WHY must we SUFFER!?!?!

For the art-farts out here...

How come people look at you funny when you say "I'm writing a story?''

I'm serious. People think I'm a tad ^&GYfn when I say "I'm writing a story."

They even get more disturbed when I say "I bought feathers and a mask and a canvas, i am making a 3D painting."

How come artist suffer? is the point i'm getting to.

Why are we considered the scitzos of modern society?

And why, pray tell, are cartoonists the butt of many art jokes?

Post your sufferings and opinions. I am curious.

PS How I disturbed my mom: I have over 100, documented, seperate enties(characters) I tried rattling all 100 of 'em off to her, but started to forget around, oh, 20.

She hasn't asked me "What are you drawing?" since...

Too many people live a life of mediocrity, trapped into doing what society accepts. They're the fools for doing the same mind numbing 9-5 job every day.

I'd say f*ck the armchair critics and do what you want. I've recently gave up the 9-5 grind (and with a wife and kids) to do what I want....and have never been happier!! People can poke fun at me all they want...I dont care!!

PM me if you need any advice or inspiration dude!!!

Well, those particular people probably associate writing with dull essays, dull essays with horrid school, and horrid school with the devil. If I had those misconceptions, I'd look at you funny too!

How come artists suffer?

Artists are wretchedly sensitive people. They have SO many good qualities, but still, I never knew one who wasn't. Living in today's society and watching cable periodically will set an artist up for eternal suffering, as well as talking to their insensitive relatives who think that they should "get a job."

Why are we considered the scitzos of modern society?

I sound like such a horrible cynic when I say this. People who are stupid talk about their opinions all over the place, without thinking about it at all, so that's what's in our ears all the time. There seem to be a lot of unintelligent people out there. :(

And why, pray tell, are cartoonists the butt of many art jokes?

People laugh at cartoons, they'll wind up laughing at the cartoonists, too. No biggie. :)

.....

Like Alien426 said, "The more you suffer, the better your art."

I've loved drawing ever since I was a very tiny child. I always wanted to become an artist. So I draw, and paint and everything . . . I simply love it. I may become skilled at drawing and painting, but until I HAVE suffered, there will probably be nothing in anything that I make. I'm a teenager, and while the teenage years are supposed to be pretty rough, I know that I have seen practically NO suffering. Just like how a writer cannot write what he doesn't know about, I lack the life experience to become an artist.

Luckily, time will remedy that.

Hope this helps, Orca. :)

It helps to know people who are into the same things and understand your feeling about it. I'm writing a story AND I hope to be a manga artist when I grow up...until recently I was pretty quiet about it, but you find when you mention to people "I'm a writer/artist" more people will come out and say that they are too than you'd expect. Not sure if that makes U feel better but It helps me a lot to know there are people who share your thoughts and hobbies.

People probably ridicule Cartoonists because it looks easier than normal art. Less detailed pics, etc...What they forget is that you have to plot a storyline, make it funny and whats more draw HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS OF THE GODDAMN PICTURES one after another. You have to be very patient- it's like being a writer and an artist all in one! :D

Thanks, I like it, too. Nevertheless, I'll change it to my wintery Aylee avatar soon (as soon as it snows for real, I guess).

For Mad Anne Bonnie (nice name!) and others who are interested in comics I have another book recommendation:

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud (he also has a page in CGW magazine, that's where I got to know about him).

The book offers a very insightful look at comics. Even if you were into comics before, you'll have tons more respect for them after reading this book. Scott's analysises (sp?) will give you a whole new perspective and you can learn a lot from it. It'll give you plenty of good arguments in a debate on the subject. Go ahead read the Amazon reviews.

Orca- None of the things you describe sound in the leats bit odd to me, even though I do not frequently do them. But i see nothing odd with feathers and canvas for art. If people give you crap, tell them you just had a work which sold for oodles of money, and never speak to them again. I gurantee they will not think you are strange anymore. (unless, of course, they ask how much, etc. In which case you will need to have a sudden medical emergancy and rush off.)

Artists suffer, it's a way of life. I doesn't have to be, but society says so and everyone knows that what society says goes.

Considering I'm not part of society I really don't give a rats ares what they think about me. I suffer yes, but that doesn't effect neither my art or my writing. At the end of the day, i'm still as optomistic as ever, my art and writing reflects this (I don't think I'd be able to do proper MI fan art if I was a cynical git like some people I know). This comes as a major drawback when it comes to A Level art because we are expected to study such things like abstract expressionism and pop art which doesn't in the slightest speak to me at all emotionally. I like realistic art, landscapes portraying beauty and so on. That's why I took the bold step or writing a 3000 word essay on photorealism for one of my A level projects (which isn't easy when I have to come up with examples of photorealistic work myself). Yes, artists do suffer. But they don't have to. Photorealism was a way of breaking free from the abstract expressionist views of society and just creating works of art which don't need hidden meanings and stuff. Abstract expressionists are seen as the minority of the art world, but are now growing so fast that we are all supposed to belike them.

