forced into the wider world. Meets wizard who teaches him skills. Rescues princess. And pure and true of heart uses the skills the wizard taught him to defeat the bad guy and save the day. "The Force is strong with this one" is just acknowledging this wizard training. Knights of the Old Republic was amazeballs. Loved the music, too.
  3. No it doesn’t. That’s only something established in the sequels. There’s literally nothing special about Luke in the first film outside of a willingness to try. Also Vader scene: Either everyone knows magic exists, and you’d be a moron to think it doesn’t. Or everyone would be shocked by a display of magic in front of them. It really doesn’t make sense that everyone’s so calm about it if it’s so rare. Ummm 🤔 Planet sized super weapon… but not a credible threat? Eh? It’s clear in TFA that they *under estimate* how powerful this faction has become. That’s all. As I say, you seem determined to try and find inconsistencies, while totally forgiving them in the OT.
  4. I did... but only with the help of RiffTrax... and even with them making jokes all the way through it was tough going! So weird that Boba Fett appears in it, though!
  5. He choked a guy from across the room in the middle of a random meeting. Nobody showed the slightest bit of surprise, either. Nobody was like, "holy fucking shit, you have magic powers!?!?". That dude's scepticism was bizarre (although I admit it's mostly due to what we learn in later movies). You missed my point: LUKE felt it for himself. With 10 seconds of tutelage from some crusty dude. So ANYONE could feel it for themselves with 10 seconds of tutelage. And if you can forgive discrepancies between films, and say it doesn't matter that the issues I raised don't make sense because they only exist as a result of later films introducing troubling elements... then what's your issue with the First Order? The FO makes sense in TFA, just like (according to you) The Force makes sense in ANH. And if you're saying that details of The Force only don't make sense as a result of ESB and ROTJ, then how is that different that FO doesn't make as much sense as a result of TLJ? Isn't this all cognitive bias: Cherry picking evidence to support a pre-existing conclusion? All evidence to the contrary is ignored, and any evidence that supports a belief is acknowledged.
  6. Has anyone ever sat through the Holiday Special? Holy cow... that's rough going.
  7. I think you've just defined cognitive bias in a single post! Let me ask you this: Considering the Empire is run by a dark lord of the Sith, leveraging all the dark powers to gain control over the galaxy. And considering his puppet, his second-in-command throughout the entire journey to power, is another lord of the Sith. And considering how easily and willing they are to demonstrate their powers to anyone who even slightly displeases them. And considering the entire Galactic Republic, which was entirely policed by an army Jedi using The Force at every opportunity, is still well within living memory. And considering anyone can make use of these powers and feel something with as little as 10 seconds of tutelage... WHY IS ANYONE SKEPTICAL THAT THE FORCE IS REAL? And how is it that someone high up in the Empire council could question the existence of those powers? Quote: Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. It makes zero sense. (And why, when they created a Star Wars MMORPG, it fell to pieces: There were Jedi everywhere in a matter of minutes.) Well I was busy writing my reply when you wrote that! Bottom line: Star Wars is silly, nonsensical, and great fun.
  8. 👕 I beat #Mojole #169 and all I got was this stupid t-shirt. 6/6 💛🖤🖤🖤🖤 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 🖤🖤💛🖤🖤 🖤💛🖤💛💛 💛💛💛🖤🖤 💚💚💚💚💚 https://funzone.mixnmojo.com/Mojole/
  9. I think that's a pretty high bar, and one that Monkey Island would fail. (What exactly does a governor do on an island inhabited by pirates? Where were all the pirate ships? How did LeChuck really make them too afraid to go sailing? How long had they been landlocked? Most of the inhabitants looked like permanent residents of Melee.) As for the size of the First Order, I felt they weren't all dominating (like the Empire was), but they were growing, gaining support, and becoming powerful. They'd started taking control of systems and were threatening to keep going. A bit like Germany before WWII really kicked off: A nuisance that had become a credible threat that couldn't be ignored. (Of course, I'm ignoring the dirge that Rise introduced.)
  10. We can also discuss what we can discuss. The possibilities are endless!
  11. Expectations can spoil all of those. Parasite was an amazing movie, but everyone I saw it with was disappointed: It has just won the Best Film Oscar a few days before and their expectations were through the roof. I absolutely loved it, though. The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie. There I said it. Nobody believes me, but I think I can construct a sound argument where it just slightly ekes out Empire. (And Rise of the Skywalker is sadly the worst.)
