Once upon a time in mexico

Watched this film at the weekend with high expectations.

It sucked. Possibly the worst film i have seen this year, and in a year with Matrix Reloaded that is saying something.

I loved El Mariachi, Desperado and From Dusk til Dawn, but this was just a mess.

Coming after the horribly disappointing Spy Kids 3 (1 & 2 rocked!) I have to say that Robert Rodriguez has totally lost it.

OUATIM (like spy kids 3) seemed to be just a collection of unrelated scenes in a random order. No character was onscreen long enough to care about, or hate. It was more like a series of cameos. None of the roles or relationships were explained. People just came in, did their stuff and then left. The only guy i liked was the retired FBI agent who came back to work.

Salma hayek was only in it in a couple of flashback scenes. Antonio banderas wasn't in it much more. Willem Dafoe was completely wasted, having only about 2 scenes without bandages on his head. And as for mickey Rourke, what was the point of his character?

THe big bad genral only turned up in the last few minutes, then was completely unimpressive as a bad guy.

I have read a few reviews saying that Johnny depp saves this film, like he did for pirates of the caribbean. Unfortunately, while he is definately odd, and has the odd funny line he isn't really on screen long enough to save anything. And im still not sure if we are supposed to feel sorry for him with his ridiculous ending, after all he was the bad guy up until that point.

Finally (yay!) the action scenes were just terrible. Badly coreographed, very badly edited. Just a confusing mess of OTT shots of people flying about with no flow or rythmn to them at all. RR needs to watch a few more john woo films.

It came off as a very bad parody of Desperado, and definately doesn't deserve to have the "Once upon a time in... " name.

Another hopeful bites the dust, maybe kill bill will save this year from movie suckiness... sigh. :(

I saw the movie at the weekend, not actually knowing what it would be like or even what the plot was about. You're right, there were a lot of negative points to it, but on the whole I found it kinda fun. The story was hella confusing, but I stopped caring about that aspect 20 minutes into the film. It was very messy, and the characters were definitely not developed enough. Johnny Depp was fantastic though, as with pretty much every other film he's in. I looked forward to the few times he was actually on screen, cos he's just hilariously brilliant, full stop. The action scenes were occassionally rediculously violent, but enjoyable to watch nontheless ^^;

All in all, it was pretty good, considering I wasn't expecting much from it. Was a good laugh actually, not all doom and gloom:)