Don't.

Be Yourself. Remember who you are.

Yes. I, too hate it when people look at me like "that" when I tell them I'm writing something. And if I show my work to them, they say "That's weird". Yeah, weird to you, dumbass. You just don't appriciate my genius.

Whoops. There I go again, talking to myself....

While typing.

You know, I do that a lot.

How come people look at you funny when you say "I'm writing a story?''

Because most people associate stories with English classes. And to be honest, a lot of people don't read anymore. It's sad, but they don't. And it might have something to do with the fact that, whenever somebody asks me what I'm doing when I'm writing, I always say "I'm writing a story." And when they ask what page I'm on...it's usually "oh, page forty-five," or some ridiculously high number (to them) like that.

How come artist suffer?

Because the muse(s) are cruel. Cruel, cruel, cruel. And so are our peers.

Why are we considered the scitzos of modern society?

Well, I don't know about you, but people have a tendency to call me schizo the moment I mention the word "muse." Honestly, people have no idea about Greek mythology, do they? I actually have fun spooking people with that tactic, now. ("My muse says that he finds you unamusing, and furthermore, you fight like a cow. Thank you, please drive through.")

Thank God that the halloween competition deadlines gone back. I was preparing to wait to send it till next year- there was no WAY I would have finished it for Tuesday. I'm doing a cartoon strip you seee, even though I don't do cartoons normally (I mean I tried to do a Zelda one before but I just didn't have the time)- I'm trying to write a story on top of homework, etc, and that includes character art and stuff.:p

I don't think you have to suffer to become an artist. Sure, once you BECOME an artist you're bound to suffer- it comes with the territory, but it's not essential. I think the main quality in an artist (or a writer) is empathy. You need to understand how the characters, or subjects in a painting feel- so that you can make the people who enjoy your work understand. :D (Whew, that was a long and detailed rant for someone who's relatively new to the art/writing scene)

Loadsa Luv Bonnie (Don't lose heart, Orca!)

PS- Glad you like the name, Alien- I like your avatar! :D

Wow, didn't notice that until today, that's good, I'd only done Guybrush and my art consists of Guybrush, lechuck, elaine, murray, timmy the voodoo lady (or possibly stan) and the scumm bar (the bar, not the site although it is a good way of sucking up :D) so it may take a while. Still, it's coming along nicely, but not as nicely as 2nd November nicely.

Good luck Anne, I hope we get to see all of the entires and not just the winner.

Orca, I agree a hundred percent. Too often have I heard the painful response, "What? You mean like, for English or something?"

"No. No just a story."

"O, LOLZ!!!!1 ROFL! omg, lyk, stfu! okey, ttyl, bye lolz!1"

It makes anybody with an IQ above one-ten cringe.

And the worst is when you get the,

"Why are you reading that book?"

"It's a good book"

"Is it for english?"

"No."

Then there's that confused stare that they give. You know, when the gears start to really turn inside they're head.

"Then why--"

"Because I want to."

"But that means....eww, you READ?"

GAH! Illiterate FOOLS! Orca, you hit it on the head. Anyone who shows any creative skill in something aside from sports they are bound to suffer. WHAT'S WITH THIS WORLD??

On further discussion, and more or less spiritual reconstruction of one's being--- hang in there, Orca. I haven't exactly seen any of your drawings or stories, etc. but then again that doesn't matter. Any aspiring artist out there should keep doing what they're doing, no matter how the festering inside your stomache grows at the tone of "Wait, you're writing a story?"

Joshi put it the best; "Be yourself. Remember who you are."

So on that note, I'm out.

BYEZ LOL!!!!11

I will have to read a one of your stories, I love reading, I can finish a big book within 2 weeks, reading is a one of my hobbies, I have people telling me reading books is boring but I love them, they make you think and I can also give myself pictures in my head as I read the book so I have no need to read books with pictures already in them, I have also tried to write stories too but after about 5 pages I run out of ideas, but one day I will write one. I must have a read of one if you would'nt mind, I would also love to see your drawings too, I say bugger to all people who put people down, most people only say nasty things because they are jealous and they wish they had a talent.

you rule orca, keep doing what you are doing and bugger everyone who isnt happy with what you are doing.:D