  12. Is there?!? 😳 For me, one of life's great enjoyments is art, shared culture, and entertainment. I guess I take it a lot more seriously than most, but that's fine. I want to experience that best version of something I can, and I'm prepared to put in work in order to appreciate something wonderful. Just how I'm wired, I guess. If adjusting my expectations allows me to have a wonderful experience, I'm more than prepared to make that adjustment.
  13. Fuck me. I 100%'d FFVII Remake and I totally missed that twist 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ The description was nothing to do with "twists". Just being blown away by something.
  14. Thanks for being honest and sharing your memories. It's genuinely interesting to me! I kind if misrepresented it a bit because my experiment (which I've asked others to do before) is really more about expectations. (Spoilers can tie into this by affecting expectations -- so I wasn't being totally disingenuous. Probably the worst thing spoilers can do is ruin great moments -- undercutting emotional impact and surprise. But sometimes it's impossible to spoil things, because of how they're constructed, relying less on surprise and more on drama (great example: The Wire). And honestly, sometimes even I care less about spoilers. It depends how excited I am to watch/play something. If I'm less excited, I don't care if people spoil things.) More important than avoiding spoilers is expectation. That to me, is the thing that matters most (and actually what part two of this poll was supposed to be about -- until I hit the limit on the numbers of questions you can have in one poll!). What's really interesting to me is that almost every example of you being blown away seems to relate to low/no expectations. And every example of you being disappointed seems to correlate with high expectations. (There are exceptions, of course.) Disappointment: Quote: "My pre-knowledge of The Longest Journey was that it was very very highly regarded" Quote: "Star Wars: Rogue One? Most of my friends loved it" Delight: Quote: "Portal would qualify - I didn't know very much about that one going in. The Stanley Parable, similar." Of course, sometimes a stinker is a stinker (I agree with you about Rise of the Skywalker), but sometimes I've found myself enjoying terrible things because I'd heard just how awful they were and my expectations were rock bottom. Generally I feel there's a correlation between high expectations and disappointment. And low expectations and enjoyment. Sometimes things still manage to exceed/match my high expectations (Monkey Island 1, Grim Fandango, Portal 2) but most of the time they only serve to scupper my enjoyment. (If I recommend a film to a friend, I never talk in hyperbole because they're always disappointed if I manage to convince them it's great before they watch it. It's a tricky balance: "You should check it out. It's definitely worth watching." instead of "Holy shit! You need to watch it, it's amazing!") And personally I try to keep my expectations as low as I can... I don't know how successful I'm being with regards to ReMI 😬
  15. Bear in mind that the "spoiler free" thread will have thoughts in it, too
  16. Those people don't exist... (to me) Personally I LOVE Curse. It's probably the one I go back to the most, simply because it's just so damn fun. But I think the original games have such a special place in people's hearts that it's hard to compare. The first two games kind of exist on their own tier, no matter how much you love the others. Well the poll isn't about if you care or not, just what you expect 🤷‍♂️
  17. I wanted to put these questions in the other poll, but it wouldn't let me... so two polls it is! (I won't do it again.)
  18. Oh wow. I actually just realised I want to avoid them... If they're great, I'll be expecting too much. If they're average I'll be heartbroken. Damn... do scores count as spoilers? I guess not 😬 [Starts making plans for a bunker]
  19. Pfft! Maybe! Actually, in all seriousness, do me a favour and complete the exercise I suggested. Sit and think of examples of two moments from your life that match my descriptions, and then share your pre-knowledge of them both. Be honest. Go with the first and most honest examples that come to you, not ones you think you can wangle a counter-argument out of. This isn't an exam, you're only cheating yourself if you're dishonest! I'm genuinely interested to hear other people's examples and experiences. This is most definitely not the takeaway, but I appreciate our differences 👍
  20. Interesting. My favourite show of the past few years has been BETTER CALL SAUL... and one of the main reasons I loved it was the ambiguity of the character's actions. I loved watching it, trying to understand why he was doing something. While there is a certain satisfaction in going back and re-watching what was going on with the knowledge I have now, I also love making my own deductions while watching the first time. It's incredibly satisfying. Do you have two moments? What were you spoiler levels going in? Or maybe our brains are just very different
