Wow, interesting. I grew up in an era where respect for Lucas was all time high. I forget that some people didn't see that era.

I would cynically say that they weren't thinking of the audience when they scrapped the EU. They just wanted a fresh slate in order to bring new fans on. They doubled down by saying everything (from a certain date) is now 100% canon.

Yikes. It's not great when someone wanting money for a book can't make it clear what they're trying to communicate. Sentences like this don't help: How exactly are you going to remedy something that you've basically just said is beyond remedy?

It may have evolved that way, but to begin with Star Wars was just a little space adventure. A stand-alone one, at that. Lucas always maintained that he had a big story planned out and decided to start in the middle, but none of that holds under scrutiny. He simply hit the motherlode and needed to take advantage of it. (Not that I begrudge him that, but it's a bit annoying because a generation of people have grown up thinking that's how the creative process works: It's all perfectly planned from the start.)

I have that book somewhere! It's excellent proof (if any were needed) of how little planning George Lucas actually had for the series. It's all completely contradicted by the prequels, too.

What about locations (ie. screens)? They used to apparently measure game size by locations.

Temple of Doom is still a lot of fun... but it's also surprisingly boring. There's next to no story: Indy goes to a random palace in the absolute middle of nowhere and happens to find bad guys hiding in the basement. It's a bit weird. But the high points are still high: The opening sequence. The mine cart chase. The rope bridge still looks incredibly impressive (and scary). There's just very little in between Raiders is still amazing, and Last Crusade has plenty of fun, wit and action to recommend it. (Spielberg correctly sensed the film was missing an action beat and added the motorcycle chase... if that sequence had been on par with the jeep convoy in Raiders, then I think Last Crusade could have possibly equalled that movie.) But the interplay between Connery and Ford remains priceless.

I can't believe I'll be living in a world with a Ron Gilbert approved continuation of MI2.... NEXT MONDAY! 🤯 I'm going in with measured expectations (and I've stopped reading or watching anything related to the game) but! my world will literally be different after its release: A mystery I've sat with since I was 12 will finally have (if not an outright conclusion) then certainly more pieces to the puzzle to spend the next 20 years mulling over and debating on forums.

Yes, the last letter is 100% a # on wildcard day... however I don't think there's much of a three or four word dictionary, so I don't even know how you're guessing so many words! Also, since you know it's a # you can use that space to guess another letter rather than wasting it on one you know

Why isn't everyone talking about this?! I can't believe you put this together. It's pretty incredible! Special Edition doesn't have ANY bird sound effects in that scene... another hideous oversight!

Star Wars is most often touted as "space opera" as opposed to "sci fi". Or it used to be. The distinction in my mind always seemed to be about how fast and loose it was with detail and science. Gotcha. I guess on the scale of things it seems like a small detail, but I understand you were using it to illustrate your point of things being introduced into the canon.

Everything is ridiculous in Star Wars, though: My phone can talk English, so why can't R2D2? Why did didn't they change Luke's last name if he was supposed to be in hiding from his father... Anakin Skywalker? And why hide him with relatives?? And why does Obi-Wan, who fought endless Sith lords not know that "Darth" is a title, and keep using it as a first name? And why didn't Darth Vader sense that Leia was his daughter while he was torturing her to get the location of the rebel base out of her? Amongst all that, I personally don't find Rey learning Wookieish to be so absurd. The galaxy was an absurd place a long time ago...

I agree, it's huge problem for the movie. I literally said it bugged me in the sentence you were replying to... All of those examples were actual fanboi rantings on the internet (and podcasts) I heard from the time of the movie's release. (You really think I'd just pick something so random as that?) This is so true. It was the most unbelievably hollow moment in the movie, and the point I where I realised it really wasn't working. Cate Blanchet's character was also astonishingly uninteresting.

That's exactly how I felt about the EU. After I learned they'd written stories for every character we see in the Moss Eisley cantina -- even the ones only seen for a few frames -- I knew the EU wasn't for me. I want to be able to imagine that stuff, not have someone fill it in for me. (Same reason I didn't watch Solo, incidentally.)

404 🤷‍♂️ And in Crystal Skull's defence, a lot of the complaints were misunderstandings from the audience: Yes, they did build model homes, along with furniture and appliances and blow them up with atomic bombs (to see how the average American home would withstand a blast). Yes, Capuchin monkeys do sometimes have a similar hairstyle to Mutt's 50s look. (That's why the monkeys help him...) Yes, certain breeds of ants have been known to climb on top of each other to reach things higher than them. And none of their representations are any less realistic than the banquet in Temple of Doom... it's all dialled up to 11. Another thing that bugs people (including me) is how the film LOOKS... Lucas shot on location but then wanted to try a new technique: Augmenting the location with CGI. The result ended up looking weird and fake

Crystal Skull is definitely flawed, but it's problems are mainly to do with a lacklustre villain and muddled plot, rather than the fridge or Shia Labouf. Plus I think most people balked at the adding of aliens... Indy had always been about mysticism to most people. Adding a new supernatural element felt wrong (even though from the beginning Lucas wanted to do a haunted house story with Indy, and probably always had these other elements in mind -- the three previous films used religion for the supernatural elements, and it seemed to fit well). Anyway, I think Temple of Doom is an objectively poor movie that gets forgiven by those who grew up watching it. It sails along on Spielberg's direction and Ford's charisma (plus nostalgia from the audience), and not much else. Whether it's an uneven as Skull, I don't know, but it's close if you ask me.
